I had one of those back in 1989. Mine was 4,5HP. Ran for 5 hours on the built in tank in the ocean. Very nice, always started on the second pull. Only needed choke in -20 degrees celcius. Love that boat for $390.... :)
I really appreciate the way that you deliver your commentary. It is almost as if I am in the shop with you and you are talking to me. Whenever you make a mistake or have an accident you just laugh it off and continue on - great way to make it through the day and have a long life. Loved seeing your dog.
I think the gas cap has a breather that needs to be unscrewed to prevent a vacuum in the tank. It’s screwed back in so the tank doesn’t leak when it’s moved.
they did this on my 88 fourtrax. says on/off but theres a petcock below the tank and it doesnt lock the gas cap so my conclusion was leak prevention if the float needle fails to stop the flow. my honda harmony 215 has a throttle actuated fuel shut off valve.
Wow, ‘88 FourTrax! I got an ‘86 250cc in ‘89 as an 11yr old & it changed my life. I’d pull my Coleman Scanoe (w Minn-Kota) on a trailer (with the 250) with my buddy on the back to any pond/lake/river that we could get to, to fish and explore. I felt that I had life figured out!...except for the ON/OFF Selector of the Fuel Cap. 30 years later I realize what it was meant for from a fellow Mustie1 fan. The 250 is still at my folk’s farm under a shed roof of their main stable. I want to restore it. I need to restore it. I HAVE to restore it, as I still have the Scanoe & Trailer at my home, so: HONDAs make me happy. It’s no surprise that Mustie’s “stolen” outboard fires right up & pumped water above a spinning prop.
Uh, make it more of a challenge will ya MUSTIE????????????????????? Have a little drama or at least have the outboard fall off the stand and go zipping around the garage like in the 'toons.........................

Great video as always. Quick tip you can tape or tie with some string, some heavy plastic, like a piece of old tarp, down the side of the shaft where the water outlet/exhaust is, then just leave it drape down over the water outlet into the bucket, it stops the water from going everywhere and recycles it back into the one bucket. You can get away with using duck tape to make a little redirect for the water/exhaust outlet.
The white deposits on the lower gearbox says it was salt water used. On all older outboards I recommend at least a look at the water pump impeller. It may be pumping now but it may be minutes from coming apart. New gear oil is cheap insurance.
Hey Mustie, I have a band instrument repair shop in my garage and, while my "wrenching" is a bit different than yours, the principles are largely the same. Diagnosis and problem solving. You have inspired me to take more care of my tools and really get my shop into shape. I thought that we also share the hoarder mentality that pays off in the end. Some of the various small engine repair manuals have diagrams showing how to tie a knot for the starter handles. The way you did it results in too small a knot that will eventually just pull through the handle. Wish I could describe it but, a diagram is worth a thousand words. Love your videos. Please keep making them.
Wow - 30 bucks, what a score. I bet if they used it as a dingy motor on a sail boat its one that can lay on its side (yep, confirmed by the extensions on the plastic opposite the handle). We had to have that so it could lay in the lazerette inside the boat. This makes it desirable to sailing folks. Its hard to find these anymore in a 4 stroke. I paid 450 for one that needed a carb rebuild.
Hi chap. great video, and nice find. These are a lovely little motor. I noticed you did not change the impeller. As the motor has sat for a long time, I would stay that will be now hard, brittle and due to fail. Also when you are running the motor in a bucket I like to put a squirt of dashwash in the water as that helps break down any salt deposits built up within the cooling system. Take care, I hope that helps, Duncan

The red Karmann Ghia brought back some great memories for me. It was my first car. Bought it in N.J. and drove it to Florida. When I went to install a new radio Inside the fuse box, all I could find was 6 volts. 1966 was the last year they did that. So, the radio ran off of a little 12 volt Ni-Cad battery. It worked real well! Using 6 volts in Florida was no big deal, because it never gets below 40 degrees. I sure loved that car.
I had a 1974 Celica ST! I loved that car! I got it used when it was nearly 20 years old. Converted it from a 4 speed to a 5 speed. It was very nice to drive and very attractive styling. It's the one car from my 'youth' that I'd love to have again.
You lucky dog, that's when they had the better carbs, and I've been looking for one of those. Have come across ones slightly larger around here..with people who want like $1200 for them, but I need a small one like that for my small duck boat, had been running it w/a 1958 Chrysler mtr.,which runs like a top, but a friend knocked a pole digger onto it and it broke the fuel cap, have yet to find a replacement.Would have replaced that fuel line though ;) Lil says she takes a bath at the cabin every yr...and that's good enough! Re: end knots... figure 8 knots work better than just an overhand. I have A) had overhand knots come out on their own. B) had overhand knots jam and be hard to remove. A figure 8 doesn't seem to self loosen, yet is still undoable.
over 40 years ago my tech. teacher in high school said The real difference, is the fact that "motors" run on electricity, while "engines" run on combustion. haha
@A Dreamer nailed it. Any machine designed for the purpose of converting energy into useful mechanical energy is a motor, regardless if the inputted energy is chemical, electrical, or what have you. However, only motors that run off of combustion (external or internal) are engines.

" I was kinda hoping for a better fight" "the next motor ... Laughs in ceased carb parts"
Yes Honda do make good units, I believe the Honda Civic/Accord cars are Good, ( unsure about their others ) I have a 2020 Honda motorbike, they Do Build Good Quality!! This one sounded sweet running and will serve a small boat for many more years!!
Two things 1) i'm ashamed to throw anything out now 2) watching zillow in case any of your neighbors move out, i'm in....love your videos, keep them coming
Looks like my 2hp , air cooled.....
I sure like the prices at your areas yard sales, $30 for a running Honda kicker motor!!!
I know, he got a killer deal. I just ran across one of these at a yard sale here, they wanted $250 for it!
@@thomashowlett8295 But you know, maybe he really did pay $250 but he tells us $30 just to make us jealous.
JimTheSoundman: Watch some of his other vid's...He lives around some absolute morons! That's a $300 motor; $400.00 in the middle of summer, and your boat is stuck on the lake...
I was watching blancpain gt but this is much better !!! for a sunday morning
Sorry Musti, but no way this is better than a GT race!
My missus: "Honey, the new GoT is starting!"
Me: "Tape it! Mustie's just posted a new video!"
Go Mustie! All the way down here in Oz, I have enjoyed every single one of your videos and am an ardent fan! Love your work, and your style.
GoT isn't even worth taping.
@FRIENDLY JAPANESE BUSINESSMAN Oztralia. Don't mind it its full of snakes and spiders and coal minors named Sue.
@FRIENDLY JAPANESE BUSINESSMAN oz means Australia
@FRIENDLY JAPANESE BUSINESSMAN Yes...slang or custom and usage. Over time AW-strailia became OZZ-stralia & the wonderful people there are "OZ-zies". Or it could be they are huge Ozzy Osbourne fans!!
Greetings from WA I am like you a true Mustie1 devotee, I wonder if he reads this stuff and realizes his popularity
I too have watched every one, and dont bother with others. just wait for his next vid, all the best.
for somebody as old as Mustie 1 is (55), he stills gets her done...the dog wash was neat gots to show some love to your #1 buddy, thanks for making my Sunday morning a Mustie 1ride along...i know the big show is comin, yes
I like being one of mustie1's little helpers.... even though, I can't hold a flashlight, or a wrench... or tell him when the oil meets the line. Thanks, buddy.
Great score. Start off Duck Hunting season here in NZ. 11.30pm Sun here.
Man I want to go there. How are you guys holding up with all the anti-gun crap shoved down your throat? Were the hunters really supporting the confiscation? They will be coming for your shotties next.
@@ocavant Shit is hitting the fan. A crim walked into a police station up nth in Parmerston Nth and walked out with 14 or 15 handed in firearms lol. Plus taxpayers are going to be coughing up with buy back for years & years.. Millions & Millions. Alot of hunters are not happy at all but if your a proper hunter/ stalker you only need one shot. Pest cullers should be able to have large mags. Only rim fire .22 are allowed 10 shot mags. 5 shot mag in 12 gauge etc. Bed here if you need one...
Croissant ,coffee and a sunday morning Mustie video, I'm good.
Only if it's a totally fresh croissant though!!! Same here... great channel!
Honda has never let me down, pure quality stuff
Damn great find. You always come across the great deals and great free items. Keep up the great work
I love your attitude and sense of humor. Keep doing what you're doing. We appreciate you!
Water sits below the oil. But often on outboard lower ends it emulsifies into the oil.
Always being a Yamaha guy myself, you've given me a new respect for Honda engines. Those suckers last. Thanks Mustie
Definitely a split pin over here in the UK lol
It's called a shear pin here. If the prop gets caught on something at shears that pin off and won't break your shaft. Yeah I know that's what she said
@@williamlee1429 funny how we relate to things differently lol I see it all as a learning experience
Doesn't the split pin hold the prop on & the shear pin is inside the prop to drive it?
Oil floats on top of water, so does gasoline.
If you get water or engine coolant in the oil, it goes straight to the bottom of the sump.
What's a sump?
@@ooftasticgacha6937 The oil pan or whatever holds the oil on the bottom of the engine, a sump.
@@GGigabiteM everybody with a basement knows what a sump pump is. Or better learn quickly.
Hahaha when your phone rang i thought it was mine lol. Thanks for the vids!
Nice video again, fun and educating, thanks a lot Mustie👍
Clicked for a outboard, Liked for the Doggo.
Those are good little boat motors. Looks around 5hp maybe?
Thanks for the informative video.reminds me of the Merc 9.9 I worked on .had a broken swivel bracket.thanks again.
Would have bought that boat, even if it's the last thing I need to add another around here!
Everytime Mustie has problems like that oil fill I chastise myself for being a lousy mechanics helper...
Dude??? I've always watched your videos and DON'T understand ho win the hell you get all these great finds! You must be lucky! lol Thanks for taking the time to share and educate!
Re: end knots... figure 8 knots work better than just an overhand. I have A) had overhand knots come out on their own. B) had overhand knots jam and be hard to remove. A figure 8 doesn't seem to self loosen, yet is still undoable.
over 40 years ago my tech. teacher in high school said The real difference, is the fact that "motors" run on electricity, while "engines" run on combustion. haha
In that case, why do they call the magazine and TV show MOTOR WEEK and it's about cars with gas engines. Lol
But does not apply to outboard motors !
Technically correct, but the terms are now used interchangeably for gas engines so... language evolves.
Motor is derived from the word motive as in motive force. Animals were motors for a long time.
@A Dreamer nailed it.
Any machine designed for the purpose of converting energy into useful mechanical energy is a motor, regardless if the inputted energy is chemical, electrical, or what have you. However, only motors that run off of combustion (external or internal) are engines.
Mustie, do you ever think we could get a tour of your Empire?
Make it sound worse than it probably is so that he will want to show us
@@inthewoods5471 Just what I was thinking. We've already been there. :)
I imagine there's stuff for sale that he's applied his magic to. I bet most of it goes to the locals though which is as it should be, and the way most anyone else in his position would do.
I think he has sort of given them, but you have to look fast because he's usually test driving something he just repaired. Lol
@@joewoodchuck3824 He puts it up for sale at the end of his driveway. The street in front of his house has such high traffic I imagine he has no problem selling his items.
Mustie1, the best tool for picking out tight knots is a whine bottle cork screw. Work it into the knot where the rope crosses itself. This works on nylon straps too. Hope this helps some people
I had no idea I had such a cool ringtone lol. Great deal on the outboard ! I think it's time to drop off a real challenge for you .....
Did you remember to tighten the spark plug
Yay! Split pin! The old-world comment section education is paying off!
We'll have you mixing and matching inches, millimetres, AF, Whitworth and BSF before you know it, and nothing will quite fit right ever again! ;-)
... and the boat was sensible Right Hand Drive too ...
There are two kinds of countries in the world, Steve: those that use the metric system, and those that have put men on the moon. :)
@@dantheman7793 but Wernher von Braun was German :-p
All ribbing aside, I'm touched how found you are of the imperial system you took with you from Britain ;-)
Still amazed on your knowledge about any engine, Put this one on your boat and have some fun.
I always remembered being taught, electric motor, gas engine. That is goin back 30yrs maybe .
Yet I park my motorcar next to my motorcycle, when I'm not towing my motorboat.
I enjoyed the chuckle when Mustie went back and forth in the video; he's right that this machine is both. Engine plus gearbox, prop, and water pump becomes outboard boat motor.
