Bridges masterfully built with the technologies of the ages are replaced by yet another steel girder straight and dull as a butter knife. Material poetry is lost.
maintenance nothing, we still have bridges in the countryside that have been standing 160 years that sit just fine without much attention. they are are after all made of stone and there fore do not rust or rot.
Arch has a huge advantage in maintenance. That's why german high speed rail uses a lot of deck arch bridges. They have a huge lifespan. Just keep the water away, close all cracks and they practically last forever.
Replace the old bridge over the rail tracks with sections of the tappan see btidge all sections of t z bridge are only 5 years old built to last 100 years just leave center column and drop the new sections in there place the railings and road way are all done even the lighting is there save the city some money for a change ! No steel needed no concrete needed just set it in place with a bit of cutting !
+Iain Stenhouse If you want to keep his old junk, why don't you come up with the money to do it your way instead. But if you are going to spend my money, you best do things the cheapest way possible. So down it comes & something better goes in it's place. Get used to it! You pay for it done your way, if you can't, then my way is the way it will be!
Cockroach Cockroach which in the long run strong old structures such as this bridge had to come down coz network rail couldn’t be arsed to get the track and ballast machines there and dig it all out and make a long solid concrete bed base to go under the bridge? However way your money would of been spent cr
+SCHRANZ3040 That bridge is in the way of progress & preservation is too costly. There are plenty of others. Network rail did the right thing. At least the taxpayers who support NR got a bargain instead of the ridiculous sum it would have cost to preserve this for a just a handful of "nothing must change" preservationists! It delights my eyes to watch this wonderful video. That is progress! Tough up!
Cockroach Yes but having you said all that did NR remove the red brick bridge behind do you know as seaming you either live near by or just know all about it, as for toughen up sonny Jim I have you know I work for nr on the track tampers and was only asking a question!
Network Rail does exactly that when feasible. Maybe there was an issue with the bridge itself or sewers, cables, water mains underneath the track itself. Many examples of track being lowered here especially in tunnels.
Great Demo Job But a Real shame to see a Proper Stone Bridge with SO MUCH Character get replaced with a SOULESS PIECE O SHIT CONCRETE !!! SO IM PERSONAL !!!!!!!!!!!!! GUTTED
Look at the stonework pure craftsmanship
What's up with the set of tracks in the background under the other bridge that is super curvy
terrible waste of what looked like a great bridge, but needs to be demolished for whatever reason. Well documented 🙂

@ 00:51 is it me or is that track through the right hand arch under the red bridge further up simply the craziest bit of design work ever?
Well, the old cooper river bridge was gone 2007
I'd take demolishing a bridge on Christmas day to the more usual arrangements for that day any time!
+Wylye_guy the only day the trains are not running
So all that hammering and no shot of the arch collapsing? I feel utterly cheated.
It was on Christmas day and I had to take my mum to my sisters for Christmas dinner or my life wouldn't have been worth living if I failed
Sad to see it go.......We just don't build stone arch bridges like this anymore.....
extremely high build/maintenance cost

A "stone arch bridge" with rebar in it? ROFLMAO.
When your "rail infrastructure" is so "critical" you can take days to demolish an overhead "bridge" and clean up the mess instead of hours.
Why not take out keystone in middle this seems like council job
Bet thats a lot of fun, id love to operate machines like those.
don't you just love when a plan comes together
great job all round
I bet they were under a time crunch to get that done, and open the line up
Not sure how old that bridge was ,but it was built to last awhile 😂😅😊
A thing of beauty destroyed to make way for another piece of utilitarian tat I presume.
In North America, we would have lowered the railbed as it would have been cheaper and less disruptive.
that'd be a pond quite soon in the UK :D
Pity the old bridge had to go but cool machine action...👍
Happy birthday to meet! Merry Christmas!!
What shame to see it go!!!

nice bridge
Very odd method of demolishing a stone arched bridge, must be getting paid by the hour???
I would love to have all the cut stone.
Oh, that's just too, too bad.
why couldn't they have just dug the track bed deeper and put concreat skirting around the earth the footings rest on
Its cheaper. We live in a world of beurocrats it doesnt matter if its old as far as their concerned it doesnt matter

I don't know how infrastructure projects would be managed if we didn't have religious holidays.
too bad all that beautiful stone work is being chucked into a land fill probably.
In North America, they would have rebuilt the roadbed and lowered the tracks.

А зачем его ломать
Dutch a shame that stone has been broken up🤔🤔
Sehr schade um die schöne Brücke!
Poor bridge

yes - i just hope they use that lovely cut stone for a restoration project somewhere.
Get some real trucks
This want Republican build and had to be torn down

1chish could be a service track.
