    I was stuck on the side of the road with a flat on a highway at 10:30pm. Took the lug nuts off and was very optimistic that I’d be getting home soon. The tire however was stuck. I came across this video, and after watching 30 seconds was told to kick it. I thought, no way would this work. One kick and that bad boy popped right off. Didn’t see the rest of the video, but Eric you made my day and got me home a lot sooner. Thanks!!!

    THANK YOU!!! We blew a tire after hitting a pothole today. We parked our car in a bank parking lot, just beneath a sign that read "Customers Only. All others will be towed. $185 minimum fee." We, of course, couldn't get the tire off. We can home, began looking for possible remedies online, and found THIS video. You just saved us $185. THANK YOU for making and posting this video!

    Wow! Thanks Eric. I've been trying for 2 days to get my aluminum wheel off my RV so I could change the brakes. Karate chops and rubber mallet whacks wouldn't work. Thanks for the insight, Eric. Your tips pointed me directly to my solution!
    I used a variation to fit my scenario - on one crappy standard 'under the seat' jack, on a snowy, mucky street, with very little clearance to swing or feel comfortable swinging under the lifted 1/4 of the car.
    Hopefully it helps someone out:
    While the car was up...
    1. Removed all but one nut and left the remaining on loose (as Eric did.)
    2. Utilizing a 12 pound kettle-bell, standing perpendicular to the tire, I swung the kettle-bell out about 45 degrees and bumped the TIRE ONLY directly lined up with the bolt.
    3. I continued by rotating the tire by quarter turns while taking additional swings at the tire when the bolt lined up.
    At first I heard metal squeaks, and after 5 solid hits the tire popped! Nothing damaged, and car still standing solid.
    I would recommend only using this method when you are on a very flat, solid surface. Clean as much snow as you can from around the working area (it helps!). If it makes you nervous - call for roadside or a friend with gear.

    Thank you so much for this video! I have been changing my own tires for 10 years and I've never had this problem. I didn't have a sledge hammer, but 4 or 5 good hits with a regular hammer did the trick! And all 4 of my wheels were stuck so I got lots of practice. Thanks again for your videos.

    I ran into this situation over the weekend. What worked for me was spraying some wd-40 on any place the rim contacted the lugs and/or brake rotor. Let it sit for a minute and gently tapped around the rim with a dead blow hammer. Didn't damage the wheel and the thing popped right off. Made sure to hit my rotors with some brake cleaner afterwards just to be safe.
    I love these videos, they've made me so much more confident when working on my car.

    Thank you! I’ve kicked it, let wd40 sit in for 30 min, hit the wheel on the outside, and driven the car with lightly loosened lug nuts, and to no avail. I never thought about hitting the inner side of the wheel.... I guess a combo of the wd40 and the sledgehammer, it worked well. I had to hit it a few times, but it worked!!!!! Salted road in upstate New York is not forgiving, but thanks for the tip!!!! Cheers

    Many people think that the wheel sticks to the mount because of the screws and that the wheel is actually riding on them. That is not the case. The screws push the wheel on the surface of the mount and friction is stopping it from moving sideways when the car is driving. The same happens when you push your hand on a surface like a table. The harder you push the stronger the friction force becomes that keeps your hand in place.
    I am just thinking of this because I don't know how smart it is, if you drive around with loose nuts on the wheel, even if it is for just a few seconds/minutes. I have no experience with it but I could imagine that the screws could bend from the pressure.

    • @computername
      @computername 9 років тому

      +pcfreak1992 You can evaluate your theory by going empiric and ask any experienced mechanic about it. For the more scientific approach, calculate the structural safety factor for this situation.
      Both will tell you that it is actually very smart, because applied carefully it does the job without any harm. Trust me, I`m an engineer. And former mechanic :D

    • @pcfreak1992
      @pcfreak1992 9 років тому

      +computername just because nothing happens means it's a smart idea? I actually got this fact from a real engineer who does this kind of stuff for a living. But I mean think of it, if the nuts are loose what should hold the wheel? Exactly, it's the nuts themselves. And when the nuts are tight, the wheel's surface first has to overcome the friction being put on it by the nuts before the wheel will even touch the nuts' threads.

    • @computername
      @computername 9 років тому

      Thats what I meant with "applied carefully". Of course you wouldn`t loosen them completely and do the crazy road rage. You just loosen them slightly to get the initial movement for a stubborn wheel. The wheel itself is still centered on the hub by the central hole so the bolts will only have to withstand any torque, but when you don`t brake or accelerate stupidly, they come out with no damage at all. Yes, you touch the threads and yes, the method is debatable and you can end up with serious damage, but when you do it smooth, it works like a charm. And yes - because nothing happens it`s a smart idea. Thats common sense for me so far.

    Bro i tried everything! and it didn't work. Then i saw your last part of the video with driving it in a parking lot with the lug nuts loose. Worked right away. You saved me so much money and a scary un inspected car ride to the garage. T.Y CAR GUY!!!

    Took it for a spin. Heard it pop, and drove back VERY SLOWLY. I probably could have screwed them a little tighter. No sledge hammer, and it worked! Thanks a million!

    Wowwwwwwwwwwww thx bro . I have been battling this truck tire on my sequoia and I got frustrated and decided to check UA-cam for a ny suggestions. Thank God your video popped up . Loose lug nut trick worked for me on a 93 ram 1500 153k, pretty clean, but rust on hub around that sticks out of rim, and some seafoam penatrant. So Thanks Erick the Car Guy, now I can replace the caliper more easily. The hardest part is behind me.

    I'm so glad I found your video so quickly! I changed my brakes and rotors yesterday and was convinced someone welded my wheel to the hub. One lug nut and a whack with a rubber mallet did the trick. Thanks so much!

    I to had to use the last method the owner of the car had drove till it blew out so I had no tire to hit if that didn't work I was going to try n hit the rim with a rubber mallet to see if it'd knock it lose But fortunately enough it came right off. I didn't do doughnus or anything wild like that I just backed out driverless then 45 seconds turned around and pulled back in lifted and sure enough it was lose, backed off the luggs rim came right off THANKS I've used your videos on a few cars now your great at what you do brother keep it up!!!!

    Great tips. The hammer knock from inside saved my day. After having a flat tire at 5am we got a stuck wheel. Big Prado wheel. We tried everything. 100 kicks, w40, break fluid, heat, hammer... after an hour I just checked youtube and your tips. The hammer from inside looked promising but i didnt have a big one so we used a shovel and bang the wheel got loose.

    Thank you so much for the tip. My son and I just watched this video and since we don't have a hammer we used an axe, obviously the back side of it. One small hit and the tire came loose real easy. Thank you again from Mesa Arizona

    I used the sledge on the outside of the rim, I soaked the wheel contact point with wd40, I used a torch to heat up the contact point, I tried to yank off the wheel with a ratchet strap and my truck......... sledge on the tire worked instantly. Despite feeling emasculated, got the wheel off to plug the tire. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for the info. I have been doing my own brake work since I was 16. I have never had wheels that I couldn't kick or pound off, until today. I worked for 2 hours with no luck. I used your drive with loose lugs method. Fortunately my driveway is slightly higher than my yard. I drove each tire just off the edge of the driveway and steered back and forth. When I lifted the truck, the wheels pulled off easily. THANK YOU

    This video was a godsend! I did a karate kick to the inside of the tire while bracing onto the frame/hooks/bumper and was able to break the tire free from the hub with just one kick. I used this method on all 4 tires and it worked like a charm. Don't forget to use one lug nut to prevent wheel from falling off when you kick it free. I'm glad I watched the entire video to get your preferred method of removal. Thanks for the amazing video!

    I did the trick at the end on a Honda accord once without leaving the lugs on, before I knew I should've left them on, and after pulling the car forward a few feet the wheel almost came completely off (which obviously would've been bad). I had no other option at the time though being stranded with only a short crowbar. I hadn't planned on driving it with the lugs off very far, but it does work in a pinch, just leave the LUGS on like he says at the end :)

    Thanks Eric. Got the first side off by hitting a wooden block with a big hammer around the perimeter of the exterior side of the wheel to rock it back and forth until it loosened up, but I like the sledge on the back of the tire trick way better. Used your method on the other wheel. Took a few good smacks but it worked. I have watched a ton of your videos just for fun, but this time was the one that counted for me.

    Thanks alot. Tried kicking it but didn’t come off. I’m sure that got it started but it didn’t completely remove. So then I put the lugs on by hand, didn’t tighten all the way like you said. Lowered the car and repeatedly reversed back and forth in the driveway. Jacked it up again and it came off like a charm. Thank goodness for the Internet and helpful people

    Thank you so much for the help :) I must confess though, I tried the driving around thing and did'nt feel comfortable getting to far away from my jack, etc. I just drove real fast ( in a straight line) back and forth and hit the brakes HARD. It took about 3 or 4 back and forths, but I got it. What a freaking job that was...but now I know, and now the kids know in stead of coming home for Mommy to fix it. Where are all the good men??? Thanx again :)

    Just wanted to say thanks I know this is an old video. Today had the same issue and recalled your vid from memory. Dropped the car with the slightly loose bolts. Worked like a charm sucked that I had to do the same job for 3 tires. Glad I did not have a flat and needed to use the spare on the highway. Just to cover my butt I used break grease around the hub and mounting points. Then torqued the lug nuts to spec. Many thanks Eric

    I used my brake caliper compressor. I placed a hockey puck on the rotor, then put the foot of the compressor on the puck and the plate on the back of the wheel. Then just tighten the compressor and it pushed the wheel so it came loose. The Wheel needs to have spokes. You are absolutely right about the aluminum and steel. The interface was rust welded on on. I’m going to lightly paint the steel with “Rust Mort” paint to see if that help with the corrosion. Thanks for the Vid. 👍

    I have a flat too, and ended up using section of 2x4 to shield the rim from damage, then banged the 2x4 repeatedly with a small sledge. Still had to wrestle it off, but at least this method gets it un-stuck.
