FORMENTERA LADY
(Fripp, Sinfield)
Houses iced in whitewash guard a pale shore-line
Cornered by the cactus and the pine.
Here I wander where sweet sage and strange herbs grow
Down a sun-baked, crumpled, stony road.
Dusty wheels, leaning, rusting in the sun;
Snuff brown walls where Spanish lizards run.
Here I'm shadowed by a dragon fig tree's fan
Ringed by ants and musing over man.
I'll unwind my old strings while the sun shine down
Won't climb any high thing while the sun shine.
Formentera Lady sing your song for me
Formentera Lady sweet lover.
Lamplight glows on old guitars the travellers strum;
Incense children dance to an Indian drum.
Here Odysseus charmed for dark Circe fell,
Still her perfume lingers still her spell.
Time's grey hand won't catch me while the sun shine down
Untie and unlatch me while the stars shine.
Formentera Lady dance your dance for me
Formentera Lady dark lover.

I had a wonderful time playing the cornet on this album. Robert and the rest of the crew there were such an awesome group to be around. Being able to feature on an album created by rock legends was an experience I will never forget.
Your contribution is first rate. So glad your talents are featured to good effect on this album.
This is Amazing
When you were playing the cornet on this album, in Command Studios in London in 1971, I was a one-year-old baby living in Israel.
Some twenty years later, after years of delving into classical British rock music, I discovered this album and was enchanted by it. Your cornet playing certainly contributed to the album's charm.
And so, what you recorded in Lodnon in 1971 had a profound positive impact on a troubled young man living in Israel circa 1990.
Some years later, I discovered that the cause of both my troubles and my fascination with classical British rock music was my autism - I grew up on the autism spectrum in an era in which nobody knew that such a spectrum existed.
King Crimson's early albums remain among my favourite natural tranquilizers to this very day.
You did a great job. Greetings from Croatia Solin
I was wondering, did you ever been in Croatia, Split before?
Formentera is a small island, close to Ibiza. This music seems to be distilled from its atmosphere, in the middle of summer: the heat, the burning light of the Mediterranean, the siesta time in the shade of a pine tree, the smells of a thousand flowers and the sea, and a girl, tanned by the sun, which approaches smiling.
Exactly....Agreed....Thanks from Italy
Nottin wrong with that.
I'm a new KC fan and honestly seeing all the comments about their discography being hard to find makes me feel so lucky that they're moving to virtual discography
Thank you Mr. Fripp in seeing the value of digital archives.

I didn't know who King Crimson was. But I saw the album at Hit Records in Dallas and I liked the cover. Can't remember the year if it was 74, 75, 76 ? But I went home after buying it and put it on my record player and realized these dudes were top of the line musicians. I've loved Fripp and his changing company ever since. I was a big YES fan and I remember thinking that drummer plays just like Bill Bruford. Come to find out it was Bill Bruford. At 66 I still love this music today.
This is lovely! I cannot imagine my husband's parents which are about your age would ever listen to King Crimson! Great to know there are people who have good taste in music and are not afraid to listen to something more difficult! Greetings from Prague.
Absolutely. We had a great music life, which continues today. All those concerts. I've seen all the old bands except for a few.
Hi my first experience was about 75 or 76 on AFN - Amercian Forces Network on AM band in Germany. Yes KC was part of various listeners' request broadcasts. My new generation now 10 years old is interested as well. Unfortunately the famous Circus songs with the very right animations is now unavailable here!

This is really one of the most unique items in the KC catalogue. There's really nothing like it.
Agreed
Islands Is super underrated, I get it's different than literally every other Crimson album, but it's actually sooooo good
Every King Crimson album is difderent than others
@@leggedihooke6774 not all albums are different. The 2nd album is very much like the 1st, and the 80's all have a similar feel. You could also maybe get away with saying ConstruKction of Light and Power to Believe have a similar feel as well.
That's the great thing about Crimson, they are the Stanley Kubrick of rock.
I agree with you
I love it too.
It's finally time for the Formentera Ladies to sing their songs and for the Sailors to tell their tales. Y E S! My favorite album with my favorite track!!
Interesting. A lot of people didn't like this at all. Probably it is too quiet and introspective after the previous albums, but obviously they knew what they were doing.
They're seriously considering uploading their entire catalogue?! What kind of universe I'm in?
A shit one, if the same as mine, but at least we have king crimson in UA-cam and spotify
I know right! I remember back in 2019 people would upload The Court Of the Crimson King under different names as a meme and they all got taken down! 😂
We're in the right timeline
This may be my favorite song of all time. It’s just.... like nothing else. And it hits deep in there.
Me too, this one and Ladies of the Road are especial, really different
@@marcelaoyarce5384 Ladies of the Road is Burlesque, filthiest sax ever
Definitely one of my KC faves....Greeting from Italy
Had the pleasure of seeing KC perform this live on my 20th Birthday 2/20/1972 in Saint Louis. My eyes were opened to new great music. I seen KC everytime they came to Saint Louis. Each entity was comprised of superior talented musicians!!!
Wow you got to see them with Boz!
The later Crimson with Wetton , Buford and Cross was an incredible live band, producing some of the greatest improvisational music of all time!! But, the first 4 Crimson albums were the most fresh and creative they ever made!
Fripp truly is a musical genius!
You might be interested to know that their lyricist Pete Sinfield once explained on his website that the first 4 albums were intended to have themes for each of the four alchemical elements, earth, water, fire and air (I'm not sure I have the order correct here).
Even after 50 years, the excellence continues. ❤👍
I blindly bought this album in my teens . It was one that I never lent to others and that's the reason why I still have it . Unlike other albums lent to friends. It has shaped my musical appreciation throughout my life . Absolute classic for me.

I was fortunate to experience a King Crimson concert at the Eastown Theater in Detroit in 1971. Their music soared & so did I. Timeless....
A Hidden GEM.
ISLANDS HAS A ELEGANCE TO IT.
AGES BEAUTIFUL.
FORMENTERA LADY DANCE FOR ME ...
I love the way Pete Sinfield wrote the lyric to Formentera lady this takes you to a very beautiful place
This song sounds so magical
Yeah, Fripp gonna download the Whole discography
This, for me, is a song of lost love. July 1968: Barcelona, Ibiza, Formentera. The girl from Berkeley. She was going there and I wasn't. But i pursued her and have never forgotten my loss.
i have no words to describe how good this music is for me, remind me of better times...
I love king crimson
ES VERDAD...PARA MI OPINION , ESTE DISCO ES EL MAS COOL DE CRIMSON...MISMO POR LAS ARMONIAS....MISMO QUE QUISE DECIR TAMBIEN QUE LOS DEMAS SON MAS RUIDOSOS....COMO ´´BIBLIA NEGRA Y SIN ESTRELLAS´´ O ´´RED´´..POR EJEMPLO.....ESTE ES MAS TRANQUILO COMPARACION DE LOS QUE NOMBRE Y DEL RESTO DE SUS DISCOS.....Un saludo desde Buenos aires amigo
Have you seen the fim "More", from Barbet-Schroeder ? (starring Mimsy Farmer and Klaus Grünberg, music: Pink Floyd, mostly shot on the island of Ibiza)
This was the second KC album I heard, and at first I really didn't get it. I had it on a pirate tape borrowed from a friend and was preparing to return it, but decided to give it one more go and was blown away by the horns in The Letters, and held on to the cassette a little bit longer. 25 years later, I still have a VERY soft spot for Islands, a very special album in King Crimson discography. And of course I'm celebrating its 50th anniversary by listening to it yet again.
Imagine returning from the record store with his album in hand in ‘71 or early ‘72, putting the needle on the first track and the first thing you hear are those strings 0:00
I lived it.....Almost 67 yr old from Italy
Islands is the KC’s lost gem
Another fantastic King Crimson album! Thank you mister Fripp.
Mark, as a sometime trumpet player can I say that your playing on this track has been an endless source of inspiration for me over many years. Thank you.

Boz Burell played with Bad company too. Great bass player. One of my favorite album of that incredible group. May be the best of all . Superb photo of a constellation very far in that time.

Such a beautiful and melodic song this is the only King Crimson record I own!
Such a gorgeous album cover! An interesting thing about it is that the front and back labels on the vinyl are backwards!
Agreed all the way...A greeting from Italy
Notice that the color red is prominent in the astronomical photograph.
I saw KC play at Radio City Hall in NYC the prior decade, and somewhere in the middle of the performance various colors were being flashed onto the group and stage until they at last landed on a bright red... This was as if to say: Yes, it has been 50 years, but we are still here baby.
heard this album for the first time recently and I'm really vibing with it :)

I get Moody Blues + King Crimson vibes from this

One of my Favorites! Thank you for posting.
Keith Tippett on piano!
I first knew this album in the 70s as a teenager and loved it. Haven't heard it in decades but I've been listening to it constantly the last couple of weeks. What a beautiful transcendental album that, unlike a lot of music from that time, has not only not aged but got better. And in one of the more bizarre journeys in modern music Boz Burrell went off to join Bad Company.

King Crimson time
I don't get why some ppl don't like this album, what is there not to like? it is amazing and their 4th best imo
I’m with you and love it but it may be a little too jazz influenced for a lot of people. Same reason people don’t care for the improv section of Moonchild (I love it). For people who aren’t accustomed to hearing free jazz or jazz improvisation/harmony these may sound a little directionless. However, I didn’t like this album at first either. It wasn’t until after I got into jazz that it finally clicked. Sometimes the ear has to be slowly introduced to this kind of harmony in order to enjoy and “get it”, although I hate that term. The harmony used in Crim’s (and jazz) music isn’t something heard often in popular music. A lot of diminished, whole tone, altered, and non western sounds.
There were tons of jazz in Lizard and it's a much richer album.
I love this album too. It is a beautiful album. I do prefer the more aggressive edge to the next three albums though, but this is equal to those albums imo.
@@JeremiahPickardMusic agree 👍🏼👍🏼
The real question is, will we get Earthbound 😳
or the steven wilson mixs
the best game ever
AI'll admit that if he gave us Earthbound + the Complete Ronan Chris Murphy remix of the 28/6/1974 Casino Asbury Park, NJ gig (which essentially is USA), that would certainly be astonishing indeed {he says, as suddenly a vision of Diagelev exclaiming to a young & naive Jean Cocteau, "Astonish me!"}
But, alas, I do believe that Fripp gave us Premium UA-camrs the Ladies of the Road Live 1971-1972 compilation and the 23/11/73 Amsterdam Concertgebouw show as stand-ins for the others. The reason for this swap is a mystery, but it's a theory.
😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳 I wish.
I really want USA. The version of larks 2 on that is incredible. As well as the asbury park improv and exiles.
Qué hermosura.Long Life to King
Boz, my favorite voice
My list of favourite KC vocalists would probably go Wetton, Boz, Belew, Greg, then the rest.
As much as I like lots of Greg's vocals in the first two albums, I feel he developed much further in ELP.
Wetton had always blended well with the albums he was on, and offered quite a great range of styles, so that's probably why he's my favourite (gotta listen to some Asia huh?).
Even though Boz was only on one record, he made a great impression on me and gave the record a great sense of uniqueness of tone in comparison to the other records, his reserved voice was a breathe of fresh air for King Crimson!
Beautiful
Thank You ...

My English class was put into the retired English teacher's room.
This album among many other gems were up on the wall for display.
Let's just say that the album mysteriously disappeared from the classroom and somehow ended up in my room
Like others posting here, I had never before heard music like the music made by King Crimson. Years later I was told the genre is Avant Garde and now 4 decades later, it still sounds original or "fresh" to me. As an impecunious teen, I bought these when I could find then and when I could afford them. $7 - $8 when your monthly income is around $250 - $300 is a big investment, but I love music and still do. I remember a light tan or beige album cover (thick paper) with little art, but for a raised, small bas-relief part. (I still don't know what that depicted, nor recall with precision where it was on the album cover.) Thanks for all the great music thru the years!
I am guilty of cutting KC songs like this short. No more. The Sailors Tale reprise with the Song of the Gulls mutated through the vocal chanting.
Wow. These guys were special. I only like KC from Giles Giles and Fripp to 1974. I can't do 1980s music from bands that were doing this here at one time. Even if it's a different lineup. That 80s sound with KC style doesn't fit me; never will.
Man; Islands is my favorite. If Cirkus was on this album; I might not need another. The Letters is STUNNING. That guitar is so sparing but it hits harder that way. It's special when the song gets guitar treatment cause it's not there so often..
After Red KC died..the 80's were horrible....islands is an amazing album ...i used to take mescaline in the 70's and lisyen to it at 5 o'clock in the morning...amazing feeling
