Really interesting discussion. I didn't know Grand Strategy games were 10% of the top 100 games on Steam. That's huge! I've always considered strategy games something too nerdy to be mainstream, but over the decades I realized that a lot of players out of the bubble actually love them. I have great hopes about Ara. For what I've seen so far, it combines the best elements of a 4x game with the craft system common in games that simulates production chain. It's exactly something that I always hoped to see in a Civ installment.
I always love Stellaris- I loved tons of 4x games before then, but Stellaris is more of a grand strategy; my problem with most grand strategies is you are given a country that is already made and ready to go- meaning that all those systems in play, if you don't know what you are doing will eff you up before you realise why you screwed up. Stellaris was different, as it starts from the dawn of a new civ, you can slowly learn each element through each playstyle until you finally have a complete picture. The reason I never got into other grand strategies is I always had a harder time with that; with ara I am excited since it feels more complex than a normal 4x but still starts at the beginning. It really feels similar to stellaris in the best way possible and I look forward to it. Also, hearing you say how much you love Civ4 and Wonders helps, because I too love Civ 4 most of all- and wonders. Really excited about this one.
an era ago some Empire II got me into tactical/strategy games. loved it, but with time drifted more into grand strategy/4x. looks like ARA will take us into the next chapter
Agree with you on 4X. There are 4X that have not diplomacy, like Warhammer 40k Gladius, full war, and it's as clone of Civilization in a single era as a game can be :D So yes Might and magic is a 4X
Civ 2 was my first, but my memory of playing it is very hazy. I've got great memories of playing Civ 3 and 4 though. I'm working on getting some mods to work with Civ 3 right now.
"Dont nickpick everything, let's go with vibes" says the guy who spends 40 minutes in a game play in the menu checking if it has custom keybinding or not and will call a game crap if it doesn't.
This is what's wrong with some gamers, they haven't even played the game yet, heck there is barely footage, but already moaning and whining about longevity of the game. Pretty sure you overestimate how many people actually use mods for these kind of games anyways.
@@ThaGamingMisfit I've been playing civ 6 and a lot of mods change the game and make it more exciting even without dlcs. I also create mods that thousands use every game they have. I don't think its bad to have an idea if they would support mods.

My first 4x was Civ 1 on the Amiga. I have many fond memories playing it with my father, alternating turns between us. I've always stuck with Civ as I loved it, but after the death of real world maps and true (ish) history I've lost faith. With ARA I have hope again and if I see a real world map with true start locations then I'm going to be thrilled!
And here I thought this was going to be about Ara itself and not some discussion about 4x in general that could of been talked about 10 months ago. Five days away from launch and this is what we get. Inexcusable.
You didn't get sufficient discussion of "Ara itself," whatever that means, in the previous 22 episodes? I do single player pretty exclusively & don't spend much time on behind the scenes, much less player commentary (bc I tend to get drawn into pointless arguments with entitled haters), so terms like 4X can easily become common before I've ever heard of them. Point being, I appreciated this, and there are lots of other episodes that prob have lots of what you prefer.
it uses their inhouse oxide engine, the fame of ashes of the singularity and their space techdemo. They have been pivital in DX technologies and displaying what they are capable of. In this game, there is a bunch of tiny units. Other engines would bend to their knees.

Ahh it’s not hard. Grand strategy is about scope.. it’s on a national level rather than then operational or tactical level. There are 4x that are more limited in scope like the 40K 4x. Then there are grand strategy that are not 4x , like the once that deal with world wars

Make RTS Great Again
yeah, remember Rise of Nations
AoE4 is the pinnacle of RTS. ARA will in a sense be more like an RTS than a traditional turn based game since everyone's turn is at the same time
They're giving historical leaders pronouns and making them "non binary"...
Unfortunately, they're making "they/them" leaders ...
