I have two road bikes, a mountain bike and a CX bike. If I could only keep one it would definitely be the CX. Love your videos and your beautiful country! Keep it up.
I watched Peter Sagan's chill ride pace before, I think you can ride with his pack. Your pace is awesome. And yeah, I love my CX too. Awesome bike. I changed it to a sleeker tyres, Specialized Roubaix 28c. What a blast!
I have been riding a gravel bike for 3 years now and won't look back. You can have so much fun with the wider tires, the different gear ratios and the very comfortable geometry. And I definitely love my SPD pedals. Let the roadies laugh and spit - they are just jealous!
I've been pondering for months now which type of bike I should buy as I plan to get in to cycling as a hobby. Thank you for helping me decide :) I'll get myself one Cyclo-Cross bike after the Covid19 lockdown. Cool video! :)
Hello, guys. I have a question. Can i use Cube SL road race 2016, with CX comp tyres as a CX bike? Of course it isnt CX but can i get something closer? Thanks
I recently went from e-bike to a ”regular” bike because I noticed I’m in good enough shape to ride it. It’s faster, lighter and I get more workout on my commute. I have something they market as ”hybrid” bike with straight handle bars and narrow tires. CX would be more comfortable and maybe I switch to that some day, looks very good all-arounder in the video. Passing the lorry was my favorite part of the video ;-)
Man i love your videos, yesterday i bought myself a Cube Cross Race Pro, and its simply my dream-bicycle, Cyclocross is my favourite, just because they are, just like Gravelbikes, an Allrounder, let it be a daily drive to work or a tour on the weekend!
I am strongly considering adding a Cyclocross Bike to my arsenal. Would mainly be used for long distance on paved roads and occasional gravel road riding. Thanks for this upload.
Probably you just got a lot of power, but hell, it's true - I experience the same, and I just sold my old road bike XD My crosser is just right for pretty much any kind of road or trail. It's fast and the most fun bike I ever had
Most of the time I am commuter so it's just fresh clothes in the morning and dirty clothes in the evening ...and some food ...and some tools ...and a pump ...and spare lights ...and tubeless repair kit ...and a spare tube ...and my mobile ...and my keys ...and my purse ...and a rainjacket ...etc. :-)
Thanks for uploading this, fellow former racer! (With me, that was quite a long time ago.) Would you consider the CX bike suitable for bike camping/touring?
Surely the steering and geometry can't be too bad, if you are able to ride off-road with no problems. No mounts can be overcome - unless it's carbon, of course.
I have a CX bike and trekking bike. Whenever I have to transport lots of stuff (like camping) I would prefer the trekking bike. But if you just go out for the ride, the CX bike is much more fun of course!
I’m primarily an mtb’er but I had a high end carbon road bike that I sold for an aluminum cx Bike. I put some slicker tires and now I have fully capable road bike/cx Bike that can handle any road surface. I too am a former racer (now hobbyist) and for me I gained more versatility than I lost in speed by getting a cx Bike. Works for me.
You've almost got me convinced to do likewise, Rolando. I'd like to get into some bike touring and my very light full-carbon frame and forks are definitely not built for that. Do you do any bike touring on the CX at all?
Charlie Cassowary. Hey Charlie, I’ve never done any touring although I’m sure it’s possible. The one thing about cx bikes that has taken some getting used to is the high bottom bracket (compared to a road bike). I don’t know much about touring bikes and if their geometry is significantly different to that of road bikes and cx bikes but in the spirit of this video I’m sure a cx Bike could make a nice touring bike. Velofil is pretty responsive to questions, he’ll likely give you some great insight into this if you ask him.
Nice just ordered a Cube nu road pro. Should get it in 4 days and counting CANT WAIT. I want the fun you are having here. I already smash most roadies on my current hybrid :)
@@Velofil Thanks mate. Switched from road to cc and still working out the details, so apeed can remain almost the same, with more fun :) that is why I was asking. It is not easy for the 190cm and 90+ kilos.
I got a CX bike because of your vids @velofil lol. The part you say cx tyres roll so good. I was thinking of switching my 35mm racing ralph to a panaracer gravelking 32mm to nake myself faster. Will that be a good or bad idea?
Nice to hear that, I should work in the Ad business ;-) Racing ralphs are really good but IMO the new Schwalbe G-One Tubeless ist even better in terms of rolling resistance. I don't know how the panaracer performs, sorry.
Thanks for this video. Wondering if you or anyone on this thread could help me. I’m considering buying a Merida Cyclocross 6,000 (2018) which I can get for a really good price. Very hard to find a decent review of them anywhere. What is people’s opinion? I won’t be racing it, looking for a decent bike that I can use on road but more so on gravel type routes. Many thanks for anyone’s thoughts.
Great video...I ride Focus Mares Fores 1..absolute cyclo machine....and does anyone reckon Cyclos are also way cheaper than road bikes? Not sure why though?
I think you have a very good condition, the bike doesn't mean how good you are, I also often outpass road cyclists with my mountain bike (14kg without the 2x1L water bottles and some equipment). :) What model of cyclocross do you ride with and what tires are on ?
If you are just a hobby rider, I wouldn't do it in your case. I don't think your ride will become more fun if you gain 1 or 2 km/h of speed, or will it? But if you are up for racing that is another story of course...
I ride a CX bike on the road. The major disadvantage is that you get used to pedaling through corners, which you can't do on a road bike. So the day I switch back might be dangerous.
i've bought my Merida Cyclocross 500 and it's awsome. I'm proud od my Author Aura but sińce i have CX bike i almost always pick it for my outdoor training
I will say that I believe road bikes are faster for the same amount of effort due to less rolling resistance. That being said, for my type of riding, I prefer my gravel bike. I'm not going to worry if I hit a small patch of rocks or gravel vs road tires. And that all being said, if I'm really worried about it, I can always throw road tires on my gravel bike. But I never do. Edit: yes, I know CX and gravel bikes different slightly, but they're very similar.
Thaks a lot! At 1100€ it's hard to find a CX bike which is fun to ride. Maybe a used one... If you spend 400€ more the big names like MERIDA FOCUS CUBE CANYON etc. offersome nice CX Bikes. Or try wiggle they often have big sales
I bought SCOTT Speedster Gravel CX 20 Disc, it costs approx 1000 euros. But don't forget about pedals, shoes and adjusting a bike to fit to your body. I also bought a special saddle for women.
You are amazing. I wish my bicycle skills progress like that. Love it. I have, hybride and I really want bike, like this crosscycle I just put bod on one but guy wants way too much money
Cyclo-cross and gravel bikes are versatile! I'm looking to get one myself! However these tests are far from scientific, as it depends on how much power your outputting Vs the other riders. I currently own a 30 years old MTB that I rescued from scrap. It's a piece of shit with failing breaks but I still managed to hit 45 kph on it when I really want to reach its top speed (which is mostly limited by it's gear ratio 40Tx13T). And E-Bikes are limited to 25KPH in Europe, so ofc you'd beat them. But the uphill thing is impressive (provided you weren't giving insane amounts of power for the sake of this video ;p) Edit: ok so should have finished the video first, you do mention you're not a racer and just a hobby cyclist,. So that makes the heart rate monitor a better indication for us! Thanks! That bike seems really impressive! Welches Rad ist es? Woher hast du es gekauft? Ich suche demnächst ein "billiges" CX oder gravel Rad. (I assumed you're German cause of the virtual dashboard you had ;p)
Thanks! Very close, I'm from Switzerland :-) I ride a REWEL CCR Titanium with Ultegra groupset and a cheaper version with Aluminium Frame. BTW the speed of E-Bikes in Switzerland is limited to 45kph not 25kph. Maybe you have noticed that they have a yellow number plate because they are classified as scooters here. (Max Power is limited to 1000W.) Those without number plate are limited to max 500W.
I love my CX bike, but, but whether it is as good as mtb on the trails or not depends a lot on the trails. CX bike can go faster on smooth hard packed trails. you must compare with a powermeter, yourself on the roadike and yourself on the cyclocross bike. I can imagine the extra versatility might count for more on average, but surely the road bike will win on the terrain it's designed for
the keyword being "I don't race *anymore*" :D
I'm an old geezer, my last serious race was in the year 2002 ;-)
So I was right! :D
Awesome video and awesome bikes but the person on the bike is a massive factor. I’m pretty sure this is a compliment
SanskritFritz No more Olympics but I race Bikes and as a hobby
You are fast. It is not about your bike, it is about you :)
I agree.
totally agree. This guy could probably ride a MTB and be fast. Obviously in helluva good shape. nice job
yah this is a slightly flawed experiment. I think you would be even faster on the road on a road bike.
I agree but cyclocross bikes are still very versatile.

You seem to be in good shape. That must count for something.
It's a cyclist that is fast not a bike. Bikes don't ride themselves. I'd choose cx over road bike anyway.
CX POWAAAAAA !!!! (Loved this video, as usual)
PS. It's the rider not the bike, I have seen fat bikes and MTB pass road bikes with a strong rider on them. 😊
Fatbike passing strong roadie? Thats the good one lol. Its the same when ive passed my Lada in back 90`s a Porsche once hahaha.
Yeah, that "supercharged turoobocharged" rotary in the lada really hauls ass.
I saw a LS swapped one though
Yes, I also passed a Ferrari on a Dyane back in the days.
Fatbikes are surprisingly nippy.
All of you have forgotten that a fat bike isn't ideal for long distances.

Or 250mph to keep up with e-motorcycle.

Recently bought one. Absolutely satisfied with it. Hitting up the siwss roads and trails the same way as you apparently are ;)

Do you recommend the Ridley cx a 60 for cyclocross and road .?please let me know what do you think . Thanks
Ridley has a good reputation in the CX comunity, I couldn't find the model "a 60"? Just make sure that it has hydraulic disc brakes
