Welcome to my highlights of the 2024 Geneva International Motor Show Press Day at Palexpo in Geneva on 26th February 2024.
We saw the Renault Scenic EV named as Car of the Year 2024 and the new Renault 5 eTech being the stand-out star of the show; there were also very strong showings from IM, MG, BYD and Dacia and plenty more to see. These shows are now featuring electric cars more heavily than ever as you might expect in 2024 so this is a must see for EV fans.

IM is part of SAIC like MG. The interior quality seems great. German car makers should be worried.
Yes, they basically shared a stand. Interiors were pretty amazing.
The undisputed star of the show is the BYD U8
it is by far the most advance car in the world.
Also China's CATL to supply car batteries and electric motors to Nissan and Renault. So Basicly Renault is using Chinese tech.

Must admit the MG 7 + 9 looked very classy, not what we originally got from MG just a couple of years ago .
Legacy automakers are really going to have to buck their ideas up .
Interior quality was off the charts. Nothing like we’ve seen from MG before.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru couple of years ago I wouldn't have touched one, but they are seriously impressing me , certainly the next couple are going to be very interesting (;and painful for some car manufacturers) .

These are rebadged "rising autos" also from patent company SAIC. too euro designed for China so sales were low. Perfect for Europe. Absolutely beautiful.

You show the view that WE would get at one of these, with a bit of critical viewing, priceless. We can all just look at Johnny's LBS coverage for curated snapshots! Love the MG 7/9 footage, Quality uplift, also why no MG4 Estate there? Keep it up.

Those three bumps on the roof are actually lazer radars for auto-pilot and LDWS, very common seeing those on Chinese EVs.
I assumed it was somethign to do with auto-pilot - lasers eh! cool!
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Yeah, Huawei now has developed I would say the most advanced auto-pilot system globally for Chinese car manufacturers, with lidar and cameras.

I think the Manufacturers that bothered to turn up shows their intention to make an impact on the EV scene. Manufacturers that didn't, proves their full commitment to selling BEVs just isn't there!

You made a good point about used EVs vs the Spring. If you’re in the market for a used EV hatchback like a Zoe, Corsa-e, etc. I suspect you’ll be seeing prices fall once the Spring is on sale and the small used EV market adjusts.

Thanks for sharing this Jim. Really enjoyed seeing that lot. Loving the classics and supercars. Especially my all time fav - F40! No wonder all I've seen on social media the last few days is the new Renault 5, what with the 'relatively' small turn out of manufacturers overall. It is a wicked looking thing though. I like the new Dacia logos 👍🏼 Get yourself that light pole and she wouldn't stand a chance 🤭

Great report and actually makes me regret not making the trip to Geneva. Very disappointing to see so little support from European manufacturers - perhaps they didn’t want to be compared with the Chinese brands who seem to not just made a big leap forward but whose quality appears close to the premium German marques at lower prices. It was however telling that Renault felt confident to display their range. With the Megane E-Tech, the new Scenic and the forthcoming 5 Renault look to be on a roll and of the mainstream European manufacturers the one that really is creating some exciting EVs. It is going to be difficult to compete with the Chinese EVs on price, although the differential may be narrowed with higher tariffs, so the Europeans need to make their cars more exciting - not as boring as the Stellantis or dare I say VW Group lineups.
Very interesting to note the absence of many a big name, word on the street was that their last minute cancellation of an event a couple of year prior due to the pandemic may have been a driver for this as evidently many were very unhappy. It was still a great show, just small.
I think there has been a push back because of the high costs of the show but particularly the exorbitant hotel costs for all the manufacturers entourage. Hopefully a year of boycott might bring some realism back to the organisers, hoteliers and the authorities. For me it made an easy and cheap day out as I live quite close to Gatwick.
I got a half decent price at the ibis right by the convention centre. A journo I know was there after an invitation from a manufacturer and they were at the Hilton which I believe was around £1k per night!

Yes a poor turnout from Europe's manufacturing was hoping a view of Peugeot and Renault new EV range.

Crazy how no German brands at the Geneva motor show. I think these companies are in a total tailspin as far as the EV future is concerned. Probably not helped by what the EU is trying to dictate. 🤔

I see people walking around with camera crews and directors and find myself bumbling around so sometimes get a bit of imposter syndrome at these things.

I saw we are due to get a new MG 5. Basically an MG4 with a bigger boot. That'll be something provided it's no too dear. Would like to see the 😅MG6 and 7 too.

Really good vid Jim, I know what these shows are like for public, Paris and Frankfurt, crazy, Really like that MG7 and the 9, surprise a few other Chinese brands weren't there, Nio and Xpeng to name a couple, hopefully see a few at Goodwood this year!

Pretty alarming the decline in size of the event when you think that the industry is going through it's biggest evolution in it's history it might be the other way. Just shows the money in agriculture when Agritechnica in Germany and Lamma at the NEC are jam packed and require more space evey year

BYD names car in Chinese dynasty, Tang is one of the strongest dynasties in history the start of Silk Road trade route, there’s nothing unfortunate about that name.

They won’t all make it over here I’m sure but they are certainly coming in droves.
It’s a shame the way most shows have gone. Was in the last Paris show and much the same. A real disappointment.

I think the "Car of the Year" is always the car that has no interest and is totally boring! Thus calling it "Car of the Year" means the Joe Public doesn't have to think, they can just go to the dealer and buy it..

The German brands were probably aware of the absolutely outstanding products that were exhibited by the Chinese manufacturers and didn't want to embarrass themselves!

Amazing how small the Geneva show is, it used to be the world's premier car show.
NO JLR. Yes, so small this year but still good. I hope it comes back to something close to what it used to be.
Chinese companies hired alot of german engineer and designer. We shouldn't be afraid to use the best.

Question, when India , china , america won’t give up fossil fuels , doesn’t matter what we do in england, plus how’s electric made , and how much co2 goes into making an electric car plus transporting ? Just so some aresole can drive down the road thinking that they and everyone else thinks their saving the planet !
Rather than saving the planet (there are loads of nonsense arguments on both sides of this one and the actual truth is harder to find than you think), you're 100% improving the air quality where you live a bit. Electricity is produced using renewables in this country a lot now but, as you rightly say, a lot of countries simply don't give a toss and still burn stuff. I'd much rather me and my kids breathe cleaner air (but I also love a V8). Ordinary World is a banging tune by the way - even if they did play it for about 3 hours non-stop at the motor show. I've got an EV but not for planet-saving reasons.

Who would of thought a 1200+ HP Monster Luxury SUV that can also cross a small river and launch drones from it's center console , only from the country currently developing trains that go faster than the speed of sound.
What a disappointing show, only 2 halls used. Only good bit was getting to see R5.
I still enjoyed it but it needs to be double the size at least next year

Visited today (28th Feb) after booking flights months ago. The show was terrible , due to so many abscent big names. The classics and the new Renault 5 were the high point but the many electric ~Chinese were a big switch off - seen one seen them all! they were all the same . Shame on you Geneva!
I didn’t think the Chinese cars were samey at all. No more than with any other brand. Its a shame there weren’t more manufacturers though; I thinks its a reaction to the show getting cancelled at the last minute in 2020. I still enjoyed it despite it being tiny (and that’s what she said).

The EV sale has almost stopped.The interest has cooled down . Retro cars have been an around for many years and has faded away! I think that the retro waveMG is finished !Stop your senseless adverts.Irritating ! MG ? But it is any good at this price ? Chinese EV is not my kind of tea .They are state supported from the Chinese government ,unfair competition to the European EV production !
Do you think I get to travel Geneva, spend 3 days making a video without a sponsor - do you think I can do that purely on UA-cam revenue? NO! The only pure electric car company in 5 years from now is Tesla, I think. Great to see some of the companies are waking up and focusing on Hybrids which I believe is the real future of cars. I can be wrong but let us see what happens.
