Learn cello online with Hello Cello!! In this video, I'll talk about the #1 cause of a squeaky, nasal sound that drives people crazy when they're first learning a string instrument.
I'm demonstrating on a cello, but this idea works exactly the same way on bass, violin, and viola.
This video is from my brand new online course, Cello 101: Bootcamp for Beginners. Check it out on Udemy:

Thanks for watching and happy practicing!
I've been playing cello for about 30 years now, and this is the first time anyone's mentioned bow geometry. This was such an elegant and effective way to get this concept across.
That's so cool to hear! Bow angle makes a huge difference in sound production, and can actually make everything easier to play :)
Мне это объяснил мой учитель на первом же уроке. 58 лет назад
Hi Claire, Congratulations for this very clear and well expained first tutorial ! It's, as expected, of very high quality. It makes perfect sense why it sounds so different, the demonstration is on point. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words!! I am always inspired by your clear video explanations :) glad you enjoyed.
@@claireallencello Always such a big pleasure 💕
4:24 - 4:28 This technique solved a whole host of problems. Many thanks.
that's amazing! and it's also my goal, so I'm so glad to hear it.
Mind blowing stuff 🤯🤯🤯 right there

This video is so excellent! I'm dissapointed that you didn't do more tutorial videos.
I'm working on making more! this whole course is available on udemy at the link in my bio as well :) my goal this year is to launch a subscription model website with a ton of practice videos and guides!!
This is the best explanation I have ever heard!
Yay I'm so glad! I'm working on making more teaching videos, in the meantime I hope this helps :)
Who knew geometry could be so important? ;-)
who knew!!
Nice. Straight to the point👍 Been struggling with a-string and those squake and scratchy noises. Gonna try this "angle" next. Thanks!
Thank you! Very clear and concise--and helpful!
Thank you

@@claireallencello I just checked out, very nice iniciative. But I'm something like intermediate, so it's your online class that I'm looking foward. Wish u the best!
Btw, love your hair!
@@saruskaphaneuf oh amazing thank you so much for checking it out! I have cello 201 and 301 coming soon, and individual & group classes also on my website at the link :) haha thanks for the hair compliments, I’m very low maintenance usually but blow dried for these videos lol💁🏼♀️
u r sooooo good!
thank you Shawn!!
I always wonder why when making these videos the person doesn't record their complete cello while they play? After giving the advice she crops off her video above her arm and the bow making contact to the cello. Is she playing or not?
You!
Get gut strings, Eudoxa or Oliv if you want a more modern sound, or pure gut. You’ll never hear a squeak ever again.
Oooh I will have to try them! I've gotten recs about Eudoxa before. Waiting for someone to sponsor me lolol
yeahhh they ain’t cheap… but they are exquisite quality, a joy to just look at. Try just the A for now, it blends fine with all other steel strings. It will sound unwieldy and wild for a few days then relax into a wonderful natural tone, like vintage guitar distortion. Good luck 😊

The video is really interesting! By the way I play the violin it is the same only in the small ... 🙈😏
Welcome!! Thank you for watching & so glad you enjoyed :) haha yes the same only small! How cute
@@claireallencello I would love to hear from you a performance about Betauben ... the piece you hear at the end of this video

it's a very cool piece! They did a special cover / compilation song, but I love Beethoven in general :) @@rudyfine2878
@@claireallencello I also love the original! It's an inspiring piece! I play it on violin or flute ... it sounds interesting!
