- Trooper Hoover inspects the trailer for Tractor Time with Tim! He takes a close look at the hitch, chains, break away system, axles, brakes, frame, ramp storage and more. The trailer is in worse condition that we thought due to salt and other road debris. These are all issues that might be on your trailer!

This Trooper is a great teacher!! I don't wanna be unsafe, and now He shows us what to look for!! Win/Win!
next this cop gonna tell you about health safety to and you gonna jump for joy. Fat cop representing safetey lmao
Brent Hoover is one good enforcement officer, always willing to teach and explain to the driving public so the highways are safer. As I always say in my comments to him “We’re working together, for safety’s sake!”
The Trooper seems like a great guy that is focused on our safety. Thank You Trooper & TTWT.
The D.O.T. officers I've met in my state for commercial inspections are the same way, really laid back. They'd rather explain to you what's going on and why, than give you a ticket. Its like they're more passionate about trucks and trailers than the guys actually driving the trucks and trailers lol.
only on camera
These DOT guys are great to work with!! After driving semi OTR for 26 years solo I have a great respect for these guys. Some drivers hate them. I’ve ALWAYS treated them with respect and courtesy and never received 1 ticket in 26 years. Not that I didn’t give them a reason! They’re just doing their job.
Trooper Hoover, thank you. Your comments are common sense and clearly spoken.
Really nice of trooper Hoover to show what they look for, most roadside troopers aren’t as pleasant as trooper Hoover and god forbid you ask a question
This may be a four year old video but has lots of great info. Thank you Tim & Kristi and Trooper Hoover.
Tim, I hear you about just checking systems before you leave home. I got pulled over a few weeks ago because of a bad tail light. I told the cop I had just purchased new lamps and he laughed out loud until I whipped open the bag with them! That got him to chuckle and let me go...
What a great trooper! This is how all troopers should act. Not afraid of the camera and down to earth. Good on you Trooper Hoover; stay safe Sir!
Edit: misspelled a word.
I use a bungee cord to hold the chains tight under the ball everytime. It keeps everything from dragging but, flexes when the need comes.
Good idea; I'll do that with my trailers (I have three but all different sizes).
Just twist the chain until they don’t reach the ground anymore
I also use a short Bunge, and have for years.
@@TheeAbstractHero Don't do that. It reduces the chain strength up to 70%.
Our Troopers are the best of the best!!!
The trooper is absolutely correct on the emergency brake activation cable. Great catch trooper.
Mine ebrake is attached to my bumper
I knew that when i started towing skidsteers at 16yrs old.
"Great catch"!! Except he didn't mention the fact that the cable was longer than the chains! DUHHHH! You would want the emergency brakes to engage before the emergency chains are tight! "Great Miss" if you ask me....
I dunno. If the main hitch detaches, I’m ready for the e brake to be engaged!!
@@robbiebooth2980 the emergency brake is there in case the safety chains fail after the trailer becomes detached. You don't want the trailer to come unhitched and lock up the brakes while still on the safety chains. That would make a bad situation worse.
Might be good to have a video on the breakaway box and how to repair/replace and correctly connect the cable to the truck. Loving this series -- so much useful information.
This is really great that the Highway Patrol and Police are participating in these informational UA-cam Videos. It give everyone a heads up on what needs to be maintained on Truck and Trailer.
best thing to say "worked during my pre trip"
Proud 2 say Brent has been a friend for years.... good man
Hi Tim,
Glad to see Truck and Trailer Tuesday, you're making the world safer. Here's a small tip to share - we just bought a big dump trailer and for the first time need a 2 5/16 ball. To prevent confusion, I painted the 2 inch hitch bars and hitches fluorescent orange, and the 2 5/16 hitches fluorescent green. If you were to put the bigger hitch on the smaller ball there would be big trouble. Bonus - the hitch is easier to see in the backup camera.
Very informative series, Thank you and Officer Hoover for each of the presentations.
Troops Hoover is a great guy he is looking out people safety just like other trooper all over the country
Thanks Tim and Trooper Hoover, if this video helps to prevent even one accident it well worth all the time and effort you all put into it.
Great job guys. I wish more were so attentive. Pre-tripping your vehicle/equipment takes just a few minutes but can literally be a life saver. Thanks Tim, Christy & Trooper Hoover!
You are110% right! 😊
Big thanks for all the great information Tim and Trooper Hoover...stay safe out there!
logger Wade has had trooper Hoover on he seems like a good guy. alot of inspectors could learn from him, he seems to educate and truly care not just meet ticket quotas
Do you care about how fat and unhealty he is? or does tht not matter. Hes like an unhealthy fat personal trainer teling you how to live safe and health
Happy to see that a twist or two to the safety chains is ok. Informative! Happy towing.
A chain is not designed to take a load while twisted. The chain could fail and snap. Especially with a shock load. Safety chains should be the proper length to begin with. My trailers are designed so the safety chains can be adjusted in length. In a pinch the safety chains can be raised up off the pavement using a rope or bungee cord. Coiled safety cables are another option.
Agree with Shawn, as a farmer we knew a twisted chain will break under a load, I'd use a bungee cord instead.
I was surprised to hear that they allowed the chains to be twisted. It seems like a bungee would be a better option. You never want the chains to be needed because the trailer will go to the right with the crown of the road, pulling the rear of the tow vehicle with it, turning the tow vehicle into oncoming traffic.
Tired old mechanic I use Zip Ties to keep the chains up enough not to drag the pavement.
@@shawnwright2356 Florida does not allow bungee cords to hold anything. AZ, and CA will write a ticket for any twist in a chain. Hello campers, welcome to my world. 38 years over the road, and now I don't even want to tow my camper when I'm not working.
OH! Wait until they start enforcing ELD for private rigs over 10001#. I see a bunch of fifth wheel campers going up for sale real cheap.
This is a good review for experienced and inexperienced alike! It is good to be reminded of those things we may take for granted. Thanks for sharing this!
Education with ISP "AWESOME" Thank you and Thank you Trooper Hoover. Learned a few things. THANK YOU!
I have to appreciate the fact that officer Hoover made a point, several times, to differentiate between commercial operation and private operation and that private operation is not subject to enforcement of regulations. Doesn't mean anybody should be stupid, reckless or irresponsible in their private use of trailers, just that we are not subject to state revenue extortion. Regulations, codes and statutes are for commercial transportation.
Thanks for video Tim . Trooper Hoover, he dose a great job explaining what is and isnt a violation have a great day be safe.
This was a really good video, thank you for posting it. With as many miles as I do on the freeway with my farm trailers, I pretty much treat it like a commercial trailer situation. Rewired my gooseneck because the breakaway was inoperable, the plug was cracked and filled with water, the brakes had been cut because the wiring had been rerun with 18 gauge by the previous owner and had gotten smoked. Pretty ridiculous. Now all the lights work, brakes work again, and all it needs is new lumber and some black touch up paint. Keep up the good content. 👍
One of the better offerings on UA-cam. Extremely well done. Thank you.
Great video!!!!! Last year I flipped my trailer to do maintenance on it .Was surprised to see the salt damage now I guess I will repaint the bottom of the trailer ever 2 years. Love the website 👌
Gotta love ISP nice, and helpful....more troopers should be like these guys
Most would run the hooks on the safety chain hooked from the bottom. Flip the hooks
Great advise. I agree that safety should be the main focus and not on the category of commercial vs non-commercial.
Great video, Tim. An overlooked topic for sure.
Great video I learned a couple of things to change on my trailer. Thanks to the officer for the education.
Great info, certainly take note of his comment, “one or two twists of the chain”. Do not twist the chain enough that it balls up to shorten it. More than what he recommends will reduce the chains strength by 90%!
It’s good practice is to get proper length chains to begin with. I understand that if you tow with multiple vehicles, that may not be an option. If that is the case, put a quick link of appropriate strength to shorten the chain when needed.
Sobriety checkpoint: Can you say "Truck and Trailer Tuesday on Tractor Time with Tim, and Trooper Hoover". Good job!
Even if I were sober, I doubt I could say all that without messing it up. Good way to test someone!
Handcuffs. I haven’t even had a beer in 3 months..
I’m not a trucker but even I find your videos interesting.Trooper Hoover does a good job of explaining what to look for.
Thanks for watching!
What a great video! Thanks to Trooper Hoover, Tim and Kristy (sp?) behind the camera.
Excellent series
We took apart my father-in-law's horse trailer brakes last summer to inspect them. It had been sitting parked for most of the summer before out in New Mexico. 3 of the drums looked ok, the 4th one however, when we pulled the drum off, a mouse skeleton fell out. As we dug around in the nest it had made, we found a snake skeleton about 2 foot long coiled up in there as well. That was probably the best/worst thing I've ever found.
Lots of great knowledge. Working on becoming a Commercial Vehicle Officer for the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Thanks for the video and great knowledge from a great officer
Thanks Tim for making these videos. Great information. I really appreciate it.
He might have mentioned it on a previous video. Check to make sure your tires on your trailer are at the proper PSI I have a 10K dump trailer and they are rated for 3350 lbs at 80 PSI. I had 2 tires at 50 PSI and realized it really quick after it was loaded no where near a air compressor replacement tires aren’t cheap. I learned the hard way.
Tim Hoover the only cop I like he's a good guy showing us how to be safer on the road without fineing us
He’s on video, can act like a dick.
It was nice of them to walk you through this
Thanks for the video. Love when the Police help like this. Promotes the protect and serve portion of the job.
Another great video, thanks Tim! And Thanks to Trooper Hoover for sharing all this great knowledge. One thing though, lets talk about the strain relief on your trailer wiring. Your wires will last a lot longer if you get that outer jacket into the strain relief clamp on that plug.
@5:40 you can clearly see a gap between the nut and washer on the ball hitch, I recommend unscrewing the nut to put some heavy duty Lock Tite on the threads and torque to specification.
Yes, and it has been commented on repeatedly, and fixed the same day as this was filmed.
One of the best videos you've done. Thank you!!!
I've added an eye-bolt just below by rego/license plate for my emergency breakaway brakes - keeps it clear and independent of the towing hitch :)
I do the same thing just in case the tow hitch breaks my to hitch is below my bumper so my safety chain hooks to my bumper even my electric break cable is on the bumper
So, when it rains it pours? Something good comes out of this. I, fortunately, don't do this work anymore, but when I did, there were nightmares. Another great video. 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Thank you for the chain knowledge. Always heard the opposite.
Good series of educational videos. It was nice of Trooper Hoover to take time to work with you guys on this series. Stay safe.
Very nice for IN State Police for helping do these great information. Officer Hoover can explain things in plain English. Great job and he needs to be in front of the camera more too...
Great video, thank for taking the time to make it.
Thanks for watching!
this officer is very reasonable and very knowledgable work with people it is for your own good learn something from them
For added trailer hitch safety for whatever you're pulling check out iron Jaws trailer hitch safety
Didn't expect the video to be as useful information. Great video.
I am glad that he pointed out the cable I put mine on the frame or the bumper so if you would have a total failure of your hitch the brakes would still be activated on the trailer
A helpful couple of things for you to do. You can get a "D" ring like climbers use that has a flip lock and you can use the safety chain slot to attach it to the truck. Another thing that helps guard the wire is even if you have that style hitch you can open safety pin loop and slide the wire in the safety loop on the safety pin. That will keep your trailer wire from ever touching the ground and you won't have to worry about it being to short for turns because it's right over the tongue. A few little tricks from delivering trailers and rv's that I learned along the way.
Thank you Trooper!!!
At 6:33 you can see a gap between the hitch ball nut and lock washer that goes all the way into the shank of the hitch ball. It's not correctly torqued. specs can be found on hitch ball mfgr website and it varies by shank diameter. I tow a 30' travel trailer and at rallies I have used a Dollar bill and see if I can slip it in between the nut and lock washer. It's a quick easy check but agreed it does not indicate fully torqued only that enough torque was used to compress the lock washer.
Very good presentation Trooper Hoover.
Nice video. I am surprised the the officer did not mention the length of the breakaway kit cable. It looks very long and usually should be slightly shorter than the chains on order to prevent the trailer coupler and jack from running into the back of the truck if it comes loose from the hitch ball. It should apply the brakes even if the chains are still connected to the truck. I also noted he did not mention weather or not all axles should have brakes - many states Arkansas, Iowa) require all four on tandem over 3000. When I haul my tractor and implements, the combined weight is about 12k and it makes me glad about things actually working. On another note - I have had several trailers with break away batteries. If they sit for several months - become discharged - then winter sets in and they freeze - bad battery. I have hauled with the same dead battery many years and been lucky. When I started hauling heavier (my tractor), I decided to find a solution to always having a dead battery. I invested in a solar controller and a50 watt solar panel connected to the trailer bus (connection box) to keep the battery charged. That also permitted me to attach a GPS tracker when I was away to help if the trailer took a trip without my knowledge. Enjoyed the video, Great subject. I heard another video remind me that safety measures are not all that important when everything is good. But when things do not go right and the Highway Patrol shows up, axle weight, trailer weight, combined gross weight, and truck payload weight seem to draw a lot of attention - sometimes when tickets are written, Insurance may choose not to pay. Best Wishes, Larry
Length is a matter of opinion. I have mine setup so it only engages in the event the chains breakaway. If the trailer is still attached by the chains it is not “broken away” and is still attached to the truck. So when you stop the brake controller will apply the brakes so the trailer will not hit the back of the truck. Last thing I want is a trailer yanking on the back of a truck still attached with no control of the brakes!
And I also attach the cable independent of the hitch. Either to the bumper or the frame. This is just on the off chance the hitch separates from the vehicle. Anything beyond that there are bigger problems that obviously can’t be controlled.
@@dodgeguyz I think you are right. There is nothing there that I can disagree with. I may go back to extending the cable longer. I guess the key to that is connecting the cable independent of the hitch assembly. And you are right, if the chains are still attached, you will have brake control from the truck (which I like much better). Thanks, best wishes, Larry
Excellent video, great information.
I certainly appreciate all of your videos Tim.
Took delivery of a 1025R today, your UA-cam channel was a deciding factor in which machine I purchased.
Thank You!
Congratulations, Tim! I’m sure you will love it!
Great video Tim trooper Hoover dose a great job with the education side of enforcement he has also don videos with logger Wade he dose a great job explaining what is and isnt a violation have a great day be safe.
...does .......done.
Be sure to tighten the ball too. Great Video and thanks for the info.
I don't own a trailer....I don't haul for a living...I don't even have a vehicle with a hitch...yet I was THOUROUGHLY invested in this video. haha
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Tim this was good information and is appreciated and thank Trooper Hoover
BEST / easiest electric brake cord is the RED stretchy type sold at most trailer stores , i have a extra stainless steel spring snap link specifically for that , hooked to truck hitch frame , separate from chain hooks as he said , THE new super duty trailer hitch frame is so thick , i bought two extra D-ring shackles , be safe
P]]
This needs to be taught to our teens before they get a permit and they need this knowledge far before they get a driver's license.
80% of them will never use it
Or you can reach your own kids duh
I had the same type of break away on my trailer when I bought it. Took it in to. I replaced it with one that had a Bungie type cord. A lot better the. The stock setup and it give it a better hookup and it like a spring coil type of Bungee. Love it.
Thank you as always for the educational videos, stay safe out there Trooper
Brother thank you for the video, as county mountie in texas. I appreciate it, I see daily dangerous trailers failure to secure loads. My best partners mother was killed when unsecured load fell on her car killing her. I take it very serious, and I wish to impress upon pick up owners secure your cargo, it takes a few minutes, but can save you a lot money and anguish.
Excellent video with good information. Thanks for sharing!
Ive heard you cant twist the chaun like that because it kinks the chain. With a large enough weight it can break the chains from over tightening it in a weird spot.
officer Hoover is a great source of knowledge ,thanks Tim
Great series of videos Tim. Very helpful. 👍🏻
Kinda good video, more people who tow trailers need this
What happens when you pull hard on a twisted chain. It deforms and could break. Strange they say its ok to twist.
Never twist! I was looking for this to be pointed out.
After you replace your Brake Away Battery and Box, you need to pull the plunger on the Brake Away Switch and make sure all four service brakes lock up. During a Level 1 safety check you will have to prove the brakes lock when the plunger is pulled.
it should be don ever year.
@@davidj.kester7979 100% correct, it's part of the FMCSA inspection.
Thanksfor this great educational video 👍👍👍👍👏👏
When I saw the rust I was going to ask if that trailer was one you were borrowing because I remembered that yours was not very old. Then when you said it was YOUR trailer I was like "Wow!". The rust on the frame and the corrosion around the hitch was surprising. I live in the snow belt also and my landscape trailer is around 8 years old and it has nowhere near that amount of rust.
Get a locking hitch pin, I learned that the hard way, backed up and was stepping out to hook up trailer to nothing. Great info Tim.
or just move.
every time I connect to one of my utility trailers I inspect all safety items plus lights on the trailer and the truck, tire condition on all tires including the spare and tire pressure. I check the brakes as soon I start to move the trailer. The wire that goes into the 7 way pin connector on Tim's trailer could be sealed with clear silicone caulk to prevent further damage and seal out water.
Coming from owning a commercial heavy haul company it’s nice seeing officers like you had in your video. Some are reluctant to answer questions and he sounded like he knew his stuff. They were so bad over here for a while the head guys had us help train some of there guys on equipment hauling safety years ago.
My bumper has a hole for a ball, i run the cable through there and hook it to itself. It's long enough it doesn't engage in turns and short enough it'll pull before the chains catch the trailer.
If I need to shorten up the chains a little, so they aren’t rubbing the ground, can I possibly feed them through the attachment point (if the hooks fit) and back onto themselves? I saw someone do that when hooking up their U-Haul trailer.
Make sure that ball is tight I had a friend that had one come off
You know officer Hoover is a good guy if he has a Dachshund!!
Hey tim I just take eye bolts and install on all my trucks so the electric break away cable is completely separate with a snap clip
Breakaway should be connected to the truck frame. Hitch bolts have been known to fail and breakaway cable goes with the hitch, not applying the emergency brakes. There is a UA-cam video showing that situation with a travel trailer.
No looking at the bolts that hold the hitch on the frame?
Always weld the hitch to the frame. Bolt on hitches suck big time
What about the trailers with safety cables and not chains? If you cross them they bind up and rub on the hitch shank.
I am very surprised the trooper did not look closely at the hitch bolted to the pickup frame. I pull a small utility trailer (3,000 GVW) with equipment on a daily basis. After 12 years, my receiver tub broke from the U-frame of the hitch - RUST! The lack of integrity of the hitch was missed by me, and the entire hitch needed replacing. All those other safety features may be in place, but if the hitch to the pickup fails, all is lost (safety chains do no good, they are hooked to the hitch frame). I have an F250. Getting the old bolts out proved to be a major project, far greater than mounting a new hitch. Just a heads-up. Thanks for the video.
I dealt with those rusty bolts when replacing a bumper once. No fun at all!
Always do your pre trip on truck and trailer before leaving
Another great episode, I bought a dump trailer today and this is right on time for me.
On your list at the end Also have to torque down that trailer ball
Salt definitely kills trailers. I’m fortunate I don’t have to take any of mine out in the winter. I’ve seen what it does. In Indiana do you have to register your trailer as commercial? In CT we have two options for trailers: camp trailer plate or commercial. Obviously the camp trailer plate can not be on anything you’re making money with, but our commercial ones need a federal annual inspection yearly with dated sicker. Do you need that there?
No, we do not need inspection here in Indiana. Remember, we have ‘much less government’ here than you have!
Tractor Time with Tim you are definitely right with that!!! I’m thankful that you took the time to see my photos. Thank you, it means a lot.
There seems to be more than 2 options for trailer registration. www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=802&Q=244546&PM=1#trlcom
Don't forget to tighten the ball nut another 1/2 turn to close up the lock washer.
Smokey the Bear 🐻🐻❄️ N Super Trooper Hoover Hang out Together for Sure... awesome duo...
Thanks for the eye opening legalities.
