Except from BALANCHINE’S PROTÉGÉ: JOHN CLIFFORD

“I first met Amiruddin two years ago when he came to LA to study with me for a few weeks after graduating from the school of the Royal Ballet. He wanted to get some Balanchine attack and speed to broaden his training. Since then we’ve worked on several short films he’s developed, including a documentary he wanted to do on me. This little excerpt from my Oberon in my A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM was originally choreographed for young students at the Portland Ballet. I didn’t change one step for Amir but you can see how challenging it must have been for the young male teenagers. In the documentary are excerpts from several of my ballets, both modern and classical, and a class section with him and Gianna Bragger (a girl not trained in Balanchine technique) where I go over some typical Balanchine corrections. There’s also a brief interview with me.
