  • Propagating an olive tree from cuttings. Fill an 8-Propagating An Olive Tree From Cuttingsinch nursery pot with a mix of sand and peat. Completely saturate the mix with water but press out excess water. Poke a hole 3 - 4 inches deep in the center.
Cuttings should be from the tip of a healthy olive branch and about 7 - 8 inches long. Choose one with a 1/4-inch diameter. Sever or hammer it to crack it 1/8 inch below a leaf node. Remove all the leaves except a few on top.
Dip the cracked end in 0.2-percent IBA rooting hormone and gently tap to remove the extra. push the cutting into the hole in the moistened sand mixture and press the soil in tight around it. (Be sure to get the proper concentration there are 3 grades. Be sure to follow the instructions there are health and environmental hazards associated with this product.) The powder has been proven to work better than the gel. Be sure to use plastic gloves.
Propagating An Olive Tree From CuttingsPlace the pot on a propagation mat inside a lightly shaded area and set the temperature on the mat to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Mist the foliage twice daily with a spray bottle. Be sure to check the soil, it should be stay moist.
After three months there should be roots on the base of the olive cutting, you can check by gently tugging on the cutting. Continue watering and caring for your new sapling with the heat off, can be placed into a larger pot or planted.

You could try doing as is in video but the middle stage would be just keeping them in water not soil. I have seen other methods but not tried with propagation in water so I presume it could work. The most important thing is that the cuttings don't dry out so it makes sense to keep the ends in water?

      Hello
After placing the cup with olive tree in moist coconut fiber. Because the bottom of the cup has a drainage hole. Therefore, the cuttings inside the cup will absorb moisture from the coir.
So every day I just water the cuttings area, moisten the coir.
Do not open the cup to water the olive tree, doing so easily shake the olive stem. In this case, it is almost impossible for the olive tree to take root.

During the olive tree propagation, I did not open the nylon wrap for watering. Moisture will be provided through drainage holes at the bottom of the cuttings cup (1/2 this cup is placed in moist coir). After the olive developed roots, I transplanted the plants to the pots, then watered the olive plants

@@palomavaldez3988 Hello, Plastic wrap works to keep the olive moist during cuttings. So, only remove the nylon wrap when you see the roots of the olive tree have grown. If you remove the plastic wrap too soon, the young buds of the olive tree may wilt.
If you remove the plastic wrap too soon, the young buds of the olive tree may wilt, as the roots may not yet sprout to get water and nutrients to feed the young shoots.

      Above translates to:
      Van Loan Garden
Welcome. Olive branch cuttings should be planted immediately after cutting to increase the survival rate.
If it is not possible to plant cuttings immediately then the cuttings can be wrapped in damp newspaper. However wrapping like this should limited to 2-4 hours at most before planting.

I would keep them moist. Like wrap the root area in some kind of moist paper towel or cotton wool etc and then place in plastic container until you get home to repot it. Depends what you are doing but if you have to get cuttings yourself take some coconut coir and little pots with you. You could put them all in the one pot until you get home then do it properly and separate etc.

For olive trees, rooting hormone only helps the cuttings to develop stronger roots, even roots. It does not shorten the rooting time!

Young olive trees need to be kept in indirect light. If the area where you grow olive trees has cool temperatures, with an average temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius, you can leave them completely outdoors, just avoid direct sunlight from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The mother plant, very small seen at the beginning of the video, is obtained from an olive stone or seed, it can be seen from the small leaves and the structure, it does not produce fruit and with the cutting you will only get a clone of the plant nothing more. productive, to obtain one that will produce fruit this must be removed from an adult plant already producing, even better if you want to obtain plants already in production in a short time, they can be obtained with the Margotta technique, from a branch of at least 1 year, before cutting it with pruning, a much larger plant than one can be obtained from cuttings and with almost always immediate production.

@@vanloan Hello to you, I intervened with a post of mine, because visually in the video the origins of the plant and the reproduction system are immediately denoted, here in Italy, olive growing has been rooted in history for more than 2500 years, I am surrounded by olive groves and spontaneous seedlings that arise from fruits fallen to the ground not harvested, there are many, many young countries including the USA regarding the cultivation of this plant, (Olea europaea) the Greeks were the first to cultivate it and the first to discover its countless and amazing properties, while the Latins defined it with "olea", this plant has, at least here in Italy, more than 500 cultivated species and each has specific characteristics, among these some produce much more, others are resistant to low temperatures even below zero, others to parasites, in short, there is still more to discover from this Mediterranean plant.
