And "empires fall" could mean (both) America rising as an empire and Great Briton falling as the towering nation.
Im so glad that Lin decided to add this character into the show. The rest of it can be heavy and very fast, King George allows a bit of a reprieve and different style to break things up.
I’m British and to be honest the ‘awesome, wow’ is on point in terms of British sarcasm and deadpan delivery. It is also probably how I would sound attempting an American accent! My husband and I cracked up at that delivery from Jonathan. It’s perfect.
I mentioned this on You’ll Be Back because I’m a big English history buff but they actually have clothing in the UK Royal Archives that belonged to King George III that still has drool stains on it hundreds of years later. So basically they couldn’t have picked any better actor to illustrate that historical aspect 😆

Perfect example of how tech, the actor and director can work together to create such a great moment. If Groff hadnt created such a solid character, the light change wouldnt have worked as well. The director was able to see how to create a good moment with something so little. And tech needs no introduction. They are amazing. Period.

I only discovered Hamilton with the Disney+ release last year and, I have to admit, I have become obsessed with it - almost to the point where my partner now rolls his eyes when he hears those opening orchestral stabs. Jonathan Groff is just outstanding in this role; it really needed both the comedic timing and capability to immediately engage the audience for this role and that is something that Groff can do effortlessly. Marc, thanks for constantly reviewing those musicals and performances that seem to always resonate with me.

I'm obsessed to the bone with all of it and I want to share my obsession with my mom that it's a musical lover like me, but I can't because here in Argentina the movie doesn't have subtitles in Spanish and my mum doesn't understand it so it sucks by the movie rocks

I see this song as being about power. A King who always gets his own way suddenly not getting what he wants. This is why in the final song, he is overjoyed & starts laughing when he discovers that Washington is stepping down.
Personally I think the way he played the "awesome, wow" line is more effective for me with the muted, one note version of it. It sounds much more like he's playing down the significance of them being free and on top of that, it sounds like he's mimicking an American accent as an Englishman which is what had me laughing. Groff delivers all the king's numbers to where you laugh but also feel his disconntent/hatred for america and his disbelief that they won. It is in every way he sings every word. Especially in his later years he suffered from delusions, paranoia and hallucinations as well as memory problems and acute anxiety, and I’m sure the actor did his research. The “awesome, wow” bit is also said in an American accent to imitate and mock his former subjects I feel as we wouldn’t say it that way in England..
So the fact he seems to not have a clear path and depth/strength of character to develop and/or fall back on while reflecting on his actions and reality around him is perfectly in line with what King George III was all about. One day he’d be reasonably sane and make a good decision while the next he was known to throw things around the room and scream at all his advisors to leave him alone like a child. Much of which he wouldn’t even remember as time moved on..

Another thing I love SO MUCH is his posh accent! I spent a semester in England, studying abroad, and when the English students referred to a posh accent, I honestly didn’t know what they meant…until I watched The Crown. Now it’s impossible to miss. I love that you can hear it so much in this performance. It really separates him as an elite from the lower classes-aka the American rebels. I’ve watched King George performances by a few other actors, and the posh accent is missing. But this is spot on.
I like it! You have mentioned the proclivity of the character to break the fourth wall, and go all valley girl, so the character's "awesome, wow", not being bound by time, can directed at us today as reflecting this nation's bad choices of late, as our own empire starts to crumble. As such, I really like his choice.

I interpret or feel in the boot stamp light change as a way to communicate that the King is still important. A very intelligent way of saying “Yes, I lost, but Im still dangerous and extremely powerfull”
I think the footstomp light switch is more that things have fallen apart so much that his followers can't tell where he's going (or switched their focus to something other than him) and he has to (regrettably) spell his moves out clearly and as a consequence lose some of his affect/power. It's genius!!
I'd just like to point out that the blue lighting could also be interpreted as king George's supposed illness porphyria which in rare cases as supposed with king George it turns the urine blue that was also what they thought turned him mad at the time I may be incorrect but it's a theory !!!
People in power tend to let questions hang. I interpret the delay between "... Query for you" and "What comes next?" As someone so accustomed to everyone waiting for them to finish talking it is natural to pause and intentionally drive up the tension for the real question, "What comes next?"
You also have to think about "the madness of King George," and people who are interested in history will appreciate the way he plays it, and not only think of a "stable" stage character.
I was in elementary school when Hamilton released. 2014-15 was a great year. My favorite thing about the musical that I think so many forget is the HAM4HAM lottery they held outside the theatre. You paid $10 (a Hamilton) for a chance at a front row seat to the show with (I think) only 10 tickets drawn each show/night. This is significant since a standard ticket ranged anywhere from $250-500! I participated twice but didn’t win. What’s even more unfortunate is the fact that I missed the period when they allowed American history students to watch the live broadway musical for free!
King's control over the show- I love in the first song he gives direction to the Orchestra to end the song and that connects to this song and the blue light.
Wow, we did not have the same view on this number... A lot of explanations you did I never saw and won’t see whilst viewing this. Like the “what comes next” I interpreted as “he’s the king, and you shall wait for his authority to ask the question!”. So interesting to see that we all can have such different interpretations to one single performance Also: The Awesome, wow..! I like much more this way, it’s so sarcastic and plays to how I viewed the light changing to blue - stubbornness and almost child like, not having power over the lightbooth.

Groff has said publicly - and it was confirmed by his cast mates - that he is a spitter. I see it as, he is so immersed in his character, that he doesn’t notice it and/or try to stop it.
Regarding the "all alone, across the sea" moment. I think he played it perfectly. Coming off of the "awesome, wow" sarcastic attitude, the King slips into a moment of empathy. It accentuates his psychological unstableness. Remember, the King is going mad. There are psychological layers to the character. And this scene is lacking the attack on the audience. On stage, he is off center, in the dark. Giving the impression that he is alone with his thoughts. JG did a stellar job conveying all those emotions and mental instability.
I liked your perspective on the "I have a small query for you". I always took it as the king pausing for dramatic effect, as we have come to expect in plays/movies/etc. Because of COURSE the king would wanna be dramatic. But, it's also likely that he's so baffled by the course of the war that he coulda just stumbled upon the answer. Good call!
Interesting thought on the 'what comes next line'. I've always interpreted it as the King asking/mocking the US. What on earth are you going to do now you don't have me protecting you and ruling you?!
I always liked the final "on your own" sung exactly like Eponine in Les Mis. Does he feel like Eponine, jilted by the States? Is he doing the "you can't reject me because I'm rejecting you?" So many possible interpretations to a tiny moment.

I took this completely differently, the King comes off as someone who is so confident and arrogant that his empire can crumble around him while he stays completely oblivious because he doesn't think it's possible. The awesome wow comes from him trying to put himself up on a pedestal by saying they will never be as good at running a country/empire as he is at running one. I don't think there is any self reflection in him getting worried for himself due to the king being too clouded by arrogance and surrounded by yes men.
Bear in mind - every filmed/recorded performance is subject to a director and an editor. The version that you prefer may not be the one that those two entities want for the entire project. Just a thought...
I actually think Jonathan portrays the perfect amount of depth for king George relative to the show. The show wants us to understand and empathize with even the characters that are enemies to the protagonist. i.e Burr and Jefferson. The king is the only character that gets no depth because there has to be a separation between the evil relative to the American story and the evil relative to Hamilton's story. The first is supposed to be absolute and needs the audience to be entirely on the American side. The latter has to be open to interpretation to help the character development of Hamilton within the American story. Jonathan's performance is telling the audience "the king is a joke, he has no depth, don't worry about what happens to him".
I wasn't expecting another analysis from Jonathan Groff as King George III, what a gift! Thank you for your analysis. I know a lot of people are saying they disagree with the note you gave about the "awesome, wow," but I think that's one of the beauties of live theater - it can be different each time, it can be interpreted differently by each person, and there isn't a 'right' and 'wrong' way to do so many little moments. Except for revealing Pharoah as Elvis too early, that's just a disaster every time.

The reason he behaved in such a bizarre manner is because he suffered from Porphyria, which turned his urine blue, and affected him greatly. 💙

I just watched the Hamilfilm for the first time (I recently got the budget back to get disney+) and I was in LOVE with this number! I’d love a reaction to Hamilton’s Guns and Ships and literally anything from Six and deafwest Spring Awakening
Ingerpretation of the blue: the whole musical is just how things went in the madness altered mind of king george.
People will come up with that exact kind of theory for literally every movie or play. It's become a bit boring by now
I interpret or feel in the boot stamp light change as a way to communicate that the King is still important. A very intelligent way of saying “Yes, I lost, but Im still dangerous and extremely powerfull”

I think the footstomp light switch is more that things have fallen apart so much that his followers can't tell where he's going (or switched their focus to something other than him) and he has to (regrettably) spell his moves out clearly and as a consequence lose some of his affect/power. It's genius!!
I'd just like to point out that the blue lighting could also be interpreted as king George's supposed illness porphyria which in rare cases as supposed with king George it turns the urine blue that was also what they thought turned him mad at the time

People in power tend to let questions hang. I interpret the delay between "... Query for you" and "What comes next?" As someone so accustomed to everyone waiting for them to finish talking it is natural to pause and intentionally drive up the tension for the real question, "What comes next?"
You also have to think about "the madness of King George," and people who are interested in history will appreciate the way he plays it, and not only think of a "stable" stage character.
I was in elementary school when Hamilton released. 2014-15 was a great year. My favorite thing about the musical that I think so many forget is the HAM4HAM lottery they held outside the theatre. You paid $10 (a Hamilton) for a chance at a front row seat to the show with (I think) only 10 tickets drawn each show/night. This is significant since a standard ticket ranged anywhere from $250-500! I participated twice but didn’t win. What’s even more unfortunate is the fact that I missed the period when they allowed American history students to watch the live broadway musical for free!

King's control over the show- I love in the first song he gives direction to the Orchestra to end the song and that connects to this song and the blue light.

Wow, we did not have the same view on this number... A lot of explanations you did I never saw and won’t see whilst viewing this. Like the “what comes next” I interpreted as “he’s the king, and you shall wait for his authority to ask the question!”.
So interesting to see that we all can have such different interpretations to one single performance
Also: The Awesome, wow..! I like much more this way, it’s so sarcastic and plays to how I viewed the light changing to blue - stubbornness and almost child like, not having power over the lightbooth.

Groff has said publicly - and it was confirmed by his cast mates - that he is a spitter. I see it as, he is so immersed in his character, that he doesn’t notice it and/or try to stop it.

Regarding the "all alone, across the sea" moment. I think he played it perfectly. Coming off of the "awesome, wow" sarcastic attitude, the King slips into a moment of empathy. It accentuates his psychological unstableness. Remember, the King is going mad. There are psychological layers to the character. And this scene is lacking the attack on the audience. On stage, he is off center, in the dark. Giving the impression that he is alone with his thoughts. JG did a stellar job conveying all those emotions and mental instability.

I liked your perspective on the "I have a small query for you". I always took it as the king pausing for dramatic effect, as we have come to expect in plays/movies/etc. Because of COURSE the king would wanna be dramatic. But, it's also likely that he's so baffled by the course of the war that he coulda just stumbled upon the answer. Good call!

I always liked the final "on your own" sung exactly like Eponine in Les Mis. Does he feel like Eponine, jilted by the States? Is he doing the "you can't reject me because I'm rejecting you?" So many possible interpretations to a tiny moment.

I took this completely differently, the King comes off as someone who is so confident and arrogant that his empire can crumble around him while he stays completely oblivious because he doesn't think it's possible. The awesome wow comes from him trying to put himself up on a pedestal by saying they will never be as good at running a country/empire as he is at running one. I don't think there is any self reflection in him getting worried for himself due to the king being too clouded by arrogance and surrounded by yes men.
Did Marc ever do the third King song? I've seen a lot of Hamilton videos but not Goff's third song.
Bear in mind - every filmed/recorded performance is subject to a director and an editor. The version that you prefer may not be the one that those two entities want for the entire project. Just a thought...

I actually think Jonathan portrays the perfect amount of depth for king George relative to the show. The show wants us to understand and empathize with even the characters that are enemies to the protagonist. i.e Burr and Jefferson. The king is the only character that gets no depth because there has to be a separation between the evil relative to the American story and the evil relative to Hamilton's story. The first is supposed to be absolute and needs the audience to be entirely on the American side. The latter has to be open to interpretation to help the character development of Hamilton within the American story. Jonathan's performance is telling the audience "the king is a joke, he has no depth, don't worry about what happens to him".
The blue part is so ironic because when the king got a disease it made him pee blue

I wasn't expecting another analysis from Jonathan Groff as King George III, what a gift! Thank you for your analysis. I know a lot of people are saying they disagree with the note you gave about the "awesome, wow," but I think that's one of the beauties of live theater - it can be different each time, it can be interpreted differently by each person, and there isn't a 'right' and 'wrong' way to do so many little moments.
Except for revealing Pharoah as Elvis too early, that's just a disaster every time.
I would love to see you compare and contrast this with Michael Jibson's portrayal of King George!
