Thanks for this useful and helpful video, Raymond. I have just taken delivery of the Z mount 2x TC and have had the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S Lens for a month or so. The latter is outstanding, but the 2x TC has just taken it to a different league, in my opinion. Terrific additions to the lens "arsenal" and easy to use in the field. They're paired with a Z6 ii, which itself is a great camera. I dare not look at any Z9 reviews.....
Great comparison. Thanks so much for your work. I'm really impressed with both the lenses with the 2X teleconverters. I think the main difference I see is that the newer Z mount version has better, more vibrant colors. Both look excellent though. I think the F mount 2X gets some unwarranted bad reviews. I've used it on both a Nikon 300mm f2.8 G VR ii and the 500mm PF f5.6 and have been very impressed with the quality. I think it helps a lot using a proper support like a tripod or monopod to really get the most out of the 2X.
Hello very good video, I would like to ask a question I bought the z6 lll and I have the telephoto lens 200-500 Nikon and the 28-300 Nikon and I want to buy a TC but I don't know if from the z series or the other F series and if they would be compatible with these two lenses Thank you!
Hello Ray, I was also on the fence regarding the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6S lens, initially because I’m not a fan of variable aperture lenses, but I preordered the lens and received it a week before my Z9 on December 17th (my Z9 on 23rd December). I’ve already used this combination together with the 1.4x Z-mount TC, and I’ve been really impressed with the image quality. So you get 560mm at the long end with an aperture of f/8 which isn’t too bad. I haven’t tried it with the 2.0x TC (which I also own), but Matt Grainger has mad some tests with this combination and has been very impressed with the results.
Thanks, Raymond! Having owned the previous F-mount 70-200, I've had the same results you show in this video. In the old days, I wouldn't have used the 2X teleconverter, but with the Z system, I took a chance and purchased it. On my Z-mount 70-200 f/2.8, the results are quite good on my Z6II and Z7. I have hopes that with the improved focusing system of the Z9, (whenever I get mine...) that it will work even better. I'm also interested in the 100-400, as the longer focal lengths are probably out of my budget, at least for a while. Take care! :)
Yes, the Z teleconverter is on a different level than previous iterations for sure; it’s pretty obvious in this video. I’m also eager to attach this combo to the Z9!
So glad you are doing this Raymond. I do Wild Life here in Africa >> 71 yrs old and have the Z7 and 70-200 f2.8 S plus 1.4 Z convertor = 280 mm f4 but I need more obviously >> Easy get the new 100-400 . However I cant afford both the 70-200 AND the 100-400 especially that I am saving for the Z9 my LAST ever Nikon camera So alternative get the 2x S Convertor
Slightly different angle: I’m an amateur and I moved from D750 to Z6 when arthritis started to appear in the fingers of my right hand so weight was an issue. I have the Z 70-200 and it’s wonderful but didn’t want to buy the 100-400 as I didn’t fancy carrying both around with me. Other reviewers have put me off teleconverters but from what you’re saying the Z 2x telecon will be a good option for me if the IQ loss is so minimal. Thank you.
I read all the negative reviews about teleconverters a decade ago, before springing for theTC- 20EIII. Much will depend on the lens used in conjunction. The stills I included in this video speak to quality, I think -- for better or worse. I've been fairly satisfied. Nevertheless, the Z version -- both TC and lenses -- are a bit improvement.
I'm the same on the 100-400mm. It has some appeal, but I've already got the 70-200mm s and 2.0x and the 500mm pf. The 400mm with tc is cool, but how do you get to 800? Will it additionally take a tc? Lots of questions that I hope will be answered soon by Nikon. I've got the Z9 and have been barely playing with it, due to our sunless winter skies here in northern Michigan. It's driving me crazy...
@@RaymondParkerPhoto I love the 500, so that's right there, as well. I want to use what I've got, but I'm loving the image quality the new lenses are promising.
In my case, Geoffrey, it's age-related. But, seriously, from what I've seen and heard, the new Z 1.4 TC has no detectable effect on IQ. I don't see much difference with the 2.0x either ... but that might have something to do with deteriorating eyesight! 😀
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Hi Raymond, yes I was just having a laugh about that IQ reference you made. Was there a conclusion on the old F-mount TC in the video, or did I miss something?
Thank you for the info. I have been wanting to add to my lens collection now, but the mirrorless revolution put the screws to it. I hate to spend any serious money on f-mount glass, and Nikon really hasn't made the camera yet that I want although the Z9 now proves that they can and likely will in the future. However, Nikon does seem to make a better enthusiast level set of options for long lenses. It will be interesting to see an image quality test between the 70-200 + TC and the 100-400. The 400 f2.8 has my interest as well, but cost and weight may put that one out of reach. I currently shoot with the D500 and 500 pf. I want to add something a little shorter in focal length with a larger aperature for dusk and dawn shots. Current thoughts are the Z6ii, 24-120 and 100-400.
I think it's been shown that the 100-400 is superior to the 70-200 w/ TC. And, of course, with the TC 2.0 or 1.4, the 100-400 is ready for those tiny birds.
Of course one should be aware that the newer 70-200mm Af-s FL was much better than the version II ! But of course the new Z mount is just even better I guess and the TC 2.0 Z is clearly above ! I guess your estimation system needs to calibrated ( 4.. 5 meters .... -- oh no -- it was 8 ! ) P.S. must have been quite chilly in that studio 😆🤣
Cheers! As I say in this video (ua-cam.com/video/TIrZmmlcLlo/v-deo.html) I might not have upgraded if I had the FL. But glad I did. In particular, the TCs (I have both the Z 1.4x and 2x now) are far superior to the F-mount. Yep, winter in my garage/studio, even with the heater, is a bit on the chilly side! 😀 In this case I rushed in cold, so to speak, without warming it up.
Good information planning to do same when z9 arrives. Great production value - as always. Couldn’t help notice your outfit remained the same in the studio - hopefully you heat the set. Keep up the great work. Thanks
Sorry, I was very disappointed. You said this video was a "comparison" and I kept waiting to see some comparison shots but, unless I blinked, I didn't see any!!
Do you use or are you contemplating using a teleconverter? What's your experience?

Brilliant Raymond. Thank you 🙏 Informative and captivating. Thorough. You got a subscriber
Glad to hear you found it useful. Welcome aboard!
Always excellent video and informative. Belated happy new year 🎉 from Ireland 🇮🇪

💯 I'm an enthusiastic tripod/monopod user, whenever possible. The F-mount AF-S TC-20E III is decent. I still have mine.

The lenses you mention are F-mount, accordingly they require F-mount TCs.

It is very tempting at the price. The only bugbear is that f/11. Since low-light capabilities are improved today, it might just be worth it.

Thanks, Jon! It takes a while to heat up the studio/garage. Without an hour or two lead time, as we Brits say, it's "like a barn."

All through the video there are clips made with the F-mount and Z-mount and labelled. You must have blinked.
are you using sony? oh god, no! 😂
great comparisson video 👍
LOL 😅 Yup, best question of the day!
