  • Thousands of massive stone monuments, known as Moai, preside over Easter Island. The way they were carved, using only stone tools, seems unfathomable.

I thought they didn't do that and left the eyes at sharp angles to provide a better place for the ropes and then "walked" the statues to the final place where they finished the statue

I believe that they did this because they believed in something, and this was a way of expresing that belief in perpetuity and that just goes to show you how powerful a belief is. Just like the water of the seas or the wind of the air they chip away and carve our world and it's possibilities.

Probably, if it all worked out, good harvests and if they let it fall along the way, not a good sign.

@@pattywickson9046 , the statues were slid down the slope from the quarry, then slid into a trench to stand them vertically. The back was carved so as to give the statue a "lean forward" distribution of mass. Folks then removed the trench barrier and started "walking" the staue out onto well-prepared roads rocking the staue forward with the pulling of ropes. The roads were maintained such that the road did not slope too much uphill or downhill. Once the statue reached a stone platform, the statue would be recarved to enable it to remain standing.

I don't believe the statues were CARVED with stone tools. At 4:01, we saw cement underneath a statue. I believe the cement was produced by pounding volcanic-ash stones into powder (pounding with the same stones used by those demonstrators pounding on the statues as shown in the video). Then the powder from the volcanic-ash stones was transported to distant sites to be mixed with seawater to have concrete. Then the concrete was moulded into statues at different locations. The statues, as soon as they were moulded, they had never been transported to another location.
