I am constantly amazed how people don't understand how tariffs work. Tariffs are paid by US consumers. That is a fact, anyone telling you otherwise is simply wrong and doesn't understand tariffs. Its purpose is to raise money and persuade US consumers to look elsewhere for a good. I took economic classes in college, and tariffs are explained in high-school. I should not have to state the obvious here, and I see too many people refusing to listen to facts. If you think the target country pays any taxes, you are flat out wrong. You have the internet at your fingers, look it up yourself.

Why is Canada the number one importer of grains and beef when America used to be the number exporters? We simply can't produce some of the products we consume due to various production inputs. It's much more economical to engage in trade with other nations. One issue is labor costs in the U.S. are very high when compared to other nations. Another issue is we don't have enough domestic resources to produce the amount of goods we consume. This means we would still need to rely on other countries for the "ingredients" to assemble these goods. And I agree we do need more thinkers and less worriers.

They're alot to unpack with your comment.... I'll start with inflation. The entire world experienced high inflation due to COVID. Even if Trump was in office, we would have still had high inflation. Shutting down the global economy eventually lead to a shortage of goods, which caused prices to increase. Wars in the Middle East and Europe also caused the price of food and fuel to increase. Russian and Ukraine are large oil and grain exporters, so the conflict caused additional shortages on the global market. Because we are in a global, interconnected economy, these shortage caused our prices to also increase. We also haven't been building houses at a fast enough rate, so now we have a housing shortage, which also leads to hiring housing costs. Congress did pass a bipartisan bill, called the "The Inflation Reduction Act", which implemented several measures to reduce inflation. The IRA was ultimately successful. Inflation has been steadily decreasing for the past 2 years.
Now, these Tariffs are terrible idea because they will cause very high inflation in the near term. We can't buy American, if the American product doesn't exist yet..... It takes years to build new factories, create new supply chains, train a new workforce, and organize distribution systems. It'll be decades before our economy recovers. Almost every economist says that this is a terrible idea. I haven't even brought up the geopolitical fallout from these tariffs on our allies. That's an even more complex issue that will ruin American soft power.

I explained that I was going to buy a new car because I was concerned Trump would impose his tariffs which would raise the price of the car I was interested in by 25% (Japanese car, but built in Mexico) if I waited and would need to buy the car while Trump was in office. Their entire economy is dependent on the US market, ours is not dependent on theirs. The US will fell a minor blip in prices while their economies will collapse. Also, maybe they haven't been paying attention but Trump 2.0 is not playing games. I would expect Trump to announce even higher tariffs now that they want a trade war. There is going to be much _"wailing and gnashing of teeth"_ in Mexico and Canada as their economies collapse.
Tariffs ARE paid by the consumers here in the US. That is a simple facts. Canada has a better domestic infrastructure than the US does. And they have provided resources to Canadians that have detailed which companies are Canadian based and which ones are US based. Additionally, most of the Canadians are pretty united on the front that Trump is being incredibly dumb here and a good portion of them like to stick retaliatory tariffs.

Cancelled Netflix, Disney, month long vacation to the US with the Family, anything having anything to do with the US that I can control is gone forever. Re-organizing all my investment out of the US. Gas prices in my town NEVER came back down. Prior to 2020, the highest summer price here was about 4.50 but the average was between 2.99 and 3.50. Now the average is between 4.50 and 5.00 with regular spikes up to 6.00 in summer. So yea, democrats can cry me a river. Their president caused the record high inflation that we're still suffering under.

Learned an unexpected benefit of living in a Trump infested area of America. These idiots don’t think he’s going to increase grocery prices. So because of that, my family was able to pretty much clear the shelves of the non-perishable canned vegetables, meats, and beans before the price hikes hit. We have enough food for the entirety of his presidency now.

Since the water was turned back on in California, we can grow all the limes we need and lumber won't be a problem as long as people are elected who love America and won't enable conditions that will cause forests to be incinerated. With all of this technology today American's lives should be better, not worse.

We simply can't produce some of the products we consume due to various production inputs. It's much more economical to engage in trade with other nations. One issue is labor costs in the U.S. are very high when compared to other nations. Another issue is we don't have enough domestic resources to produce the amount of goods we consume. This means we would still need to rely on other countries for the "ingredients" to assemble these goods. And I agree we do need more thinkers and less worriers.
Unfortunately there aren't many thinkers left in America. Many thought mindless and pointless manufacturing jobs would always be there.

The entire world experienced high inflation due to COVID. Even if Trump was in office, we would have still had high inflation. Shutting down the global economy eventually lead to a shortage of goods, which caused prices to increase.
Wars in the Middle East and Europe also caused the price of food and fuel to increase. Russian and Ukraine are large oil and grain exporters, so the conflict caused additional shortages on the global market. Because we are in a global, interconnected economy, these shortage caused our prices to also increase.
We also haven't been building houses at a fast enough rate, so now we have a housing shortage, which also leads to hiring housing costs.
Congress did pass a bipartisan bill, called the "The Inflation Reduction Act", which implemented several measures to reduce inflation. The IRA was ultimately successful. Inflation has been steadily decreasing for the past 2 years.
Now, these Tariffs are terrible idea because they will cause very high inflation in the near term.
We can't buy American, if the American product doesn't exist yet..... It takes years to build new factories, create new supply chains, train a new workforce, and organize distribution systems.
It'll be decades before our economy recovers. Almost every economist says that this is a terrible idea.
I haven't even brought up the geopolitical fallout from these tariffs on our allies. That's an even more complex issue that will ruin American soft power.

Canada has a better domestic infrastructure than the US does. And they have provided resources to Canadians that have detailed which companies are Canadian based and which ones are US based. Gas prices in my town NEVER came back down. Prior to 2020, the highest summer price here was about 4.50 but the average was between 2.99 and 3.50. Now the average is between 4.50 and 5.00 with regular spikes up to 6.00 in summer.

As an older guy, I grew up when the United States was self-sufficient. Since the water was turned back on in California, we can grow all the limes we need and lumber won't be a problem as long as people are elected who love America and won't enable conditions that will cause forests to be incinerated. The economy was much better during the lower technology era!. Homelessness in the 1960s declined to a point where some researchers predicted its near disappearance in the 1970s. By 2025, homelessness has seen a marked increase compared to the 1960s. The U.S. recorded 771,480 people experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2024, which is the highest since records began. With all of this technology today American's lives should be better, not worse.
