www.driveyoursu... Video explains both the SWOT analysis and TOWS analysis in strategic planning
This video explained what I needed to know in 3 minutes than my MBA class did in 3 hours, Thanks Ian
I just skip long, boring lectures and learn from UA-cam in my own time lol
If your MBA class didn't give you a theoretical construct to consider the dimensions of the business environment, but you have to rely on cute and restrictive kiddies acronyms, then you were not MBA material in the first place.
Thank you Anuraag. The TOWS analysis I showed was an example one. In that example, strengths and weaknesses are internal to your company, while the opportunities and threats are external. The idea is to link specific strengths to capitalize on opportunities and specific strenghts to mitigate threats. They don't have to be the same strengths - they can be different. I attached a link to an article in the video description that explains the entire process.
After watching this video, it definitely explains a good way to honestly evaluate your company. This is worth watching. Thank you Ian
Marcia, Thank you very much for your feedback. It's always nice to hear. Take care

thank you Ian for this wonderful TOWS analysis. I used to depend on SOWT analysis as a tool for situational analysis in marketing and promotion. Now, the TOWS analysis is more deeper and more comprehensive. Thanks again and I think we need more videos about strategic planning from your side. you are very good at it.
Thank you very much Ian for the clarity on the two TOWS and SWOT,very helpful indeed.

Thank you for this vdo. Appreciate the details.. Since I am part of Supply Chain Org, we use SWOT for new supplier selection.. I came across the TOWS for the first time.. I am wondering how could I apply the essence of TOWS into the supplier selection.. I mean what should be on the top (as you mentioned "Internal" & "External/Market")...
WOW, thank you so much for this video.. so simply explained
You're welcme
Very good presentation
Thank You Woody!
A bit surprise when these clips were made 7 years ago. I hope you have time to share with us more about these topics. An update or case study, ect.
Ian, thank you for explanation the TOWS tool in a very easy and clear way. Could you please answer is it always has to be connected in this way: S1 to O1, S1 to T1, O1 to W1, T1 to W1? Or it could be let's say S1 to O3, S2 to T1 etc? I think it depends on my SWOT list I made in a strategy or marketing plan.
You can use an app that connects these feature for you: cayenneapps.com/swot-analysis
Thank you Mr. Johnson. Can you give a hypothetical example of the swot analysis of any organization and a company?
Yes, I can. Here are a couple of links from www.driveyoursuccess.com

Thank you so much, sir. This video is very useful.
My favorite point', TOWS..
Easy to understand
Thank you
Thanks a lot, mate. It helped me so much.
+John Constantine My pleasure John. Stay in touch. Ian
Hello, Thanks for the efforts. these videos are really usfull. I have a question that is confusing me, and here it goes, apologize it is a little bit long but it's killing me.I work in a department, and the board members use and responsible for the Strategic Planning process were they use the SWOT tool for environmental analysis and then, the board members asks us in a group meeting to do the SWOT analysis for our department weakness, strengthes... ect.... now after we finish the SWOT, the board members identify gaps and create organizational strategic objectives and then they create the strategy map for the company and then cascade the identifed strategic objective to our department and inform us that we have to achieve this strategic objectives. Now, my question is, since we have already used the SWOT in the beginning, what do we need to do (as a department) or what kind of tool do we use to identify how to achieve the strategic objectives that the board members have identified from our SWOT analysis, do we use the SWOT again? thanks
That's well explained Ian. Thanks for the prez. Presumably you can use those links then to determine the items on your Balanced Business Scorecard and track the effectiveness of the strategy?
Absolutely
amazing. thank you so much.
WOW! That was wonderful! THANKS!
this helped me out alot, thank you!
Great effort. Thank you very much.
Thank you. Let me know if you need anything.
Hi Ian, I have a book that told me using the points from swot analysis and add the weight and rate for those points (this way was taken from Wheelen and Hunger). And you can use those points into the TOWS analysis...do you think the weight and rating table is useful?according to your video...
great video. thank you for uploading
Great video. Thank you so much. Just subscribed.
Great, thank you! So simple way of explaining
How do you pull all the TOWS ideas together into a simple strategic statement and just 3 or 4 strategic pillars.. rather than say a dozen? This is the tricky part where I'm at currently. :)
Check this out ua-cam.com/video/P24rn6rYTfc/v-deo.html
Great idea
great explanation, thank you so much!!!!
good video great explanation
thanks, that was easy and simple.
Hey Ian would you also recommend a HOSHIN KANRI approach for Planning and Execution - if not why not ?
Thanks
Strategic-Leadership-India - Rohit Dhankar @ strategic-leadership-india.com/ Hmmm, Not familiar with this - I will have to investigate it.
Nicely done!
Thanks Sidney!
Thanks a lot from Germany :)
this was awesome...thanks so much...
Thanks Johnnya - let me know if there is anything you would like me to cover in another video.
The challenge I'm having is in limiting the opportunities to external entries. There are so many *internal* opportunities for improvement and that is all the company is focusing on. Anyone experiencing this?
Thank you ❤️
Thanks Ian.
Can u come up with a more detailed version of it?
Sure - what do you need?
@@Driveyoursuccess A detailed version on TOWS would be good if possible?
thanks and it is easy to understand!
Does this apply to business strategy as well?
+Peter Lantz Hi Peter: Yes, it does. The purpose of the video is to simplify how companies go about using certain strategic planning tools and to always be cognizant of the stumbling blocks. However, strategic planning is never simple or easy.
I do not see any need for a separate TOWS analysis really. Its just a matter of making sure that what you put in your SWOT grid is based on data and evidence not hunch and wishful thinking. I say "just" but it may be quite hard for senior managers to 1. Get the data they need to do a proper SWOT and 2.Be honest with themselves when figuring out what the data tells them. But if the SWOT is based on a proper analysis, you put S and W on one side of the grid and T and O on the other. Surely there is no need to complicate things by calling it TOWS. A SWOT on the fly done round the table for quick brainstorming is probably not much use in the real world as compared to the classroom?
+LearnLoads Sorry - but the TOWS analysis emerged because of the inherent deficiencies of the SWOT. The SWOT is a brainstorming tool - not a tool that lays the groundwork for actionable plans or strategies.
+Ian Johnson Not denying that TOWS is an recognised tool - just that it is one acronym too many!
Agreed! There are way too many. There is SWOT, TOWS, PEST, PESTLE - it's endless and kind of amusing at times. However, I think that TOWS forces people to match their internal strengths to the external issues they need to address. With a SWOT, it's common to finish and then hear someone say "ok, so what's next?". Thanks for the comments - take care.
Awesome!
thank you very much
great vid again, thanks - can you make a video where you explain mission and visions and impact on the company and the costumers?
Hello Rasmus - Yes, that's a video I plan on doing. I've been travelling quite a bit on business and have not added any new videos, but one about mission & vision statements within the overall strategic planning process is a good topic. Take care.
Just awesome!
Thanks Paulo. It's very much appreciated.
still watching in 2023

One request to make hope you won't mind if you can speak little slow and loudly that would help immensely as sometimes understanding dialect if English fs not one's primary language. Thanks a ton, in advance.
