In this video I talk about the Thai Gold Baht, and how Thailand has a long tradition of gold ownership as a store of value. The unit they use to measure gold is the Baht, which also happens to be the name of their currency. While their currency is not backed by gold, this does illustrate how the ideas of gold and money are inextricably linked in their culture.
I also show a 22k Gold Baht chain that my grandfather picked up in Thailand over 50 years ago.

My colleague here at the hospital is from Indonesia and he buys U.S. & Canadian gold and silver everytime he goes home. He lives like a king on vacation and sets his family up until his next visit. I'm pretty sure he has an estate bought with gold Buffalo's and Maple Leafs. We take this stuff for granted in the US. What's a collectable here is a better life for family members over there. GOLD IS WEALTH!
I wish the date was shown on the appraisal
I’m buying a similar chain tomorrow from a family who’s father wore it with a Buddha amulet thru his tours in Vietnam. I’d never be able to bring myself to sell such a heirloom
I've lived in Thailand for 15years , I also buy Thai gold which is not 22k but 23.2k or 96.5 , also 24k 9999 is available but less common .
Hello mark how are you . I am from India very soon I am coming to Bangkok. I want to purchase gold bars so what will be the making charges the shopkeeper takes from us
@@Bigboss-zc5gm I want the golden man chains in india
Nice that your grandfather bought that and you’re keeping it as an heirloom. Mine was associated with an ex-spouse so I sold it all when gold was high 😂.
haha good move
Oh nice an aviator link Baht chain! I have a 3 baht one exactly like it!
damn, this was very informative!
Thanks for watching!
I love that chain I wish I had that. I really flunked on my first jewelry purchase I wish I knew more and waited longer
Can’t go wrong with mene for your next purchase.
I two baht chains regularly, the first one is a 26.5” 6 baht and the second is a 20” 3 baht. I’m eyeing a 10 baht chain next. pawn shops are the best place to get them or private
Nothing beats buying 24k in Hong Kong and other parts of Asia.
Im going to Bangkok next week, I can get 24K from my supplier.
Having been to Thailand 25+ times I can tell you they are very serious about their gold. It is very much an important status symbol there and their stores are excellent. If you what a gold chain for example, whatever the style, it sold only as the spot weight plus 5%. Credit cards aren't big there and I've seen ladies making large purchases with literally a shoe box full of 1000 Baht notes. (1000 Baht = about $30USD)
awesome, thanks for the info!
@@SmartSilverStacker What about 18kt? What are your thought on that?
Mmm yes. Very fine video!
You can also take it across international borders
Great video very informative thank you for sharing!
Enjoyed this video. Lovely chain.
But i have to disagree on one thing. Me personally, i do not consider 14k low grade gold as you have stated 2 times in the video. 10k an under is low grade. 14k is good grade. 18k an up obviously is high grade gold. Here in the states the standard an norm should be 18k.....anyways good to see your not selling off your familys heirlooms for the dirty dollar.
10K is the bare minimum in the US, anything less isn't considered gold, although there is melt value for 9k & less. When comparing Thai jewelry with US 14k jewelry, yes 14k is low grade. The standard Thai baht jewelry sold in Thailand is 965, slightly over 23k. Yes they do sell lower grades & 999 is much more available than in the past. Once you start buying 965 you don't really want to go back to 14k, or even 18k.
Good Points. I'm told the 24K is the way to go. and 22K is next but nothing under 22K
sounds about right to me. If I were to buy gold jewelry right now I'd probably get 24k from Mene, but I'm glad grandad picked this up when he did!
@@SmartSilverStacker It's cool that you still have it. Keep it.
@@SmartSilverStacker Why should you not buy less than 22k? Does that go for all Jewelery that you buy?
@@SmartSilverStacker I'd shy away from Menē. I've bought a Platinum chain & pendant set as well as a Gold chain & pendant set from them. I've gotten three 24k gold chains/pendants from 9999 Gold Jewelry in St. Paul MN and not only is their premium lower than Menē, the chains and craftsmanship are much better IMO.
@@CashAndCoinsYT what about 21k?
Love it great ideal ..... but they should mark it.
Can you tell me where is 22k gold shop
Thailand
Are baht box necklaces solid or hollow?
they can be both depending on the weight of the chain desired.
Thai Baht gold is 23.15k or 96.5% pure. 22k gold would likely be from India, or perhaps from an an Indian jeweler in Thailand, but it is not baht gold!
My father in law has a high purity chain marked "22C" that's right around 15 grams and it came from India when his father in law worked there decades ago. 9999 Gold Jewelry is a local store to me and they are Asian but use 24K gold for their jewelry.
Yes most of Thai gold is 23k not 22k😅
That was some very good information.
Gold bullion is definitely easier than silver bullion there’s a time for everything right now the time is for silver bullion but I have a Lotta 22K 24K jewelry for the simple fact I can put it on and leave the country with it
yeah that really is the primary advantage of high purity gold jewelry. wealth you can wear!
