This conversation is so much needed. Thank you Karen! I actually left Christianity for various reasons but largely so much has become more evident to me in the Trump and post Trump era that points to religion as a tool used to maintain white supremacy for the same reasons discussed in this conversation. We’re not able to communicate or be seen effectively because we attribute everything to an entity we can’t control. It’s easy to hate a person when you can place your values on an outside source. It’s easy to maintain the status quo when you can think there’s something else working on your behalf but you just can’t see it. It’s not a popular opinion and I will not push on anyone, everyone has their own path. But I feel it functions a barrier for us to really see each other’s humanity and think critically so it effectively maintains the divide and conquer strategy. Much of our divisions in politics and everyday life are biblically based. Separation of church and state is a huge blurred line for many

Seen a cherry-picked clip from this video featured on another channel (Memeology101). The comment section is an social experiment in action; I'm here now for a more comprehensive and less biased perspective of the clip.
After listening to the first six minutes, I understand why many people of Dr. Jaqueline's ethnic background would find this video controversial and upsetting. In essence, she is making the argument that her people should stop purposefully ignoring and/or neglecting the brutal and violent realities of the past that their ancestors created and have since airbrushed clean with near perfection. So much so, we as a species (not just the Western people) have shared amnesia.
Just like how darker skinned people struggle daily with external challenges in a world of inarguable structural racism, white people struggle internally with justifying, excusing, denying, or outright ignoring their ancestors' actions and how those actions presently affect and benefit their lives in the modern era. Most people, like Dr. Jaqueline, may never be able to imagine living on a planet where they'd be unable to travel almost anywhere without the immediate presence of fear simply because of the color of their skin; most white people don't care to imagine what it's like to be followed and harassed, threatened with physical violence or death, be cursed or spit on/at, or having your hair/body touched without permission. Similar to the gender divide that creates tension and argument: most men don't care to think from the perspective of a woman who is more likely to be followed home at night - especially if she is young, harassed if they do not cooperate with the failed romantic advances of a stranger and even threatened with death for being attractive yet unwilling to agree to the demands of a man. And on the other side, most women fail to imagine what it might be like to be a man in this world, too. Most of us live so freely we don't care to think about such things because it doesn't directly affect us and seems like a waste of time for various reasons a psychologist could understand.
The past lives within us, in our blood and in our genes crafted over many generations. For any number of reasons, people do not like to accept that notion of thought or belief. If someone were to reveal the ugly, horrible truth about Christopher Columbus's real life to a white person between the ages of 40 and 100, those listeners might experience mental distress and outrage because it challenges their established beliefs about their pedestaled hero; as a fact, others might just revel in the barbarism Columbus and his cohorts relished in (and wish they were there). Those who would ignore or deny historical yet lesser known facts about a sordid past would only exacerbate their insecurities and any mental deficiencies (they'd likely choose to embrace rather than address). For some who are like Dr. Jaqueline, accepting the reality of the past and how it has affected all of your mind, body and soul, is a daunting task, and it is much easier to continue on with the daily routine whereas people of the minority are forced to live in both the past and the present which they cannot ignore.
This has been my Ted talk, thanks for reading! But seriously, it might be a different world if we could delay staring at our phones and take time for introspection and healing but the world is too fast, and too busy in 2023. It is so much easier to continue supporting the mega corporations comprised of individuals with wealth for several lifetimes whom we should never hope to meet than to take time for self-reflection, what some might call, "spiritualism"...

Correct people if they say a "wrong term" Be against Racism blah, blah, blah, talk 'white fragility" but if you don't have people in your life that don't look like you, you are living just on paper. So many white people talking anti-racism and then the only people in their life, at their events, dinners, etc. everyone is white with boring conversations. If you're white you gotta have personal interactions that make a difference and be able to hang with people who are different. Too much intellectualism and academics and conjecturing. Sitting around just with other white people talking "privilege, fragility, guilt, etc. etc. or whatever and staying in the "white house" goes nowhere, in my opinion)(I know we need the intellectualism and academics but....) Knowing quotes from Audre Lorde, Oprah, etc. isn't enough. I know we need everyone academic intellectuals, theorists, regular people. We can all play a role but I don't think there can be major change without meaningful interactions. Check Dr. Kenneth Hardy "privempathy, the empathy of the privileged.

The answer to the question is absolutely yes but is now time for each one, teach one. It’s easy when you’re younger to “feel” pro black, but then turn assimilationist when you need a job. I had my epiphany close to 40, which I hate, but as long as I have the ability, going to use my OG status to pour into the youth to get that epiphany earlier. We spent all that time walking on eggshells for no benefit to us but to make those who hate us comfortable. Hard pass.

Whiteness and the lack there of is currency depending where you are. It just so happens you get "rewarded" more the closer you are to whiteness or appealing to whiteness in the Americas. Yes, there are exceptions but very few. Usually with strings attached.

Yes it works like a tier. However in my country it's more of a caste system. Where the more European you look or are the more attractive and intelligent you are perceived. The dark skin you are and less European you appear the less attractive you are perceived to be and less intelligent. Being mixed is in some ways seen as exotic and beguiling. The rewards come with the assumptions unfortunately. Like I said there are exceptions to the rule but few and far. Thankfully things are slowly changing.

I have to say that Dr. Battalora touched on something about the lack of empathy. How she references that she felt more empathy for animals then black people. I saw this first hand during the Rodney King beating as a lot of my Caucasian classmates had zero empathy and there were quite few people I worked with who had zero empathy for George Floyd. Blacks are thought of as less than human. Then comes the rationalizations: Chicago, Black on Black crime and so forth as supposed reasoning why Black are not deserving of empathy. Although the per capita incidence of violent crime is higher in the rural South meaning that statistically if you live in the South you have more of a chance being a victim of violent crime then anywhere else in America.

    • @ge2719

probably because he wasa violent criminal. people logically dont fel empathy with someone who commits violent crimes. especially if they also realise the medi and everyone else is lying about them being an innocent saint when they absolutely werent. Did you have any empathy for the man in arizon who shortly before the george flloyd incident, police showed up at his house in the middle of the ngiht, shone a flashlight in his face so he couldnt see anything, and then shot him multiple times because he was holding a gun pointed at the ground because he had no idea who the heck was banging on his door in the middle of the night...? and who it turned out his neighbour phoned in a fake call to the police saying there was a domestic, but they lied.
Not many people even know these cases happen involving white people in order to feel any empathy for them.

I don't know what people are in your social circle but if you or your friends have less empathy for black ppl than for animals then there's somethign wrong with you and ur friends and not white ppl in general. I'm white and I've never felt this way in my life. Seeing ppl get hurt has always made me feel sad and angry no matter the skin color. However if people behave very badly and treat others badly themselves, then that makes me feel less bad about what happens to them as a result, and that likewise has little correlation with skin color.

However I also think he was a disgusting human being (but a human being nonetheless) and it's very strange how he became the poster child of this whole "movement" while similar or arguably less undeserved things happened to ppl who happened to not be black and not a soul went to the streets to protest about it. Thanks, Professor Hunter- you and Dr. Carr always give me so much food for thought. One thing I've been thinking lately is that, if melanemic people like myself want to contribute to progress and liberation, it can't be about our own individual 'white-person's redemption arc from racist-to-woke'. While deconstructing our personal racism and membership in the cult of whiteness is a worthy and necessary effort, I believe it's also the systemic/structural racism baked into our institutions which will require a lot of effort to dismantle. I think there's one community that has figured out a blueprint for a future where everyone can be free. Unfortunately there are powerful people who don't want that, and they'll try to destroy those who try. But the beautiful things about dreams is they can't be destroyed.

There is no "cult of whiteness." That's a myth created by white-hating racists. Also, there is ZERO "systemic/structural racism baked into our institutions." That lie is an excuse created to excuse the poor performance of black people. There's nothing in the world holding black people back other than their own behavior, but rather than deal with that unarguable fact, you pretend that the system is out to get you, when in fact the system has given you benefits based purely on race for the last 60 years at least, racial benefits that no white person gets, yet still you complain and engage in racism against us. Amazing.
