To be fair Greg's version would be heavily biased to his view. Frank might actually be a decent father. He doesn't tend to actually do that many bad things in the books. Which says a lot because Gregg has something to say about everyone.

I feel like Rodrick's the only normal one in the family. He actually has a goal that he wants to achieve, and is actually passionate about it. Greg is just a guy who lies to get what he wants, and manny is just manny. Susan is also partly to blame as well, as she's also even made Greg sleep inside a drawer when he was younger. Not only that, but she also condones manny's bad behavior, like how during cabin fever, manny turned off the electricity and everything in the house because "nobody taught him how to tie his shoes".

Greg is kinda a jerky kid, but he has his good moments, that people seem to forget. I wouldn’t call Rodrick “normal” necessarily since Greg mentions how he gets a lot of what he does from Rodrick, as well as him not being the brightest.

I love how Rodrick, despite usually being such a jerk to Greg, doesn't even have to be asked to jump into his van and drive around looking for his little brother, he just does so immediately out of worry and panic.
Well, I think that’s how it is for a lot of people and their siblings. They may annoy the shit out of you sometimes, and you won’t always get along, but it’d still kill you if anything were to happen to them.
I took it as an extreme on rodricks character that he was using it as an excuse to go out all night and do whatever he wanted, him actually looking for Greg fits the wholesomeness of this better though
Wow. This short fanfic really developed both Gregory and his dad. It transformed two characters that are mostly seen as completely shitty people too a surprisingly wholesome and nice set of characters.

An alternative timeline after the middle of the story of The Last Straw, where we get to see Frank's perspective and he changes to be a better father, is genuinely an amazing idea and I'm glad it's written

this feels like a really different version of greg. it might be the same one however, as this isn’t from his perspective.
This unironically made me cry holy shit. It's really sad seing the family cope with the fact that greg's missing, and frank and greg bonding at the end was very wholesome. Call me a wimp all you want for crying but damn this one got me deep.

It’s sad to think, though that apparently the diary of a wimpy kid books are based on Jeff’s real life. And in the books, his parents are awful. I’m sure they’re not really like that in real life but that’s kind of sad if they are.

The way he talks suggests he was a lot more like him but the expectations from his own dad carried over into his parenting style it looks like.

Frank completely ignoring the fact that it's low key his fault Greg was failing in school. Greg had no energy for class because SOMEONE was stealing all the snacks.
This might be relating to a bigger issue that whatever Greg is fed isn't sufficient. He could be anemic if he's having recurring issues staying awake with less food.

2:55 Honestly this is a real plot hole. As a high school English teacher the fact Greg has perfect penmanship and no grammatical errors, he should have an easy A or at worst a B. Certainly at the middle school level
it’s his work ethic and lack of homework submissions that lowered his grade significantly. he also bombed his essay meaning he really didn’t care about it

it's not that he doesn't love Greg, although, nobody loves Greg, he just doesn't want to show it. It's classic boomer father behavior. Jeff Kinney based Greg and his family on himself, Jeff's dad would've been a boomer, and for some reason, it was common for fathers to not show their love and act tough. (I wrote a whole damn essay about fathers because I wish I had one)
