- Visit the site of one of the least known Royal Palaces in England - "Hamstead Marshall's - The Palace of The Winter Queen".
Hidden away on a private estate very near the town of Newbury, England is the site of this abandoned mansion ruins and secret place, that very few people know of its existence. The story starts with the first mention in the Doomsday Book in 1086 and includes US Forces (1st Parachute Infantry Regiment) on D-Day in World War 2, 1944
The main character of the story is Elizabeth Stuart - Queen of Bohemia, (daughter of British King James I ) who was also known as "The Winter Queen",
Although sounding like a character from "Game of Thrones" she was a very real member of the British Royal Family and a very significant historical figure.
In 1605 aged 9 she was an unwitting member of The Gunpowder Plot by Catholic Conspirators (including Guy Fawkes) to blow up the British Parliament, kill her Protestant father King James I and install her as a Catholic 'puppet Queen'. In her late teens she married into European Protestant royalty. Marrying Frederick V - Elector of The Palatinate, and becoming Queen of Bohemia.
But after just one Winter on the throne she was forced into exile from Bohemia by war. Elizabeth was widowed young, and because of that, unable to legally remarry, it is alleged she then had a 25 year long secret relationship with English Nobleman William Craven -1st Earl Craven
So besotted was William Craven with Elizabeth Stuart, that on her return to England from exile in 1660; as a result of the 'Restoration of the British Monarchy'; Craven had top London architect and Dutch courtier Balthazar
Gerbier construct her a Royal Palace and Grounds fit for a Queen at Hamstead Marshall, a Parish near Newbury, Berkshire, England.
The history of the Palace is filled with tragedy and disaster; which included the Queen's death in 1662 .
But the palace was built in full by 1694, and its ruins can be found today near Newbury if you know where to look.....

William Craven, the first Earl of craven did indeed have children of his own. As I am his direct descendant. He is my 10th great grandfather as proven through dna and ancestry. The Craven line is from before the 1400’s all the way up to my maternal grandmother.
I think you have an amazing history to your family.
Just finished watching this with my mother. We love and appreciate this and always wanted to see more historical stories about our family ❤
This was fabulous. Enjoyed every moment. Thank you.

Well done. Fascinating. 👍🏻🏴
fantastic work and effort, thank you, I was totally blown away at the end when i saw that the memorial was placed in the very spot my father was camped prior to D-day as awell as market garden as part of the 501st PIR, 101st. Thank you so much for this fine video and endsight to a previously unknown aspect of my fathers service during WWII.
I absolutely loved this! Well done and thankyou 🙏🤗!👏👏👏
Excellent video!
I'm a sucker for history, so keep 'em coming! 👍🏻👌🏼👏🏻🍻
Great video! I love history like this. How many times have society's rules tried to keep a man and woman apart? They usually don't succeed. Mother Nature goes by different rules and she is very insistent.
I wonder what amazing things were inside that palace when it burned down!?😭
You deserve more views. Very interesting, very well made video.
What a vulgar monstrosity that modern house on the site looks. I agree with your sentiments on it. Very moving section at the end about the war memorials.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing!
Great stuff Andy (as always)!
Very interesting video, I love stuff like this. I would visit if I lived in the region.
great video! loved watching!
Thanks so much!!
I doubt there is a hard and fast rule about a stately home can only be called a palace if it becomes the residence of royalty - what about Blenheim Palace, the residence of the Dukes of Marlborough?
Is craven cottage anything to do with William craven? Surely has to be?
