  • You may not be immediately familiar with the name Angela Conner - but the chances are you have been stopped in your tracks by her work.
If you have ever visited some of the most well-known stately homes in England - such as Chatsworth House, Hatfield House, or Longleat House - or visited Noel Coward’s estate in Jamaica, or taken a stroll around London or indeed many other great cities, you will no doubt have been unable to stop yourself from taking a quiet moment to admire a sculptural work by Angela Conner.
From monumental kinetic public sculptures through to the most intricate and detailed portraits commissioned by many a famous aficionado and destined for private collections, Angela’s body of work is breathtaking for its sheer range. Her long-standing career in art, despite no formal education, is a testament to her instinctive passion and determination.
‘I started making sculpture when all of us start making sculpture - as a child - with cardboard, paper and glue. I guess the difference is that I never stopped.’ Angela Conner
With sitters as diverse as the late Queen Elizabeth II and the elusive artist Lucian Freud, for Angela, the emotions conjured by her sculptures were the most important aspect of her work. Conner strove to create pieces that encouraged active engagement from the public, and what remains true to all her sculptures is an emotional feeling and connection, whether this may be to the subject she is modelling or the environment and intricacies of nature inspiring her greatest kinetic work.
In this extended film we glean further insights into this remarkable sculptor from her husband, renowned photographer and filmmaker John Bulmer, daughter Georgia Bulmer Ferreira, as well as the testimony from the wonderful patron and property developer Pat Doherty, and high praise from the erudite and astute Rachel Campbell-Johnston, former Art Critic for The Times for over 20 years, as they all pay tribute to the awe-inspiring and phenomenal sculptor, artist, wife, mother, friend and trail-blazing powerhouse that is Angela Conner.
An auction of Angela Conner’s Studio Collection will take place at Dreweatts on Thursday 11 July 2024.
