- We can't contain our excitement. The Rivian R1S, first true 3 row electric SUV is finally here and those on the order list are lucky, lucky, lucky. But how is it off road? Keep watching, we tried it out! And check out how it fits kids car seats, what it's like to get into the third row and how it performs on road.
This SUV seats 7, can fit up to 5 child car seats, including 3 across the center row bench and is fully off road capable. The third row has ample head room, there's tons of clever storage and just as many fun, clever details as its pickup truck sibling, the R1T.
Priced starting at $72,500 and topping out at about $95K, it has dual and quad motor options, has standard 4 wheel drive and gets up to 320 miles on a charge. It can replenish up to 140 miles in 20 minutes at a DC fast charger and at a level 2 charger can recharge over night.

Nice review that prioritizes aspects that a lot of people are interested in but don't often get covered (personally liked the coverage of the floor mats). Just one small point, you said that there's "a little bit of storage underneath here" (2:36 mark) talking about the rear under floor compartment. In fact, like the frunk, I believe that top tray pulls out and gives you a much deeper compartment for additional storage (air compressor cables or the optional small spare can go there). Not sure about the back, but the frunk has a drain plug and can be used as a cooler.
You are right about the rear storage spot! It adds 7 cubic feet... it's pretty nice. And we did love those floor mats 😍

Great review! My wife and I are considering this car for our new family and really appreciate your informative video. I have one question, when an infant seat is installed behind the passage seat, is there enough leg room in the front passenger seat for a tall (6’2”) person to sit comfortably?

Love the R1S. I only wish its energy efficiency wasn't so low (2.06 miles-per-kWh), but that's to be expected with such larger, heavier, boxier EVs.

OK, it is a great looking car. The biggest deal breaker for me is that there is no RETRACTABLE sunroof!!! I love the fresh air, even if it’s a cloudy or cold day. I don’t see this as something that Rivian will change.

There should be a shade to block the sun from coming in thru the roof… how hard is that to add? no idea why ev makers like Rivian and Tesla are giving glass roofs, must suck on a summer day on a long road trip .. it’s gotta get hot

I would trade my Tesla for this in a heartbeat. I love my Tesla but this thing is amazing. I was able to demo the truck. It waiting to see the SUV in person.
Can the forward facing seat be still installed in the second row and slide forward to access the third row?
Forward facing seat... yes using the LATCH system, though the space to climb into the third row is tight, though it's probably larger than the space created when sliding the seat forward with the infant seat base installed. We didn't try sliding and tilting the forward facing seat because it was installed with the seat belt.
Can i slide a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood in the back ?

Your opening title is incorrect. It’s not the first 3 row electric SUV. I think Tesla Model X has that covered for several years.
So far Rivian has no overlap on models with Tesla, that’s a real advantage.

Rivian - pronounce it like VIVIAN (the ladies name). It's not RiviON or RiviANNE. Driving me nuts so I had to say it.
It’s driving me crazy too. People saying it wrong sounds like they are talking through their teeth asking their butler to pull their Rivi-yawwwn around to the other side of the yacht and load it full of the cash from their royal tennis court at prep school. Lol
