  • In this video, Dr. Ben Leichtling discusses how to evaluate your school's anti-bullying program to see if it is effective. Five key elements of an effective program are:
    1. There must be clear and escalating consequences for bullying behavior, including involvement of local law enforcement officers.
    2. There must be lots of publicity at school and in local media so that students, parents and teachers are all aware of the school's anti-bullying program and policies.
    3. All school staff -- teachers, counselors, bus drivers, cafeteria staff and administrators -- must all be involved. They should be taught the signs of bullying and the proper steps to be taken to stop it.
    4. Students must be actively involved in the program and see that bullies are effectively dealt with. Students should not be left on the sidelines as spectators, but must be taught the skills needed to help their peers fight bullying.
    5. Parents must be involved in the program. Interaction between parents and teachers must be encouraged and examples of effective handling of bullying must be made known to them.
Even if all of the key elements of an effective program are in place, no anti-bullying program will succeed without the active support of the school principal. The principal must take the side of bullying targets and help them avoid becoming victims. Bullies must be dealt with decisively and removed from the school, if necessary.

Hello Dr Ben. I am amazed at your experience and skills, quite sincerely, my congratulations to you. Similar to you, I have a burning passion to eliminate this horrible and cruel human behaviour. I am fascinated by the revelation, that bullies are in a sense, victims of their own actions. A Rebecca Fraser-Thill has an article on the long term effects on bullies of their actions, and it seems to me that this information needs to be "put out there" and made known. I refer to this article in a UA-cam video, I believe it may be the one beneath your video actually. I just wanted to offer my heart felt applause to you Dr Ben. My very best wishes. Les Power

      Hi Les,
      Thank you.
I’m less interested in why bullies do it because that takes you down a path focusing on educating, rehabilitating and converting bullies.
I focus first on the targets (not necessarily victims) and how to protect them by stopping the bullies. Even before the bullies learn to change.
There have always been bullies and we will always have bullies. First stop them.
      Best wishes,
      Ben
