How Were Easter Island's Gigantic Statues Actually Carved?

- Thousands of massive stone monuments, known as Moai, preside over Easter Island. The way they were carved, using only stone tools, seems unfathomable.

I love the one guy jumping on top and yelling at them to keep moving it. I feel that was me in my past life.
I call that "Moral Support"
No way. I feel like u the one who brought them water cos u was limp and useless...
That guy on top of the stone was a jackwad
For those wondering, the “final piece” are the pupils in their eyes.
I thought they didn't do that and left the eyes at sharp angles to provide a better place for the ropes and then "walked" the statues to the final place where they finished the statue
The pupils are the most terrifying part of the moai statues
🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
I think after they completed the carving part they did put the pupils in and the moai just walked to the alter all by its self... 🤣

Imagine their faces when they put the last statue and expecting something majestic to happen
They were invoking the 🗿god

That’s sounds exactly like someone saying “imagine their faces when they built the last high rise in Manhattan and expecting something to happen”.
wally wallington should be mentioned
'Meet Wally Wallington, a retired construction worker in Michigan. He's building a Stonehenge replica in his back yard, and he's using only levers and fulcrums. His equipment consists of sticks and stones. No wheels, no cranes, no pulleys, no metal or machinery.'
and
'Wally can also move a one-ton block 300 feet an hour'
now get your boyfriend wally wopper to carve it.
What was the final piece? WHAT WAS THE FINAL PIECE?!! YOU TEASE!!
Eyes of shell. They also received a topknot of lighter red stone.
A rock
🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
I believe that they did this because they believed in something, and this was a way of expresing that belief in perpetuity and that just goes to show you how powerful a belief is. Just like the water of the seas or the wind of the air they chip away and carve our world and it's possibilities.
Or maybe they were just borrd
mathew idicula Yes, they carved the statues because the Rapa Nui thought it would give them 'Mana', which means fertility, wisdom and good luck
It’s a waste of time though.
@@Chlrintruc Do you also think the Great Pyramids were a waste of time?
I like turtles
He said "🗿"
They literally walked the statues.
Exactly. If they were dragged on back or front, the "fallen" ones would not have broken. They walked, the ppl did it with ropes and skill. they rocked and rotated.
Probably, if it all worked out, good harvests and if they let it fall along the way, not a good sign.
So how did they walk them in those steep hills. Always a mystery.
@@pattywickson9046 it works like a Rachet lever
@@pattywickson9046 , the statues were slid down the slope from the quarry, then slid into a trench to stand them vertically. The back was carved so as to give the statue a "lean forward" distribution of mass. Folks then removed the trench barrier and started "walking" the staue out onto well-prepared roads rocking the staue forward with the pulling of ropes. The roads were maintained such that the road did not slope too much uphill or downhill. Once the statue reached a stone platform, the statue would be recarved to enable it to remain standing.
Can we pls stop underestimating our ancestors

The "expert" doesn't realise the rest of them are buried underneath and she's just seeing the head and neck? Cool cool
it's a pity that after all this hardwork no one remembered how they did it
Sad
Looks like petrified wood to me.

If the sculpture and the hammer are as hard, just as much dust will come off the hammer as the sculpture. Worst efficiency if you don't have a chisel.
Guess they should have just gone down to Home Depot?
Use softer stone for the statue, and harder stone for the chisel.
Dang those people are determined, i dont think people nowadays could do that stuff , thats creative

Why does everything need to relate to aliens 🧐🧐😤😤😶😶😶
The answer is simple. The Moai simply came into existence one day. There is really nothing more to it 🗿
so no aliens? :(

Yo Angelo 🗿
SO MANY MOAI😳
You know, or Aliens.
those were some badass chisels...
The real reason is that they were carved with volcanic ash. All they had to do was mold it on spot.
I guess the rope for pulling the statue was brought from America. Rope spinning and rope beating are not the same technique.
early human are very superstitious those statue were made to intimidate island intruders, perhaps more invasion of land was taking place in the nearby island , those heads from distance will looks like a Giants, witnesses or Mairtes will spread sighting
WHAT WAS THE FINAL PIECE?!
A hat
Yes, "a hat". It would have been nice if NatGeo didn't leave its viewers hanging...yet again. Like so many times before.
Tflexxx02 haha true

The narrator sounds like the "notice me Senpai" guy
But why was it done?
Because they had a lot of free time.

WOW!!!!!
They were always scary to me
How is it possible ? What makes them scary to you ?
I bet they were built for scaring someone off
Coolest prof's name.. "Casanova"..
Wrong. It's already been shown that the statues were "walked" to the coast.
Did they prove it or was it just a plausible explanation?
Seems like an inefficient and dangerous way of transporting it with the centre of gravity so high up especially with the terrain so rough.
@@bananian actually, someone did, not a single person, a scientist and many people get a MOAI to "walk", rapa nui tadicon say the "walk" with "Mana"
@@rapanui_youtuber5758
Yeah but they did it on flat grassy ground.
And that just means it's plausible, not necessarily prove that they did it that way.
@@bananian yes, there is why exist "TE ARA O TE MOAI" it's a kind of path were they use to move the MOAI around the island, a don't know how to explain, my inglish it's limeted, but maybe you can find some information about this on internet, sorry if a don't write well. Have a nice day.

Most imp question is that why they made?
It's got 'Smithsonian' written on it, That's how you know they're lying.

Watching the program on Science Channel. Couldn't help but wonder why this same Voiceover guy pronounced Maui differently than everyone else. Why?.Does it mean all the experts messed it up and he fixed it? So wouldn't "THE SCIENCE/DISCOVERY Channels want to make sure? They were carved from wood. Now petrified and solidified from being buried.
Guys,,, cmon. They are cast concrete

That theory is so wrong they walked the statues didn't drag them
Stone tools only to mine this Wealthy God?
we all need magnetite tools to mine that god

why we underestimate our ancestors 🤦🏼♂️. this demo is good but it's not an ideal technique if thousand of these are transported and carved 😒 sigh.
A reminnder of the third race. The lemurians who hinabitated the pacific continent of mu on the pacificthe statues were their resemblance
🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
They got clapped them the invaders burned and hid the technology they used to carve
I don't believe the statues were CARVED with stone tools. At 4:01, we saw cement underneath a statue. I believe the cement was produced by pounding volcanic-ash stones into powder (pounding with the same stones used by those demonstrators pounding on the statues as shown in the video). Then the powder from the volcanic-ash stones was transported to distant sites to be mixed with seawater to have concrete. Then the concrete was moulded into statues at different locations. The statues, as soon as they were moulded, they had never been transported to another location.
But they aren't made from concrete, they're made from volcanic stone.
They were not made from any stone.
Really? Statue deniers?
@@hermitage6439 : The title sentence "The way they were carved, using only stone tools, seems unfathomable." encourages us to find solutions. My solution is pretty reasonable because I saw cement. (My old username was changed to Leg Pol.). What is your solution?
Reminder, reconstructions and restoration jobs exist. It's likely the concrete was just put there to ensure the statue was stable.
