Let the cops stop and frisk on Wall Street for a week. The practice would be outlawed the next week.

Both sides make good arguments. People need to be informed that they do not have to consent to a full search, and that a search beyond a pat down is illegal. They also cannot be compelled to empty their pockets.

Stopped about 15 times from 2003 to 2008.
    No arrests, no summons!
Most of the time I was minding my own business walking to & from school.

Their husband, son or father is not coming home because you've ensured they cannot carry a firearm concealed to defend themselves against a potential threat! And you're working to strip that right from citizens across the country!

Hmmm... Last time I checked the Constitution was the law of the land, so if cops are violating the Constitution by using Stop and Frisk, doesn't that make THEM criminals?

I agree with you in principal, but I guarantee you'll have your firearm taken and probably be arrested in New York city. The city has it's own laws and makes even carrying a firearm, unloaded, in a case, just passing through the airport illegal. So carrying anywhere in the city would be breaking their 'law'. This has already happened.

I totally agree with ya. Just that Francklin's original quote used the words "essential" and "temporary". In other words I was splitting hairs in an admittedly annoying way... sorry.

Let's get Mayor Bloomberg living like any other Joe in New York instead of his limousine and his High way of living and mingle with America. Then he'd have a right to run his mouth. It's so easy to tell somebody how to walk or what's going on when you're never wore their shoes.

I wouldn't be arrested, and my gun wouldn't be taken from me; the same reason someone with the NYPD wouldn't be arrested or have his gun taken away if he were to visit where I live.
Federal Law allows Law Enforcement to carry their weapon in all 50 States, Territories and D.C; I can even cross state lines with a loaded gun in my car ready to use in the event of need.
Never shot anyone, don't want to shoot anyone; but if I had to, I will after proper warning.

Less than 1% for guns. Statistically that's lower than they should be finding. You can search stop and frisk statistics for detailed data.

Are you including victimless drug "crimes" in that stat? I see what you're saying, but the police were taking liberties w/people's liberty. This stop-and-frisk was destined to become abusive. It's akin to general surveillance warrants, a catch-all if you will.

I think what's really on most officer's minds is meeting their quotas of tickets, arrests, etc. They obviously want to deter crime, but mostly they want to keep their jobs, and I think they use quotas to check if officers are keeping themselves busy or if they're just chilling out. I just got a ticket for biking on the sidewalk, even though I was biking right to my door!

Stop & Frisk, is just the lazy NYPD's way of making it appear that they are policing high crime areas in the 5 boroughs. You can go through any of these high-crime areas and fail to see any police officers, on foot, on bikes, in cars etc., for hours. Where are they????

  • @epicenglishify

One would think that if you are black you'd avoid committing crime like the plague then, right? If you know you are being targeted, don't commit crime. It was unfair when I was growing up that my mom was sneaky and smart and kept a sharp eye out so I didn't get away with the stuff my friends did, but it gave me the opportunity to behave better. I'm not saying racial profiling is right, but profiling in general is just part of police work.

On one hand you might accept the fact that violent crimes occur more often in minority neighborhoods, and that is why that demographic is stopped more frequently. However, I believe Stop and Frisk is also being used as a tool to propel the war on drugs by charging as many people as they can with drug possession. That is the problem I have with it

When poor white people complain about all the Mexicans stealing their jobs they get called racist more often then not.
So you're saying that when poor blacks make the same claims, they are right and that it is all the white man's fault?
"They took our jobs!" a phrase perhaps older than American itself.

  • @jakedill1104
