Dirty, messy, and cluttered??? Au contraire!!! I A D O R E her apartment, collections, displays, her style, everything about the place. It's absolutely beautiful!! I'm from the middle of last century though, we weren't into the whole "minimalist" thing. You're SO lucky, Scott.
I think many of the kinds of people complaining about the clutter of her apartment and might use a term like “minimalism” to describe their own style, probably have little real understanding of what Minimalism is. It’s a legitimate sounding word for them to say, “I have no style”, “I’m empty inside and my surroundings reflect that”…. they’re not even aware of their condition. It’s just normal to them. They become overwhelmed by a living space like the one shown here, so they dismiss it as “clutter”.
If this is clutter bring it on. These items are extraordinarily beautiful and must of had great importance to Lauren. Her taste in everything was impeccable. She herself was classy and impeccable.
She was privileged to live with the beautiful things that she loved all around her. It was her home and she paid for them. I see nothing wrong with that. Many of us wish that we could do the same. ❤

As a designer who loves quality items- anyone who thinks that her home was cluttered is insane, she has ART TREASURES that she collected from around the world. The Value of which, I am sure was quite outstanding in dollar value- but her level of taste was off the charts elegant and very specific she knew the value of art and artifacts and was a very wise collector- so anyone that said dirty and cluttered is a neophyte that has no idea of either art, sculpture, tribal art- I was loving the video and I wished I could have been there and seen the beauty that she accumulated.... she placed items in really beautiful curated vignettes all around her home- And knowing her she was instrumental in the placement of each object.... My home is designed the very same way but sadly my pockets were not as deep as dear beautiful Lauren's.... She could do no wrong in my book and I named my first daughter Lauren as the name is beautiful.... and every Lauren I knew was beautiful and elegant.
Ms. Bacall’s collections were a reflection of her aesthetics, her intellect and her personality. She loved the stories behind her possessions and they gave her pleasure and that’s what matters.
I totally adore her home, it's a cozy reflection of things that charmed her into collecting. I love that no designer was used, she knew what she liked and where she wanted it and what for...it reminds me of my own home, my collections come and go, but my true loves stay to remind me of who and where in time...my kids will no doubt sell it all and that's alright with me, I have that cozy, granny's house feel, yet everything works and is easy on the eye and I still love it and still collect treasure.
I love her style too. Id wear every single piece of her clothing now. When I upcycle Im often making incorporating the styles I loved and found in the 40s in thrift clothing even if just like that collar on her green sweater or even the 70s blouses. Was in Macys which I had not been in a mall for like 20 years realizing many of the new clothing this past summer was the blouse from a mans's shirt I was wearing. In fact a lady asked if I bought it there. Told her no, I was shocked this 70s style came back. Ive not been to Macys or a mall in decades! I better stop commenting or you will ban me. Her apartment is my DREAM!! Just stunning and full of life, a museum. And I have been crazy about The Dakota since the first time I saw it in Rosemarys Baby, then every time I visit Manhattan I have to do a stroll through the park and end up at Strawberry Hill so I can stare at the building for awhile. By the way Lauren played a (mean) trick on me back in 1993 at a party we both attended😆. She was intimidating in person because she was so classy and composed.
I love that she was surrounded things she loved. I identify with eclectic nature. I'm a hopeless collector myself. Some things may not be of my interest, but I appreciate her collections. She obviously loved handmade art. ❤
Well, that was super interesting! If I were rich I’d spend it on making poorer people more comfortable. Sure I like pretty things, and I have a few, but nudes aren’t my thing, nor monkey vases, nor nine foot benches. But each to their own. Lauren had good taste and loved to share it with her guests and friends. Her children got the value of the apartment and it’s contents whilst she left money for her grandchildrens’ education. “Give a man a bowl of rice and he will survive for a day….teach him how to grow rice and he will be fed every day of his life.” I love that thought! People should not be dependant on their parents for ever! She was a charming, charitable and wise lady whom I never heard a bad word spoken of……That’s all I want on my epitaph. Loved your commentary!
Although in a minimalist way everything in our home is exactly like Laren Bacall's. A lot is more so my partner. Ours is not cluttered. My partner had to downsize as we decided to retire to the area we vacationed, camped, fished. I had lost many items including car, all posessions in 3 job downsizings before retirement. My item purchases were more so in my main hobby of sewing. That actually was a lifestyle because I was taught early how to sew and became the family mender. I was upcycling Doris Day type 1950s dresses of material Ive not seen yet into mini skirts. Even teachers asked where I got my clothing. All this "upcycle" trend is not new. So I mostly live used, bought used. Im not as attached if I have to give up items because like vases in a thrift store, this are tons of thrift stores! But my partner has things he bought on travels with his late wife and other items that the purchase of it was a birthday but meant other things to the event. But his late wife and her mother a hoarder. When I met him one room piled up with things like cheap ceramic sheep with fake flowers around their neck or on their head. I convinced him to clear out that room that literallly didnt have a walking path and let me make it my sewing, dressing room It worked out well for that for me. I had a place to sew and a place to sit to do my hair makeup etc. In our retirment home it was artist designed and odd. Many know the house if I tell you the town and valley we are in but not going to. We "fixed" it, estheticly and the worn out things but didnt change the basics or structure. So no closet, just an alcove. Im easy. No expensive hanger system for me. One wall just 2 6' shelves with poles. I have hung all dresses over at waist since 80s. But the bedroom close is in a bank of closets at front door so there is long hanging and a double hung closet there. On other side of closet alcove I bought the living room cubbie size book case and those fabric bins as bigger. All my items are hidden in 12 cubbies. From lingerie to jewelry to makeup and blow driers. We both dislike a lot of items out. I do have a friend I hleped moved from a 2 story 3 bedroom rental where her home looks like Lauren Bacalls to a 2 bedroom, 2nd of which is more like small office, tiny living room and kitchen home. She gave me things as we helped her move several times and especially at end. I took all that she was designatied thrift and we took it for her. She is older though acts younger. The move was a surprise. But she had a yard sale and more to come and man did she make money from it. The items she collected for years at thrift and antique stores was high quality. Several antique store buyers came and bought a lot at once and even paid more than she asked. She has a great eye for value. Her home is never dirty, always disted and vaccumed and nicely arranged. So like Lauren Bacall, a love of your items is not necessarily a hoarder. Some may say that about my sewing stash. But everyone in town still asks where I get my clothing or jean purses. I say....I made them! I can tell you more where I bought the jean blings at $1 10 years ago then anything else! Hoarding is throw things in a shed and letting them decay! I do sell a bit but Im such a bad salesperson, I give things away for free. I teach sewing free if anyone wants becuase dang if they dont even show for free?! Id like to leave everyone with a statemen. Commit in your life. You had to commite when we all only had one heavy black telephone in our hallways. We'd kill our girlfriends leaving us standing outside a club for hoursd!! 😂
I love Lauren Bacall’s apartment and her many treasures collected her lifetime. Clearly, she surrounded herself with a huge collection of fine art and all sorts of objects. Definitely, not over done. I think people surround theirselves with objects they have love and appreciation for. I know that I do. It’s apart of who we are. We tend to collect the things that we love. One can tell a lot about a person by the objects in their home. Bacall had exquisite taste. I love her John J. Audubon ‘ Birds of American ‘ American Pelican ‘ engraving. It’s a beautiful ca. 1827 - 1838 piece with a today’s market value of an estimated $200K. At any rate, wonderful taste. RIP Ms. Bacall

I love her apartment I don't think it looks dirty at all I like collecting neat stuff I cannot believe that people think that is bad and it looks dirty I think it's more jealous of beautiful stuff get real this woman was outstanding and not dirty at all
I love all the items she held close to her heart. I truly believe it's why the items commanded the prices they did when sold. I would have purchased the umbrella stand and the bench, if I was rolling in dough! Great video!

You are in my wheelhouse with a few of the art terms; if you will, the fine French cotton rag paper, Rives, is pronounced REEVES . Gesso has a J sound like Jessica, Jess-oh. Not meaning to be a brat here, you seem smart enough and interested enough in details to care. I find it interesting that she appreciated so many things; from English made antiques and furniture to Eastern European Carpets to African and Mexican Art and Objects, to contemporary Art and Sculpture. The Running thread seems to be Handmade, Hand-Crafted, wrought by artists-artisans, by hands. I get it! I think I choose my favorite things similarly.
Wow! So many inter.esting things and so much information about just one small space. I'm looking forward to Part 02. I'm something of a minimalist (you wouldn't know it if you saw my shelves and stacks of books and the jars full of pens!) so I don't think I would purchase any of the items here if I could, nice though they are. If Ms. Bacall had good-quality pens in her writing desk, those would be of much interest to me. I have the Archictectural Digest issue that has Paul Theroux's article about the auction of Marilyn Monroe's belongings in the 1990's. Her belongings sold for far more than expected. Marilyn Monroe's belongings were quite different from Lauren Bacall's; everyday items, few if any items that would be valuable if not previously owned by Monroe. The author actually said that the contents of the Marilyn Monroe auction were mostly those of a yard sale. The Lauren Bacall items are of a much higher quality and greater diversity which is not a put-down of Marilyn Monroe. Some people are just more interested in collecting than others.
I did enjoy it@@StrangeHistoryX. Have you seen "Glenn Close visits with Lauren Bacall and her Papillion, Sophie"? Very rare footage of Lauren Bacall in her Dakota Apartment number 43. Btw, have you considered doing a feature on Freddy Mercury? The recent auction at Sotherby's netted $50 million. I never understood why close family members sell such personal items. It's not like they need the money.
Who would say that about her home? People are very 😡 her apartment was beautiful, clean, immaculate and perfect. I had the privilege of being in it. I lived in N.Y. She was one of my clients and I used to take shoes for her to try and buy. She was a size 43 in women's shoes, therefore every time I would get a new collection I would go there so she could try them in the comfort of her home. They would set me in the Library and I would wait for her to be ready to see me. She was always presentable and beautiful. Betty had class, she would probably laugh at these comments about her home.
That's awesome. Did she know what kind of shoes you were going to bring, or did you know her taste, or did you bring a wide variety for her to choose from? This is fascinating. Thanks for sharing.

When I watched your first video on Bacall’s apartment it was actually her collection that I was most drawn to. I didn’t see clutter; I saw a well curated apartment with amazing furniture and art [much of which looks mid-century modern]. Thanks for doing videos just on the collection.

Very much enjoyed both your tour of Ms. Bacall’s apartment, and the deep dive into its contents. I sent both to a family member and they also enjoyed. (BTW: Not to be “that guy”, but I gently submit it’s pronounced “jess-oh” not “guess-oh”.)
Who's complaining. Tsk. Tsk. Whether they be wealthy or not, her home looks like a grandmother's home. I bet her grandkids loved it. Over the years, your house fills up with lots of living expressed as travel souvenirs, gifts, purchases, inherited items, and the like. Give her a break. Not everyone is a natural decorator and not everyone wants to hire one. And, as far as the NY accent, we know you don't do "Rs." It's OK. If you're like my NY husband, except where they don't belong like "sawr" instead of "saw" and "corfee" instead of "coffee." It's OK, just pronounce items with your fine accent.

I'd have been the winner of all the monkey items. No matter the cost. I love the sitting one and would have liked a better shot of the painting/print on the wall. It is from her living room, I have seen pictures of her with it from photo shoots from the 1970s and she has her feet next to it in a photo that is black and white, that I found on the internet. The other lot, I have seen the occasional figuring in the study and the office, but I was excited to see the camel featured so heavily...
Ok im typing so much though I better subscribe! I love watching you types of videos because every once in a while you see somethng that you think ok that seems like something good. Got a brand new never used tea pot. It was authorized reproduction worth $300. But if original would be more like $1000. Paid $1. It was a little known push to do art deco again in a kind of modern way? Hard to describe.
Dirty and cluttered? No. Some people are minimalist some maximimist. Lauren had some beautiful items. A beautiful apartment. It was lovely and a privilege to have a look inside.
Interesting people, in my experience, enjoy and may even need to surround themselves with interesting things. And, ALWAYS, books. John Waters said it best;-)
The place isn't cluttered, it's full. Clutter intimates unrulyness with a mix of valued as well as disposable items. In this apartment, the madness of the collection is controlled, there is a place for everything and everything is in its place. This design style is difficult to reproduce as it takes decades to evolve and it reflects the layering of the changing tastes of the collector. As far as the idea of this apartment being dirty, I seriously doubt that she dusted anything, but she did have a team that did and did so weekly. Don't confuse this with a scene out of "Hoarders". Gesso as a word makes the speaker want to put an u in it, but the g is actually pronounced as a j. The English language can be cryptic.
16:33 - The horseshoe on this carving is hung upside down. It's my understanding that if the shoe is hung this way, your luck runs out, hung the opposite way holds your luck!
This is in no way cluttered, messy or dirty. I am such a maximalist and share a great love of curated art, as is witnessed by anyone who enters my home. A home that is always open for others to share an afternoon of tea and crumpets or bourbon and stogies while ruminating over the works of such greats as Byron, Van Goph, DaVinci and more.
However, should I desire to display great artistic works, I must crudely paint them myself as my pockets are also not nearly as deep as were the lovely Laurens.
IN the 90's, My mother-in-law gave me a sketch picture bought from an estate sale. Signed and drawn by Lauren Bacall. I THREW the picture away and kept the frame. Uggg. Through the years, I can't believe I did such a stupid thing. 😢. I never looked into the drawing.
It’s a very Victorian home. Collections were all the rage and people wanted to see their collections. Which is much different than today where people put their valuables in boxes inside dark cabinets inside safes.
Aw Poor guy! My partner born in Masschusettes! so he often has "idears!" With my parents heritage yet scholarly approach to life and mixed Scottish, English and Canadian accents because of being born and living there....us kids stuttered. It was also vowel sounds. When scolding my kids my out and about really came out! They laughed when I said cut it out. We also said all consonants so sounded more like newscasters. In 60s beach boys era I had to learn to slang or no one understood me. It's Ja (short a) co(like oh no) bee-an. The thing about language English is the most borrowed and as I noted on another video root words make a difference as well as the language. Spanish often says letters as V where we say V and Y for double LL, and long E for I. I studied Latin roots so it helps but Latin also borrowed from Greek and Roman. So there you go! Traditions arise to like the majolica dishes are from the country(Island?) Majorica. My aunt visited it living in Scotland. She called the Island Maijorca (like my-yorka) like it looks but the cermanics Ma-jolly-ca in one sentence! I have no idea what to call either! gesso is said jesso as far as I know. Just a note to any artists, since we grew up poor and stayed poor, you can make anything. Dont be fooled into getting expensive art supplies if you cannot afford them. They are all "made".

I saw the first video and I knew right away what I was looking at. A decorator would have sterilized the place. I felt like I was in a home not a movie set.
Yes. I use Gesso in my art daily yet I was pronouncing it wrong , oh well. You videos on Lauren aka Betty are charming no matter how you pronounce drawers. It is just regional in our country and you are doing great.
I really wish some designers would pay attention to how old furniture was made. They can make it modern but its the use. That corner cabinet in the bedroom is great because it has regular sized drawers a top and then display shelves above. So much furiture besides being cheaply made is not that useful. My mother bought small bits of furniture when I was young at thrift stores. So we had 1940s end tables. It made me appreciate real things. The only plastic I have is a few tuperware things and most of that is the saved boxes that came with the deli meat. Hate plastic.
I have created a cluttered apartment and see zero value in Becall's taste in virtually everything including her furniture and choice of location. To each their own but her apt. looks to my eye like a flea market - and how!
How did she raise three kids and go through one or two more husbands in there? In a two bedroom apartment? And, yes, the place is an absolute mess, not to mention the draining mint green living room which was apparently later painted some overwhelming shade of blue.

I do have a friend I hleped moved from a 2 story 3 bedroom rental where her home looks like Lauren Bacalls to a 2 bedroom, 2nd of which is more like small office, tiny living room and kitchen home. She gave me things as we helped her move several times and especially at end. I took all that she was designatied thrift and we took it for her. She is older though acts younger. The move was a surprise. But she had a yard sale and more to come and man did she make money from it. The items she collected for years at thrift and antique stores was high quality. Several antique store buyers came and bought a lot at once and even paid more than she asked. She has a great eye for value. Her home is never dirty, always disted and vaccumed and nicely arranged. So like Lauren Bacall, a love of your items is not necessarily a hoarder. Some may say that about my sewing stash. But everyone in town still asks where I get my clothing or jean purses. I say....I made them! I can tell you more where I bought the jean blings at $1 10 years ago then anything else! Hoarding is throw things in a shed and letting them decay! I do sell a bit but Im such a bad salesperson, I give things away for free. I teach sewing free if anyone wants becuase dang if they dont even show for free?! Id like to leave everyone with a statemen. Commit in your life. You had to commite when we all only had one heavy black telephone in our hallways. We'd kill our girlfriends leaving us standing outside a club for hoursd!! 😂
I could’ve happily lived in Miss Bacall’s apartment just as she left it! Absolutely love it and her decor.

I love Lauren Bacall’s apartment and her many treasures collected her lifetime. Clearly, she surrounded herself with a huge collection of fine art and all sorts of objects. Definitely, not over done. I think people surround theirselves with objects they have love and appreciation for. I know that I do. It’s apart of who we are. We tend to collect the things that we love. One can tell a lot about a person by the objects in their home. Bacall had exquisite taste. I love her John J. Audubon ‘ Birds of American ‘ American Pelican ‘ engraving. It’s a beautiful ca. 1827 - 1838 piece with a today’s market value of an estimated $200K. At any rate, wonderful taste. RIP Ms. Bacall

I love her apartment I don't think it looks dirty at all I like collecting neat stuff I cannot believe that people think that is bad and it looks dirty I think it's more jealous of beautiful stuff get real this woman was outstanding and not dirty at all

You are in my wheelhouse with a few of the art terms; if you will, the fine French cotton rag paper, Rives, is pronounced REEVES . Gesso has a J sound like Jessica, Jess-oh. Not meaning to be a brat here, you seem smart enough and interested enough in details to care. I find it interesting that she appreciated so many things; from English made antiques and furniture to Eastern European Carpets to African and Mexican Art and Objects, to contemporary Art and Sculpture. The Running thread seems to be Handmade, Hand-Crafted, wrought by artists-artisans, by hands. I get it! I think I choose my favorite things similarly.

Wow! So many inter.esting things and so much information about just one small space. I'm looking forward to Part 02. I'm something of a minimalist (you wouldn't know it if you saw my shelves and stacks of books and the jars full of pens!) so I don't think I would purchase any of the items here if I could, nice though they are. If Ms. Bacall had good-quality pens in her writing desk, those would be of much interest to me.
I have the Archictectural Digest issue that has Paul Theroux's article about the auction of Marilyn Monroe's belongings in the 1990's. Her belongings sold for far more than expected. Marilyn Monroe's belongings were quite different from Lauren Bacall's; everyday items, few if any items that would be valuable if not previously owned by Monroe. The author actually said that the contents of the Marilyn Monroe auction were mostly those of a yard sale. The Lauren Bacall items are of a much higher quality and greater diversity which is not a put-down of Marilyn Monroe. Some people are just more interested in collecting than others.
It is a certain style and certain time. Her things are intresting and lovely.

Btw, have you considered doing a feature on Freddy Mercury? The recent auction at Sotherby's netted $50 million. I never understood why close family members sell such personal items. It's not like they need the money.
Who would say that about her home? People are very 😡 her apartment was beautiful, clean, immaculate and perfect.
I had the privilege of being in it. I lived in N.Y. She was one of my clients and I used to take shoes for her to try and buy.
She was a size 43 in women's shoes, therefore every time I would get a new collection I would go there so she could try them in the comfort of her home. They would set me in the Library and I would wait for her to be ready to see me. She was always presentable and beautiful. Betty had class, she would probably laugh at these comments about her home.

Who's complaining. Tsk. Tsk. Whether they be wealthy or not, her home looks like a grandmother's home. I bet her grandkids loved it. Over the years, your house fills up with lots of living expressed as travel souvenirs, gifts, purchases, inherited items, and the like. Give her a break. Not everyone is a natural decorator and not everyone wants to hire one. And, as far as the NY accent, we know you don't do "Rs." It's OK. If you're like my NY husband, except where they don't belong like "sawr" instead of "saw" and "corfee" instead of "coffee." It's OK, just pronounce items with your fine accent.

It is from her living room, I have seen pictures of her with it from photo shoots from the 1970s and she has her feet next to it in a photo that is black and white, that I found on the internet. The other lot, I have seen the occasional figuring in the study and the office, but I was excited to see the camel featured so heavily...

Ok im typing so much though I better subscribe! I love watching you types of videos because every once in a while you see somethng that you think ok that seems like something good. Got a brand new never used tea pot. It was authorized reproduction worth $300. But if original would be more like $1000. Paid $1. It was a little known push to do art deco again in a kind of modern way? Hard to describe.
Dirty and cluttered? No. Some people are minimalist some maximimist. Lauren had some beautiful items. A beautiful apartment. It was lovely and a privilege to have a look inside.
Interesting people, in my experience, enjoy and may even need to surround themselves with interesting things. And, ALWAYS, books. John Waters said it best;-)
Being minimalist gives me the creeps going to a place like hers! But that was her taste and I have to respect it.
The place isn't cluttered, it's full. Clutter intimates unrulyness with a mix of valued as well as disposable items. In this apartment, the madness of the collection is controlled, there is a place for everything and everything is in its place.
This design style is difficult to reproduce as it takes decades to evolve and it reflects the layering of the changing tastes of the collector.
As far as the idea of this apartment being dirty, I seriously doubt that she dusted anything, but she did have a team that did and did so weekly. Don't confuse this with a scene out of "Hoarders".
Gesso as a word makes the speaker want to put an u in it, but the g is actually pronounced as a j. The English language can be cryptic.
16:33 - The horseshoe on this carving is hung upside down. It's my understanding that if the shoe is hung this way, your luck runs out, hung the opposite way holds your luck!

This is in no way cluttered, messy or dirty. I am such a maximalist and share a great love of curated art, as is witnessed by anyone who enters my home. A home that is always open for others to share an afternoon of tea and crumpets or bourbon and stogies while ruminating over the works of such greats as Byron, Van Goph, DaVinci and more.
However, should I desire to display great artistic works, I must crudely paint them myself as my pockets are also not nearly as deep as were the lovely Laurens.

IN the 90's, My mother-in-law gave me a sketch picture bought from an estate sale. Signed and drawn by Lauren Bacall. I THREW the picture away and kept the frame. Uggg. Through the years, I can't believe I did such a stupid thing. 😢. I never looked into the drawing.
It’s a very Victorian home. Collections were all the rage and people wanted to see their collections. Which is much different than today where people put their valuables in boxes inside dark cabinets inside safes.
Aw Poor guy! My partner born in Masschusettes! so he often has "idears!" With my parents heritage yet scholarly approach to life and mixed Scottish, English and Canadian accents because of being born and living there....us kids stuttered. It was also vowel sounds. When scolding my kids my out and about really came out! They laughed when I said cut it out. We also said all consonants so sounded more like newscasters. In 60s beach boys era I had to learn to slang or no one understood me. It's Ja (short a) co(like oh no) bee-an. The thing about language English is the most borrowed and as I noted on another video root words make a difference as well as the language. Spanish often says letters as V where we say V and Y for double LL, and long E for I. I studied Latin roots so it helps but Latin also borrowed from Greek and Roman. So there you go! Traditions arise to like the majolica dishes are from the country(Island?) Majorica. My aunt visited it living in Scotland. She called the Island Maijorca (like my-yorka) like it looks but the cermanics Ma-jolly-ca in one sentence! I have no idea what to call either! gesso is said jesso as far as I know. Just a note to any artists, since we grew up poor and stayed poor, you can make anything. Dont be fooled into getting expensive art supplies if you cannot afford them. They are all "made".

Yes. I use Gesso in my art daily yet I was pronouncing it wrong , oh well. You videos on Lauren aka Betty are charming no matter how you pronounce drawers. It is just regional in our country and you are doing great.

I really wish some designers would pay attention to how old furniture was made. They can make it modern but its the use. That corner cabinet in the bedroom is great because it has regular sized drawers a top and then display shelves above. So much furiture besides being cheaply made is not that useful. My mother bought small bits of furniture when I was young at thrift stores. So we had 1940s end tables. It made me appreciate real things. The only plastic I have is a few tuperware things and most of that is the saved boxes that came with the deli meat. Hate plastic.
People are simply jealous, that is why they choose unimaginative minimalism as the “ style” they prefer

Your pronunciation of the Italian word "Gesso" is wrong.
Gesso...the "g" is pronounced as a "j"...so "jesso"...because it's an Italian word and they have different pronunciation rules.
I have created a cluttered apartment and see zero value in Becall's taste in virtually everything including her furniture and choice of location. To each their own but her apt. looks to my eye like a flea market - and how!
