Another brilliant video mate, winter beach fishing is super tough and your always informative vids, as always, show innovative and productive methods to turn what most may find a dry result into a moisty. Its actually been years since Ive been able to fish an Aussie beach but prior to that I'd spent decades flinging whole ganged pillies a mile on 10kg through ridiculously tiring 13ft telegraph poles resulting in an experience with all the sensitivity of wearing 3 condoms regardless of the glorious setting. I walked past a stand a couple of weeks ago with some 9-10ft, 4-6kg, 2pc rods I would have previously considered impractical but the modern design, silky touch and featherlight weight enticed me to stop and muse. Even though it was my birthday and I was headed to Sussex Inlet the next week I declined to 'bite' however, a decision in hindsight I regret, particularly in light of this incredibly inspiring vid. Once again my friend you have me back at the cashier, chucking bucks with impunity and without a skerrick of regret. Hope to catch you on the sand one day for some comraderie or at least to point out to my wife the dude responsible.
Ha Steve that's my local beach to hopefully as my health improves I should be walking it before Christmas that's my ame so the light gear you use will be on santers list thanks for for the vid helps to keep me motivated.👍👍👍
show's how a short local session at your local can provide a great enjoyable time plus fresh dinner protein, well done. have bought two vanfords for this sort of fishing a little south of you near bermi. beautiful nature we can enjoy
@@1MauricioGarcia Hi! It’s on the far south coast of the state of NSW, about four to five hours drive south of Sydney and two to three hours drive north of the border with the state of Victoria.
I used to fill the kids socks with tuna oil & chopped up mulies, and get them to stand in the shore break, to attract the fish. Now the lil bugga’s are grown up they refuse to play the game any more. Time to start training the grandkids I think! 😜😂😂👍
Great video, brought back fond memories of my best ever surf fish!! Also in the dying moments of light, and also on a Catana (slightly heavier 9 foot one w 20lb fluoro leader and a 1/0). Very similar battle but mine took me about 200m along the beach. Leader popped at a wind knot as I dragged it out of the suds. That sambo was 78cm on the bragmat (maybe 5kg?). A memory I’ll always treasure. Was a very wet time reviving it, but worth it to watch it swim majestically away.
It’s been thirty years since I’ve seen those trees on the headland in the flesh, it always makes me homesick for the fishing down there. Great session and video Steve as always. 👍🏻
What about those days when there are decent bites continuously but no hook ups? Go the next day and 3 out of 5 bites get hooked. Is it the mood of the fish? Is there anything else you can do? I've tried different bait/hook sizes, different types of hooks, different ways of putting the bait on and also letting them run with the bait without any tightness in the line but on those days it doesn't seem to make a difference what I do. I generally use Gamakatsu circle hooks, generally using pilchard because that gets the most bites this season. Cheers.
In my experience, when you’re missing a lot of bites they are generally smaller fish with small mouths. Especially whiting, mullet and bream. You can either down-size your hooks and baits… or wait for something bigger to come along.
Also Dart are a very common pest of larger pilchard baits, Sydney and northwards. Put on a long shank mustad size 4 or 6 and it can be great fun catching several in quick succession.
Brilliant episode Steve & Jo, some helpful tips & just love this type of fishing & a nice feed to take home. We have some similar beaches on the Yorke Peninsula where I live so you might’ve motivated me to go out & throw a line again 🎣
Amazing to see mate I absolutely love how you and your wife a absolutely love sharing this amazing sport and past time of all the content about fishing available I have learned and taken away the most from your Chanel thanks for the amazing effort mate I wish you and your family tight lines forever
I do spell it out in the video, but you might have missed it: Shimano Catana Light Surf/Coastline Light rod, 2500 or 3000 Vanford reel, 8 to 10 pound Kairiki braid and 10 to 12 pound fluorocarbon leaders (Ocea FC).
If I was in Oz I would buy you a coffee .. your vids Def worth it. But paying in Rand's it's not so easy. But you have a place to stay in cape town for a few nights if you need it..
I run 8 or 10 pound Kairiki braid as my main line and about a rod length of leader all up, usually 12 or 16 pound Ocea Fluourocarbon. The sinker runs to a swivel about 40cm back from the hook or hooks. I like to run a pair of 1/0 hooks when fishing with half a pilchard.
@@tedjames2534 no. He speaks as if he's a reasonable teacher/instructor with something valuable to offer... and a fair few people seem to agree, judging by the comments and feedback here. Australian salmon and thai fish cakes.
Yep.

you are the best Starlo I haven't gone fishing since the winter started but I am lure fisho though never using baits
You should!
Great way to spend a winters arvo, one of my favourite ways to get some exercise too.
Couldn't agree more!
You’ll loose a bit of weight fishing like that too 😂😂
Not working so far! ;)
The closest thing of going to beach fishing is to watch Starlo's video. Thanks Starlo!!!!
Enjoy!

My first fish as a kid was a whiting from the beach in NQ. 12lb mono no braid in those days.🤠🎣
Good stuff.
Hey Starlo, nice work mate! Is that Vanford a 2500 size?
Thanks! I use both a 2500 and a 3000 Vanford on that rod. Either is fine.

Just a pair of hooks with top one snelled to the leader.
