A wonderful example not only of Cliff Edwards, but of early sound film making. One camera that couldn't move (it was in a fixed position within a soundproof booth so the noise of the camera wouldn't be recorded), one microphone overhead in a fixed position, everything sung and played LIVE in real time. You'll notice that Edwards never budges, except to enter and exit, and the chorus behind makes no noise when he's performing. And enjoy the primitive choreography when the chorus finally does dance!
I've been listening to recordings of jazz and pop from the 1920s-1930s from an old radio show in New York called The Big Broadcast, hosted by Rich Conaty. A great resource for this kind of talent.
(i think i got them right) nobody but you performed by Cliff Edwards from "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" Some folks want a doctor when they're out of sorts Some folks want a lot of fun and some are fond of sports But all I want, sweetheart is only you I don't want a tonic I want no change of air I'll find heaven any place as long as you are there Sweetheart, just you Sweetheart, you'll do Who can bring the breath of spring Who can make the songbirds sing Nobody - nobody but you Who can brighten darkest skies Who can dry my tear-dimmed eyes Nobody - nobody but you And when I'm lonely and weary and everything seem wrong Who is the only thats cheery and puts the gladness in my song Who can bring the sunshine where there's been darkness and despair Nobody - nobody but you
Yes, the UOGB gang is truly astounding - going to a concert is on my bucket list! Will's 'Get Plucky' book was reprinted by Hachette in 2017, but they have changed the name to "Ukulele for Beginners".
I just love this man..sadly we forgotten as time went on..now days it seems that he is making a come of back in the way of the 78 record collecters..I my salfe still have records buy this wundful careter..cliff Edwards ..
And Tiny Tim thought he started something... ha... hardly. He figured he had to dress stupidly to win fans... Ukulele Ike already had him beat on talent!
Joe Williston Western Electric sound-on-disc. Same as Vitaphone, but only Warners' and First National used that name. From the very beginning, Warners' recorded louder and clearer than MGM. Note how the chorus is off-center? Because the film was copied using an aperture for sound-on-film.
Negative. Tiny Tim wasn't even born in 1929, so this has absolutely nothing to do with him. What he's actually mimicking here are the ubiquitous jazz scat riffs of the time that were sang by many and instrumentally were voiced in the brass section of big bands, most famously by Duke Ellington during 1920's Cotton Club tenure. The song is delivered in the standard "sweet and hot" approach - 'sweet,' delivered plain as originally written, and 'hot,' delivered in an up-tempo jazz-like approach.

What a talent Cliff Edwards was. How sad he was forgotten in his later years. Thank you for the video clip.

This is a clip from the full length motion picture The Hollywood Review of 1929.
I’m 36 and I love this.
Cliff Edwards was breathtaking!

(i think i got them right)
nobody but you
performed by Cliff Edwards
from "The Hollywood Revue of 1929"
Some folks want a doctor
when they're out of sorts
Some folks want a lot of fun
and some are fond of sports
But all I want, sweetheart
is only you
I don't want a tonic
I want no change of air
I'll find heaven any place
as long as you are there
Sweetheart, just you
Sweetheart, you'll do
Who can bring the breath of spring
Who can make the songbirds sing
Nobody - nobody but you
Who can brighten darkest skies
Who can dry my tear-dimmed eyes
Nobody - nobody but you
And when I'm lonely and weary
and everything seem wrong
Who is the only thats cheery
and puts the gladness in my song
Who can bring the sunshine where
there's been darkness and despair
Nobody - nobody but you
dont even get me started with that man. hot hot hot. LOVE the chord changes and berautiful vocal.
Wonderful! Thank you for posting this.
As much as you do? You bet I do! The girls tend to clump a bit but that was the way then. Fascinating glimpse into time.
これは世界大恐慌の始まりとなった年の、ハリウッドのショービジネスのつかの間の輝きだ。
儚く脆い夢にこそ人は美しい調べを聴くものだ。
Will Grove-White (of the UOGB) rates Cliff Edwards as his uke hero. He writes about him in his excellent book 'Get plucky with the ukulele'.

This is a bop! Love it.
Great scatting at the end by Cliff!
Brilliant to the bone.
I just love this man..sadly we forgotten as time went on..now days it seems that he is making a come of back in the way of the 78 record collecters..I my salfe still have records buy this wundful careter..cliff Edwards ..
Wonderful Mike mix on the Ukulele, I would figure for 1929 one or two tracks ,the most.
This is wonderful :)
What a lover, between Cliff Edwards and Al Bowlly I'm a goner... lol...
1929 - They had it going on !
Love it!
What a wonderful little film - thanks for posting.
thank you
Love catching the little mistakes the dancers make in these old scenes. A slight stumble, a missed step etc.
Everything has to be perfect nowadays
Amanda Palmer brought me here. Thank you!
Amanda Palmer brought me here as well :D
me too! :D
Amanda Fucking Palmer.
I love Cliff Edwards
george formby was inspired to play the ukelele by this artist.
Super excellent
EXCELENT RETRO BEFORE 30S!!! I LOVE IT!!!
Now those are some fancy tails!
Top notch!
And Tiny Tim thought he started something... ha... hardly. He figured he had to dress stupidly to win fans... Ukulele Ike already had him beat on talent!
Whoa - that ended abruptly. One split-second bow and then suddenly he’s vanished.
You don't need to format this to wide screen. It cuts off the top and bottom of the picture. Thanks for posting anyway. The audio alone is a treat.
Awesome
Does anyone know where I can find some of the chords for Cliff's music?
Yes, nobody but YOU!
Definitely Jiminy Cricket.
I've worked out the chords for this song
Super Stone Groove!!!
❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦
I like this song. However, Fred Rich and his orchestra's jazzy speakeasy style version is even better yet
My Dad was born in 1929
He was a talented sanger...
What's with the collars ?
Just the thing to take your mind off politics ....
Is this a Vitaphone or sound on film recording?

Vitaphone transcription discs.
I'm just curious but was this film originally made in Panavision or Cinemascope?
No. Long before cinemascope
I don't think they're really playing in the background...
California.
Sounds like Tiny Tim at the end or Tiny Tim sounded like him😆😆😅😅

love Cliff but the girls make me seasick! I scrolled the video offscreen
Minstrel show ish...nice
The last part spoiled it...Otherwise ,fucking brilliant...__
