John Clifford on why I left the NYC Ballet when I did at age 27.

  • In my quest to become the next director of the NYC Ballet, a post Balanchine had told me he was training me for in my early 20's, (but instead I formed my own company in Los Angeles)...I give the reasons here. I've posted answers to many questions I've received since I started this social media experiment...which I hope I don't regret...on my Facebook page, johnny26 and my Instagram account...john_cliff26. I'm sorry my face is too close to the camera here. You can even see where I cut my chin shaving...but these are all on the fly, so please forgive me.

May I add, John, that you were an excellent dancer, too! And now, a great teacher.

That was amazing. Thank you , I have just watched an older video about Balanchine and I believe some of your dancing was featured . We all make the best decisions we can at the time we make them .... And therefore they are the right decisions. Ilearnedcthat from my father who recently passed. Being on the west gave more opportunity to young dancers in understanding excellence ... That was a great contribution

Thank you for your candor and founded the LA Ballet Co. I love to see or hear dancer's that danced for Balanchine and their history as well. I watch LAB every year and I enjoy it so much. Especially when they do Balanchine's ballets. I love that Colleen Neary is continuing the Balanchine trust. Someday I would love to go to New York and watch NYC Ballet. Awesome!

Fascinating. I always get the feeling that he could see people's future. Pat Neary said that he had her teach company class at age eighteen! How exciting it must have been to be dancing and choreographing with the best of the best! You seem like you have the personality of a leader, and I admire you for taking the chance.

Thank you! I really enjoyed your narrative on what happened & what was going on at the time. I saw LA Ballet in 1979 when I was visiting my sister. I wish I still had the program. I just remember the company doing a Gershwin piece. I think Johnna Kirkland was dancing with you then.

So what's next for you in 2021? Are there any other opportunities that you are targeting? (Artistic Director, College Professor, starting a new company, continuing to stage Balanchine ballets, writing?)

Sima Raft Not really. At least we did good work for 10 yrs and brought a lot of good dancers and Balanchine ballets. Not a total waste of time.

Definitely not a waste of your time and talent, only no real commitment to dance and not very good faith on the part of the moneyed community. You needed a west coast Kirstein!

This topic about leaving Balanchine reminds me so much of Marie Jeanne and to a lesser extent, Mary Ellen Moylan. In Balanchine Ballerinas Marie Jeanne describes how much she regretted leaving Balanchine. Same thing Mary Ellen Moylan. I can understand why anyone would have regret in leaving Balanchine. And there were others who left Balanchine and had regrets. Sometimes in the moments of living people dont always have the range and wide perspective so different choices can just happen. Those are hard things.
But how great it was that you experienced Balanchine and that he liked you so much. And you are such an accomplished human being. You have created so much in your life and I know you will continue to do so into the future. You really are a person who has manifested your many abilities and talents. That is a very, very, very wonderful thing.

Thanks for sharing that with us John. You were so lucky to have learned at the master's feet and to have been given such great opportunities to grow that I think as you say, he might have been able to still use your talents but he would never have stood in your way since you were sort of following his path anyway, going off on your own to start a company from scratch. Very successfully too.
