Fun fact: out of all the Disney princesses (and queens) Ariel is the only princess to have a child! It strikes me how many sequels to animated movies are about the protagonist of the first movie repeating their parents mistakes. The recent sequel to Chicken Run, Dawn of the Nugget has the same premise ‘young girl wants to leave over protective mother and see the world the mother fears, because of what went down in the original.’
This is definitely one of the better Disney renaissance sequels made for direct to video. I remember I had Return of Jaffa on vhs and it was terrible but I loved it 😂
Little Mermaid 2 is the one I grew up watching the most because I had it on tape at the time along with a few other movies and would put it on whenever I felt like it. I wouldn't be to worried about the shark losing his teeth. Sharks have like six or seven sets of teeth, so provided he didn't die, a new set would grow back in a few weeks.
I know I watched at least part of this as a kid (maybe in a waiting room somewhere?) But I remembered pretty much nond of it. Glad for the refresher. I wont have thought to return to it without this. Thank you.
Ahhh my favorite direct to video sequel so many fond memories. I know this movie gets some flak for "telling the same story as the first but reversed" but in the sequel's defense, there are quite a few story beats that have solid logic to them. For starters even when Ariel was turned into a human she clearly retained some of her mermaid traits that were passed down to Melody (ability to communicate and understand sea creatures, can dive to deeper depths than is possible for the time period, able to hold her breath longer than most). Now the beginning of the movie never states how much time has passed since the first but to make an educated guess I don't think it's been too long since the first. So I'd say Ariel is 17 maybe 18 at the most so she's a new young mom and then she suddenly has her baby literally ripped from her arms and threatened to be fed to a shark. That's pretty traumatizing for a new parent. This also kind of reflects a theme I've noticed throughout the little mermaid sequels, the cycle of generational trauma. Let's review, Triton was a lot calmer and relaxed when his wife was alive, but she was brutally killed by careless human cruelty. And in his grief and fear for his children's safety he overcorrected and enforced strict rules to "keep them safe" but all it does is make his family miserable and drive them apart. Ariel's interest in the human world would never be accepted by Triton so of course she felt isolated and alone. But now Ariel is the parent who had their child's life threatened, she didn't have her mother growing up. The only parent she had that was an example to draw on was her emotionally closed off hot tempered overprotective father. Of course Ariel would perpetuate similar patterns if she doesn't know any other way. Melody's interest in the sea is innate, it calls to her because it's in her blood and to be denied that part of her identity and heritage is pretty awful. Ariel knows this but she doesn't want to scare her daughter that oh hey there's a sea witch who wants you dead so don't go in the ocean. How do you tell a little girl that and not scar her for life? Still Ariel unfortunately creates emotional distance between her and Melody because she overcorrected as a trauma response to her daughter's safety. Melody feels out of place and that she doesn't belong but Ariel isn't seeing this as a 16 year old longing for freedom but as a 30 something mom and queen. Plus Melody is 12 kids that young are sadly very easy to manipulate. That's why I especially love the ending it's Melody actively breaking the cycle. She's reuniting the two worlds bringing her family together and accepting both sides of herself human and mermaid. There's no more secrets or danger they can now finally be free to talk and express themselves. In essence, the little mermaid movies are about a family learning to heal and move on from trauma-based patterns of behavior and parents learning to let go of their fears and biases to let their kids be free and happy. Which I think is a good message. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Melody is kinda like Percy Jackson (whose is her half great uncle). They both are half bloods, related to gods and each other, and can hold their breath for a long time.
The bit about the wrinkly skin: apparently that is actually an adaptation in humans that is supposed to help with grip in wet environments so it's possible Mermaids just have it all the time.
I'm fairly sure I saw this one before the original also, because it was on VHS in the late 90s early 2000s when I was just starting school. I really preferred the whole "mother and daughter who don't communicate or understand each other" plot line, it just seemed more relatable than a daughter defying a father who ruled with an iron fist. I think I also liked more that Melody's love of the sea doesn't become entwined with interest in a boy like Ariel's story did. I think them setting her as only 12 helps with that a bit (not that twelvies can't be boy-crazy) but it made more sense for 15 year old Ariel to be like, "I want to see the human world, but also hey, look at this human guy!"
Heeey, me too! Got this VHS a little before starting school. Haha, I'm with you on the rest. I think I like both versions, but I do cherish the second one more - Maria

I have always been confused about Morgana. Ursula was originally a mermaid before half octopus and triton is Ursula’s brother so… how are Morgana and Ursula related?
Both Triton and Ursula and Morgana are all related because they are the children of Posiedon and he had an affair with a female octopus since in real life he would have many affairs but you have to think about biology on who would inherit what from who Triton must have inherited posiedon's form and Ursula and Morgana have their mothers form Triton hated humans before his wife died and Ursula was banished because she supposedly showed up to the feast there even though Triton told her not to go because he didn't want the merfolk too be alarmed of her Octopus look but she showed and he got very angry at her and cast her out then she started too do her deals and black magic then she was banished then that's where the revenge came into play. Now with Morgana I don't know how her hatred of Triton came to be but in my theory in the first little mermaid movie of course you don't see Morgana at all but she has a glowing orb so I'm guessing how she found out about Ursulas death is because she saw it through her orb. I think she still cares for Ursula since she said that she wants to avenge her but mostly she wanted to make her mother proud. I'm guessing if Morgana ever melted out that ice she would be out for revenge big time mainly mostly on Melody
So I watched TLM properties totally out of order (an unintentional habit of mine). The series, TLM II, and then the first movie. So when I was 11 after seeing Ariel be so much fun in the series it really upset me to see Ariel act like Triton and want nothing to do with the sea. Rewatching it after college, it made more sense because most people don’t think they’re capable of repeating toxic family cycles and then of course they do. Because Triton and later Ariel choose to be controlling (because they’re genuinely afraid) instead of being honest and listening Ariel and later Melody end up trusting the people who pose the biggest threat to them.
