- These are my favorite moments in Elementary where Sherlock displays in uncharacteristic amount of vulnerable emotion and feelings. We often see other emotions, but not these, which shows some of his growth.
First one is from s2e6, and the second from s2e7.
Johnny Lee Miller is an amazing actor and this shows one of the reasons. He captures perfectly a person that's uncomfortable and nervous about sharing these types of feelings, but yet finds it necessary. Even his body language is fantastic.

See this is why I prefer Elementary over Sherlock, especially due to the second part. Holmes, in the book, wasn't just a detective. He was a philosopher too.. A thinker, above all. And thinking doesn't restricts itself to just quick superhuman deductions or solving a case just by looking at file. This version was much closer to the canon..

I liked both shows, and both had very interesting interpretations of the character. But if we are looking for definitive interpretations of the character, then on film it is hard to beat Basil Rathbone, and on TV, my own personal favourite interpretation, Jeremy Brett.
I assume you have seen the TV series with him as Holmes, but in the unlikely even you haven't, please go and watch the first couple of episodes of that, to see if you like it. I suspect as a fan of the character you might like to see a more faithful to the source material adaptation and interpretation. Both Cumberbatch's and Miller's take are very modern, Brett's far more traditional :)
When was he a philosopher?
Jonny Lee is quirkier, shows inner wrestling and pain, is more natural angry (when he flips), visibly wrestles with flaws/shortcomings which he can't or has trouble with to recognize openly/directly. In short... TONS of more identifiable and heartwarming to me. The other is too close to Rathbone, snooty, snobby.
Jonny Lee Miller is such a great actor. And gestures... so amazing and natural.
Totally agree. His body language is a huge part of it… and he’s managed to make them unique to this character. If you watch him in other work, he does not have the same body language at all…
@@arielreyes001 I really like the gestures he added to his character in Emma (2009) as well, they make a big difference.

There is a fundamentally human element in Elementary (pun not really intended but there it is) that is definitely lacking in Sherlock.
In Sherlock, every detail is part of a labyrinthine plot.
In Elementary yes there are subtle details and incremental plot points - but the human challenges are the meat of the series.
Sherlock is a puzzle box with a riddle at its core. Elementary is a puzzle box with heart.

When I first saw the scene where Sherlock is genuinely opening up to people, I actually began to wonder if it might be possible for me to find a group to open up to. I'm not an addict but I struggle with my own challenges. And people are the hardest thing for me to understand or try to communicate with.
I sometimes see myself as being faster mentally but slower emotionally. So any prolonged exposure to someone else ends up being more damaging than healthy and I wind up alone and frustrated yet again.
Then Mycroft speaks up and I feel totally angry at him for intruding on what I, and possibly Sherlock, perceived to be a private moment. It was a public meeting but it was still private, if you understand my meaning. Sherlock has been seen by many people, many, many people in the greater London and New York area, without his clothes on. But this meeting is where he was truly exposing himself and it's in those moments that your family, especially those family from whom you are estranged, are especially unwelcome.

Who knew a scene like that could have such effects. Perhaps it is that what makes some of these scenes so special...
Theres a reason why we are reluctant to share. Sharing makes vulnerable, its a very big risk. Sherlock demonstrates that very well

the producer showed a good faith in Jonny Lee Miller. who had guessed he would be so good in Elementary? His acting work is brilliant, and I am going to follow his acting in the near future.
Apart from that fact, one can see his youthness disappearing in the seasons from 1-7- But his big brown eyes----melting!!!!
Love this because Sherlock explains so perfectly my problem with the world as it is now.

This is called character development, something Sherlock's writer forgot about completely.
Hard agree! The writing on Sherlock always sold the brilliant actors short. Cumberbatch is too good for Moffat. I love both shows, but Elementary does so many things so much better....
It's called a flat character arc. It was probably intentional, _and_ it's also more faithful to the source material, since Conan Doyle didn't intend Sherlock to change much. The stories weren't about Sherlock Holmes changing and learning how to be a better man, they were about Sherlock Holmes solving crimes.

I love Moffatt and Mark Gatiss but they're fanfiction writers with a budget.
@@ysgramornorris2452 only Sherlock didn't solve that many cases, and some of them are too far fetch, like the case during Watson wedding, that was the biggest what the fuck in the show. Most of the series is either about Moriarty or the big villain of that season. And Sherlock in Doyle do go through a character art but it happened quite subtle, and it happened mostly through Watson eyes and thoughts, so it never go into detail on how Sherlock actually think.
That scene in The Marchioness, is so moving (I’m watching it with my noise cancelling headphones on, bc yeah)

Sherlock and Mycroft were just brilliant. My only wish for the series was more episodes with Mycroft and Moriarty. Perfection!

my parents had the complete anthology and those stories were just the right size to read oneself to sleep. I got into Sherlock early. It's brilliant. when you watch Sherlock done by an actor it's am immediate yay or nay. Miller is a yay all the way.
Miller acts Sherlock more like day-to-day autistic man. The way he notice smells, and focus on the very detail, even i the body language in other people :)) ( it is hilarious when he says to Watson: you obviously had sex, you walk differently...:)) ) I nearly fell off the couch from laughing out load...
Could you ever imagine Moffat ever allowing his edgy cool self insert to ever show such vulnerability without it being an intellectual exercise to humiliate and or undermine someone else?

I like to thinks about this scene and it has many layers. It's about Sherlock opening up. It's attempt of connecting show with its original, like saying: This isn't different Sherlock, but original Sherlock in different circumstances (+-). It's also commentary about how our environmental and times as whole can affect our lives. It also can by seen as description of our times. Maybe more...
