  • Here is a rare short film from 1935 featuring Charlie Kunz and his band with guest star Teddy Brown. This is part of a series of 9.5 mm sound films that Pathescope Ltd released in 1938 for the 'home movie' market.
    Sorry about the poor quality of the film (and the soundtrack). The original soundtrack was out of sync - I have tried to correct this and even though it still isn't perfectly synchronised, it is much better than it was.
    The film has a charming amateurish look to it, though to be fair the budget constraints would have curtailed a lavish Hollywood production! Poor old Teddy Brown looks like he's waiting for a bus in-between his percussive peregrinations up and down the xylophone, though I do like the brief second or two when he turns towards the band and starts to move his body in rhythmic sympathy with the music - at 9:47 - that must have set the joint (and joists) jumping!
    Vocalist George Barclay must surely be related to the late Sir Robin Day - the similarity is uncanny! I like his singing very much (Barclay's I mean!).
    How many tunes can you name?

    Sequentially (bar one marked with a question mark) the tunes are : 'Clap hands here comes Charley', 'Around and About' (with vocal), 'Dancing with my Shadow' (with Teddy Brown xylophone), then with Charlie Kunz on piano, 'I Don't know Why', 'Everything I Have is Yours', 'Miss Annabelle Lee', ? , 'Walking in a Winter Wonderland' (with Teddy Brown), 'Side by Side', 'I can't give you anything but love', 'You're in Kentucky as sure as your Born'.

      Thanks for the listing. The one you have a question mark against is "Pink Elephants'. I didn't recognise "Dancing With My Shadow" or "I Don't Know Why", and the tune that starts at 10:32 hasn't been identified.

    What a wonderful and priceless film! I love any short with "Little" Teddy Brown in it! He's beyond talented and such a wonderful showman as well! He makes playing the xylophone seem so effortless. It's sad to know that at 35 he only has 11 more years to live. His early death must have been related to his weight. I envied my parents, born in 1898 and 1902, that they got to experience this wonderful period as young adults. My father used to sing things like Side By Side and My Blue Heaven as we rode along in the 50's.

      Thanks very much for your comment and especially for your personal reminiscences about your parents. Amazing to consider that one of your parents was alive when Queen Victoria was on the throne! Yes, I guess Teddy Brown's considerable weight didn't help his health much! But of course the average life span back in those days was much lower than it is now, though with the way things are going the difference may be reduced somewhat, sadly.

    What a treat this is, Charlie Kunz is one of the best pianists of all time (in my humble opinion) love his style and musicianship. Then to hear Teddy Brown playing on some numbers is just icing on the cake. His very inventive variations on a tune are quite remarkable, and he plays with seemingly great ease. This video is an absolute gem. many thanks Nick Dellow for uploading it.

      I've heard BBC continuity announcers announce Reg Dixon at the "Charlie Kunz of the Organ" and he was. Charlie was absolutely fantastic, with absolute control over everything the piano did. It's not easy at all to play like Charlie did.

      It isn't Max Goldberg - I guess that's who you mean when you say "Goldie". Goldberg was a member of the Ambrose Orchestra at the time. The trumpets in Charlie Kunz's band at this date (1935) were Tich Charlton and John Murphy.

      @@nickdellow6073 Thanks Nick , I think you may agree there is bit of a likeness at least..........see at about 7.56 . Keep 'em coming - Iain p/s I think there is a track or two where Al Bowlly refers to Max as " Goldie" in his vocal .

    • @nickdellow6073
      @nickdellow6073  4 роки тому

      @@iainr222 He definitely doesn't have Goldberg's nose! In any case, I cannot see how Max Goldberg, who was a member of the Ambrose band at the time, would land up in Charlie Kunz's band, which he was never a member of, even if it were only to make this film. Even if it were possible, he doesn't solo so it would have been pointless (and expensive) to hire him for the film. (Al Bowlly calls Goldberg "Goldie" in Ray Noble's "Shout For Happiness").
