I attended the Paul Clark 50th anniversary show in Kansas City. He had Phil there. They ended the show with this song, and they rocked it for about eight minutes.
This song has meant so much to me over the years. In the early 80's, like 82, my older brother (he was 20 I was 10) came to SC from CA as we had moved early that summer. He had been at college and lived on campus. When cleaning the shared apartment he lived in his roommate found the vinyl record "How the west was one". Since neither knew where it came from, they made a copy of it, and one kept the record, and the other the copy. When he came to SC I heard it for the first time. Your story "my life" floored me. My mother had (still does) bi-polar disorder/schizophrenia. She was the most wonderful mom, but would flip and become a monster. It was probably one of the most unsettling experiences of my life. To hear you share that you had lost your mother (lost the relationship this side of heaven) really made me feel not alone. Your story of redemption was a seed that God planted in my soul. 9 years later I met Christ in my car on the way to work. It was an awesome experience! It took a little faith at first, but when he showed up, his presence made needing faith quite unnecessary. My brother was only with us in SC for the summer. He went back to CA to finish school, he took his music with him. I probably heard it 4 or 5 times that summer, but it was enough to last a life time. That's what kind of an impact it had on me. As an adult of 48 yrs old, and musician I have realized that to each person there is given a field of harvest. Some have a large field, some have a small filed. The size of the field is unimportant, it's the harvest in the field that matters. Thank you for sharing your music. I was harvested in part by your testimony through word and music. 9 years after hearing your songs I was saved. I found a cassette version of that album (even though at the time it was out of print). What a blessing. I feasted on the recording for nearly a decade. One of the things I enjoyed most was how original the music was. I hope you are doing well and hope this encourages you to keep the faith, to keep going. I was just thinking about John the Baptist and how he doubted after he was thrown in prison. Sometimes after we have served, testing times come. Our faith can be shaken because circumstances change. I have faced it a few times. If you ever face it, go back and listen to some of those recordings. Go back and read some of those first scriptures God spoke to you through. It's amazing what he can do with a memory. Love ya Brother Phil!
A friend posted a link to this song on her blog. I was looking in the comments to see who else thought that this song sounded like the Beatles (though personally I am unable to specify Paul McCartney). The music - the same. The words- completely different.
Phil definitely has some similarities to Paul! You can tell that he’s a big influence on Phil. The most blatant example would be “Love Divine” from the Crimson and Blue album which is basically a rewrite of “All My Loving”. I love that aspect of Phil’s singing and writing!
Like a precious jewel.
That "Brother Tom without a doubt." line was kinda fire!
One of my favorite songs of the Phil anthology.
Pietermartizburg KZN South Africa 🌍
