I'm so here for this. I love these to see what balls are good and not. Even though Darren doesn't use good and not good. But what he prefers. I guess I need to get used to that lingo if I want to try and get on a contract with a company.
Just got a physix blackout two weeks ago and I have already finished top 10 in two tournaments and raised my season average 10 pins 😂. Looking forward to seeing how you throw it more because I love it

Ive been throwing the Physix Blackout for a few weeks now. I can do anything with it. It hits like a mack truck. Attention Star, Physix, and Ion Max Pro are my three ball bag.
I am still in love with my Piranha/c Ceramicore the Emerald Green one that i used in the 90s! Was such an amazing ball to roll!

Darren it was great to see you at the matchmaker event in Columbus. Wanted to get a picture but you had to zoom off shortly before I was going to ask. Good to see Chris too. I really liked all the balls you had available there. Physix Blackout was my favorite, I loved the VEBO and the Physix series. The sublime focus was my second favorite which surprised me. Sleeper ball!

Great video! I'm getting back on the lanes after not bowling much during the pandemic, and I'm looking to replace my Code Black that I love and has taken a beating. Suggestions? Kind of eyeing the Equinox once it comes out.
If you’re primarily going to be bowling on a house shot, Equinox and Attention Star would work really well and compare best to the Code Black. However, bowling balls keep getting stronger to keep up with the heavier oil volumes, so even though the specs match up well, odds are these 2 newer balls will be slightly stronger overall. If you’ve got good ball speed and/or lower revs, these 2 would work great! Otherwise I’d personally lean to something slightly weaker like Zen 25 or Summit Peak. I love my Zen 25
I feel doing a “last half of the previous year, first half of current year” tier list may work better. My reasoning is you’d have more time (possibly) to throw the balls that come out at the end of the calendar year in tournaments and/or on tour, thus giving you more insight on how they fit for you.

I've never thrown a SPI ball yet, but they've had so many great looking ones last year and this year already.
Darren, could you make a follow up to this video since there are a handful of balls that he hasn't thrown on tour like the Origin? Maybe they get promoted to the rice/staple category or gets an updated opinion? Always love the explanations and insights you have as a tour pro!
Also, bought a Attention Star (due to the hype and seeing Belmo throw it) and it DOES NOT DISAPPOINT ESPECIALLY AS A 2 HANDER. My new favorite ball after the OG Hy-Road!

Darren is a Storm staffer so you not gonna get any feedback for that. That is why this list is only storm/roto grip/900 global. You would need to find a review from another youtuber.
Attention Star and Optimum idol solid have been phenomenal. Sad the Optimum Idol got discontinued
Great episode, Darren. Happy New Year Tang Dynasty! 🐍 As far as SPI goes, I ❤ my Pitch Black and Phaze 2, not 2024 though. The Duo and Hustle M-M are in the car (2023). I am planning on adding the Physix Blackout (2024) and Zen 25 (2025?) to the arsenal.
My Ascent is first out on house shot. I leave it lane shine. Occasionally taking it back to box at 4k. Drilled very agressive. Goes through the front. Smooth in the back. Ion pro after that. Stay in the oil

I had such a bad experience with a pro shop when I got my Absolute Power drilled. It doesn't fit right and it's uncomfortable to throw. I love the ball though! I want one that actually fits my hand

Before league started, I got the Sublime Focus and added the X Cell after Christmas. Upgraded from Idol and Idol Pearl. Very happy with my choices.

My favorite bowling balls are the IQ Tour, Ion Pro, Virtual Energy Blackout.
One day I'll get an Ion Max for my strong ball!

It is usually a norm to rank balls in a calendar year, but I think you can do a tier list video every quarter and do balls in the last 12 months. We get more tier videos and you get more views. Would be interesting to see if balls move tiers as you throw it more.

Got a Physix blackout. I’m just a 170 avg bowler and have already had 3 200 games with it. If building a 4 ball arsenal for nationals besides the spare ball, what other two balls (or types of balls) would you add? I’m about low 14’s on the monitor and balanced revs for my speed (1 handed old guy).
Lol the two balls that are in your car category are the ones I'll start with depending on the lanes. The road and the lightning, I carry a 210 average and love these where I bowl. Also, I have the ruby when the lanes get really dry.

Ion pro if the fronts aren't burnt is a great transition ball. Predictable and smooth depending on your layout

honestlyyyy, the Roto Grip Xcell was the most underrated bowling ball and my guess is because it wasnt flashy and sort of ehh looking buttttt that ball is amazinggggg, saw so many bowlers in league throw 300 with that ball
+1 for tier list time change. Would be also be sick to see a tier list for your tournament bag and what you used for what pattern.
You should do the last 13 or 14 months. If a ball blows you away because it's so good in that 1-2 month overlap, include it that year, if there's not enough ball time, next year's video

Mostly agree with all of this. Nothing wildly off from how I’d rank it so I feel like I’m a less bad bowler so yay.
I do agree with your thought that doing a different cut line may work better since you don’t get a lot of time with the late releases.
I like the video, but I wish it included a copy of the graf with a list of the balls mentioned.

Hey Darren, to expand on this series could you do best storm balls by decade? I.e. maybe best 5 balls of each decade going back to maybe the 80’s
For 'Ball of the Year" I think it should be the ball that had the biggest impact in the year, regardless of release date. maybe limit it to releases in the past 3 years so balls like the tour, phaze 2 and purple hammer dont dominate
Love the video... I get a headache hearing all the terms (strong/weak/clean, ect)... I've been bowling since the early 80s or late 70s, and STILL can't get into the terms... I see a ball(on videos like this)that I might like, and buy it... Thanks for these videos...

Top bowling balls for me last year were Attention star, Ion Pro. In last few years would add Virtual Energy Blackout and Dark Code. Non storm would be Envy tour Solid.

Left handed so don't hate me, but just shot 803 Monday with level at 1000 first 2 games, then hustle RIPP game 3 at 3000. Already have 2 RIPP and will be ordering a case when they discontinue it!
The ion pro for me does anything and everything I want it to do. I also have a 550+ rev rate so that might be why

Hustles and Tropical Surges, unless you want something stronger. Lots of people like a regular Phaze 2 as a benchmark. Haven't thrown the Phaze A.I. so not as sure, but I hear it's good. The first two will allow you to ease into learning how to hook without possibly feeling overwhelmed. I, personally, prefer the Hustle line. There are a lot.
I know a guy at the lanes who I call Mr. Hustle because he has six variations and his dad's Black Widow Legend. Our pro shop guy says he could've gone pro, but didn't. I consider that a very strong endorsement.
Whatever you decide, experiment with surfaces changes at some point and have fun. I usually say pick something you like to look at just in case that's all you end up doing. You might get hurt or not bowl as much as you thought, so, unless there's a good reason, pick whatever makes you happy without overwhelming yourself. Good luck!

My staple 6 right now and I am a lefty is… Optimum Idol, Optimum Idol Pearl, ION Pro Max. Bag 2 VEBO, Phaze II, and my Mix. My UC3 is my urethane right now for my 7th ball. However I am feeling the Pitch Black though…

Personally I love the "Best ball of 2024" videos, but for you guys you could do a "Best Ball of the 2024 Tour" and put it out before 2024 ends that way it can have 2023 balls in it, or even add sleeper balls that remain top dog like the Phaze II.

I've been thinking about getting either the summit, Summit Peak or sublime focus (you can see a theme with the colors... lol) but unsure where to go..

From a consumer perspective, If we know that you don't have these balls in your bag, you don't know where/when to throw it, We are inclined to pass on it and therefore it does not get a high ranking.
