  • Does the Christian receive the Holy Spirit the moment they believe? If so, how should we understand the accounts in the book of Acts when believers apparently receive the Holy Spirit subsequent to their conversion?

I was an atheist for years but I was a good person. Always watched what I would speak and always had the best interest in not causing harm amongst others. I got rid of social media for almost two years along with watching tv cuz those things just didn’t satisfy me any longer because all I saw was the bs they were spitting out that most can not see. I was also fasting and haven’t fornicated for 16 months. I also have gotten rid of a lot of old stuff that were only a burden because they held a lot of old memories. One night in my car, something came over me and myself manifested out of me sorta like a double image of me right in my plain view and that me was very dark and unhealthy and that me was killed and pierced with what seemed to be some kinda Fire of an arrow head or a spear that came down from up above and killed that manifestation of me. Right after that, I just wept and felt totally changed and sinning wasn’t a hard battle to do. My heart and whole being felt so free and light that even my singing went from a level 3 up to a level 9 in half a year. The experience made me a softer man in physical action but a convicted one in His deeds. Most friends and family couldn’t understand me and said that I have changed so much and they even find me boring because I don’t partake in their activities because my insides feels uneasy when surrounded by ungodly sights and sounds. Thank you Abba, Father for the second chance! Thank you Lord of Lords Jesus Christ for the everlasting love! Thank you also to the Comforter/Holy Spirit for saving me from my own darkness!

We have the spirit of Christ as a promise that once we believe with all our hearts, and all our being - He will always be with us. Fear not! We are advised not to worry about anything including death - because He is with us, and will help us get through it.

No, it’s not automatic. The Holy Spirit dwells within us all after Christ’s crucifixion but that doesn’t meant anything if you cant let Him out/manifest and be one with its consciousness. Here’s mine: I was an atheist for years but I was a good person. Always watched what I would speak and always had the best interest in not causing harm amongst others. Acts 19:1-7
1 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inlanda country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized inb the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. 7 There were about twelve men in all.

Wonderful passages that speak of the power and work of the Holy Spirit! However the question was “When does a believer receive the Holy Spirit?” I believe I heard this question answered with “at the moment they believe” but without any Scriptural evidence unless I missed it. I believe Acts 2:38 is very clear as to when a believer receives the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:13 states when we receive the holy spirit today. It is when we believe. Acts was a descriptive book not a prescriptive book. There were 6 different ways the Jews received the Spirit in the book of Acts. I believe it is Acts 15 where Peter realizes that the Jews would now be given the Spirit in the same manner as the gentiles, through believing only.

We can only talk about Jesus or testify of Jesus if the Holy Spirit is in us, that's what Paul is trying to say.
You cannot testify of Jesus if the Holy Spirit is not in you, because the Holy Spirit is the witness of the truth.

Hello Tim Conway, thank you for the blessing in sharing of this topic! I like that you mention all about (what seems) contradictory verses about receiving the Holy Spirit! Yes its hard to swallow by believer but its really there in our bible ^^
I recently being opened more about this by His grace and what you said is kind of in tune of what I get.
Before the receiving of Holy Spirit in Acts, yes we see the disciples are already His sheep, and even Jesus said the all clean except Judas (when He washed their feet)!
But on the other side bible said that they receive Holy Spirit later on Acts 2 + the Holy Spirit not yet come because Jesus not yet glorified. They surely not 'receiving' it as God want they to receive. The Samaritan in Acts 8 too.. stated as 'Holy Spirit not yet fall upon them'.
I believe both is true! And hope God will reveal more about this to me. Thank you for your ministry Jesus bless you more!

Hi, I think that you skipped the question of act 8. You cannot answer to the case of acts 8 by dealing with the case of acts 19 because they are not the same.
It's obvious that in acts 19, there is a problem in the understanding of the gospel, that is why they are not yet saved until Paul rebaptise them meaning that surely he explained the gospel of Christ (you cannot be saved by a confused message of the gospel; just knowing the baptism of John means that your understanding of the gospel is incomplete)
But in acts 8, they received the Good gospel (unless you think philipp did not knew the gospel?!) And the fact is that the only one difference when peter and John came, is the fact that they just prayed and layed hands: no more explanation of the gospel since they had already received the gospel and as simple as it is said, For as yet He (the spirit) had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus
So I'm not convinced by your answer pastor therefor, my understanding of this text of acts 8 is as simple, as literal as we read it, and I do not see the contradiction with the other texts like John 3 or romans 8:9 etc...
Just some can receive the spirit at the same time they believe, as cornelius, other after like the 12, or like in acts 8 (even though it's not the most frequent in the bible) But one thing is sure: the one Who really believe is saved or shall be saved

I grew up in the Church of Christ. In a preacher's family. It wasn't until the Spirit started actively convicting me that I realized that there is a doctrine of _cessasionism_ here. One of the huge intellectual barricades they use to justify this is Acts 8. The theory goes that because it took a laying on of hands _by the Apostles_ therefor when the Apostles all died off, there was no one who could pass on the gift anymore.
Of course, that complety bypasses and ignores the fact that just two chapters later, Peter _witnessed_ people receiving the Spirit _before_ anyone had laid hands on them.
The whole point of God pushing Peter to head to Samaria to check things out wasn't that the new believers _needed_ the Apostles... it was a lesson for _Peter_ to show him first hand that even the Samaritans were being accepted by God, a stepping stone to his revelation with Cornelius and the Romans.
Apparently that wasn't the end of it and Peter struggled with it for a while, and Paul shares with us that time he had to reprimand Peter for it...
Galatians 2:11-14 NLT - But when Peter came to Antioch, I had to oppose him to his face, for what he did was very wrong. When he first arrived, he ate with the Gentile Christians, who were not circumcised. But afterward, when some friends of James came, Peter wouldn’t eat with the Gentiles anymore. He was afraid of criticism from these people who insisted on the necessity of circumcision. As a result, other Jewish Christians followed Peter’s hypocrisy, and even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. When I saw that they were not following the truth of the gospel message, I said to Peter in front of all the others, “Since you, a Jew by birth, have discarded the Jewish laws and are living like a Gentile, why are you now trying to make these Gentiles follow the Jewish traditions?
Peter readily accepts the chastisement, and even commends Paul in _his_ last epistle...
2 Peter 3:15-16 NLT - And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him- speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.

Acts shows 3 groups of people who came to belief and received the Spirit in three different ways (I was told because how they treated the Lord): Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles.

KJV -- 2 Cor. 1:22 - Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
    *Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers*
    (22) Who hath also sealed us.-Better, who also sealed us. The thought thus expressed is that the gift of the Spirit, following on baptism or the laying on of hands, is as the seal of the covenant which God makes with His people, attesting its validity. (Comp. Ephesians 1:13; Ephesians 4:30; and, for the Jewish use of seals, Jeremiah 32:10.)
And given the earnest of the Spirit.-Better, for the same reason as before, gave. The Greek word for “earnest” (arrhabôn), which occurs here for the first time, and is used only by St. Paul in the New Testament (2Corinthians 5:5; Ephesians 1:14), has a somewhat interesting history. Originally a Hebrew word, from a verb meaning “to mix,” “to change,” “to pledge,” and so used, as a cognate noun, with the last of the three senses, it appears simply transliterated in the LXX. of Genesis 38:17-18. It would seem to have been in common use among the Canaanite or Phoenician traders, and was carried by them to Greece, to Carthage, to Alexandria, and to Rome. It was used by the Greek orator Isæus, and by Plautus and Terence among the earlier Latin writers. The full form came to be considered somehow as pedantic or vulgar, and was superseded in Roman law by the shortened “arrha,” the payment of a small sum given on the completion of a bargain as a pledge that the payer would fulfil the contract; and it has passed into Italian as “arra;” into modern French, as “les arrhes;” into popular Scotch even, as “arles.” As applied by St. Paul, it had the force of a condensed parable, such as the people of commercial cities like Corinth and Ephesus would readily understand. They were not to think that their past spiritual experience had any character of finality. It was rather but the pledge of yet greater gifts to come: even of that knowledge of God which is eternal life (John 17:3). The same thought is expressed, under a more Hebrew image, in the “firstfruits of the Spirit” in Romans 8:23. Grammatically, the “earnest of the Spirit” may be taken as an example of the genitive of apposition, “the earnest which is the Spirit.”

John 14:17 the Lord told the apostles that the Holy Spirit was with them and would be in them, not the other way around. The Word also says that he that hath not the Spirit of Christ is none of his" ( Rom. 8:5 ). The Spirit of Christ is the Holy Spirit which wasn't poured out until the day of Pentecost. So the apostles having believed and been water baptized were in the process of being saved but were not because the still needed the Holy Spirit infilling to be " born of the Spirit ".
Being saved is a process because it's not just about going to heaven and avoiding hell but being born again. Just as physical conception to actual birth involves a process so does recieving the " seed" of the Word to actual rebirth

If we are talking about people who *profess* to be Christians, but who doesn’t have genuine saving faith, I believe yes, they can very well be speaking by demons and never know it.

"I came to the conclusion" he states.... is the problem. When we rely on scripture only and our own personal interpretation, we will always have disunity in the Church. I experienced the gift of the grave through the Holy Spirit but I truly did loose it when I deliberately sinned days later. Monks have written about this experience. We are truly continually saved and we are "BEING" saved (Paul says this: " For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are BEING saved it is the power of God." ) it isn't a ONE TIME experience. James 2:24 "King James Bible:
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." Spoiler alert, Mary also did not have other children. "...until..." in the verse about her coming together with Joseph had another meaning in Greek. She truly is a "Perpetual virgin", crossing yourself is an ancient Christian tradition... icons have no good argument against them...the 1st 7 ecumenical councils are actually infallible if one believes the Bible when it is said about the Church being the pillar and ground of truth and that it truly would not be destroyed by Satan. Either you can deny scripture and Church History and church fathers.....and rely on your own interpretation......or you do your homework and incorporate yourself into the one true body of Christ! (Former baptist......) this is a lot to unpack but it's YOUR salavtion...salvation... out your own salvation with FEAR and TREMBLING!

I was baptized but not in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I don’t think I’ve been born of the Spirit. Maybe I don’t have saving faith. I felt like I had the Spirit because I was delivered from sexual sin but I don’t have this overwhelming love for God and Christ. Maybe because I had some doubt that’s I had committed the unpardonable sin.

Eastern Orthodoxy is the closest to what the Church Fathers teach as early as 51 AD. Irenaeus (taught by Polycarp) and Polycarp (who was taught by apostle John himself) factually, we must "put on Christ" in BAPTISM. This is an Orthodox, ancient tradition. "Acts 2:38 Repent and be baptized for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost" in Acts 9, Paul believed but did not receive the HS until he visited Ananias where he was baptized. If we look at scripture only....Sola scriptora...scripture... are missing key information. Iraneaus (30-100AD) says this "or the baptism instituted by the visible Jesus was for the remission of sins, but the redemption brought in by that Christ who descended upon Him, was for perfection; and they allege that the former is animal, but the latter spiritual. And the baptism of John was proclaimed with a view to repentance, but the redemption by Jesus was brought in for the sake of perfection."

A Calvinist believes that God has predestined a few to believe and that we don’t even have free-will to choose to become a believer! Basically the rest is doomed to hell and Jesus died for a few!

OK, you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior after you repent of your sins and place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ then, you receive the Holy Spirit. OK now you don’t need to listen to the sermon

Doug N What you said is misleading, people do need to watch this because so many people miss interpret a few scriptures or dont quite understand. Watching this sermon has given me a better understanding on how the Holy Spirit works.

Doug N , repentance and faith are gifts from God. We can't manifest these gifts on our own apart from the Spirit. They are given by God as an act of mercy upon us. PRAISE THE LORD!

You need the Spirit for repeating from sin.
Repent to God means changing the mind about God.

Tim Conway has it wrong. The Scriptures do not say unbelievers can say, "Jesus is Lord" as he erroniously stated. It says they will say to Jesus, "Lord, Lord" as in at the Judgement seat people will attempt to plead with God to let them into heaven. Because they are talking to God about their life, Matthew 7v22 "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?" The Scriptures rightly say that 1 Corinthians 12v3 " 3Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost." There is a great difference between emphatically declaring by the Spirit living within, "Jesus is the Lord" and lost sinners appearing before God on judgment day and saying "Lord" to God/Jesus to appeal to him to let you into heaven. They already died and stand before God. Be careful about false prophets/teachings. Take God/Jesus at Their Word, believe and have faith, faith by which you can extinguish the fiery darts of the enemy.

_Unbelievers_ are going to come to Jesus claiming to have _prophesied_ and cast out _demons_ in His Name? Not very likely.
