Ugh, its because he has to speak over that awful background music! One of the things I loved the most watching Motorweek as a kid is that it was just him talking about the car. Now they try to jazz it up with stupid royalty free music in the background for no reason! It makes me want to pull my hair out!

Joseph Rogers This was one of those retro fad cars like the new Beetle, but the PT Cruiser's looks simply didn't age well - the Beetle looked inoffensive enough to become somewhat bland but the looks of the PT Cruiser really started to turn people off, once the fad was over.

Our Convertible is dressed out like a '50s Hot Rod with dual exhaust, 2 tone paint, lake pipes, "full Moon" wheel covers, 1950s pin-striping, etc. Lots of looks, smiles and "thumbs up" wherever we go.

These things have become punchlines now, but people either forget, or aren't old enough to remember, how hugely popular and successful they were when they first came out. Whatever you think about them, you have to give credit to Chrysler for taking such a big risk with that kind of unconventional styling. And for all the crazy retro looks, they were still incredibly practical and decently economical. Still, when I got stuck with one as a rental car a few years ago, I was kind of embarrassed and felt the need to immediately tell everybody it was a rental. And yeah, the interior was Fischer-Price plastic fantastic, and it felt generally cheap and flimsy.

Give it a few years.... Disco was a joke until the nostalgia/retro-wave for the 70's hit in the mid-90's. Then, suddenly having original copies of Village People and KISS albums, as well as bell bottoms, were a huge thing that carried through into the 2000's and beyond... especially the pants cuff thing.😉

It's popular to piss on the PT Cruiser, but this thing kept 100,000s of assholes out of gas guzzling, dangerous SUVs while offering alot of the same versatility, better road manners and much better fuel efficiency. I think the looks have even gasp aged alright. It's a little like the Scion XB in almost every way when I think about it, a practical, compact people mover with the ability to fold everything down and move shit, all wrapped up in a avant-garde styling package meant to make it seem flashier than its underpinnings.

Absolutely loved this car. Had 4 of them and all ran great but in NY, the salt in the winter slowly kills them. As with any car actually.
1st- 2001 Limited Edition (Junked in 2016 for rust and Blown Head Gasket at 280,000 miles)
2nd- 2001 Touring (Also junked in 2016 for Rust, Blown Head Gasket, slipping transmission and a bad exhaust valve 320,000 Miles )
3rd- 2009 GT (Owned 6 months before being totaled by someone who didn't know how to drive in snow. She went to fast, lost control, and hit me dead on and totaled the car. 2,151 miles)
4th- LX Base Model (Still currently own bought used from Tennessee, currently with 112,000 miles on it)
Never had any major issues with the PT's until the inevitable end where the repairs outweighed the value of the car and intensity of the rust. MPG was not bad in all of them. 22-24mpg on average wasn;t bad for a bvehicle with an underpowered engine that weighed 3300-3500lbs in those years. If they still made them with the engines they have now, 30 would be where it'd be at.
Personally, I'll buy the PT's until I could not find anymore. If I could buy one Brand new from the factory, I would. No matter the cost.
The PT Cruiser was the best selling car they made (at the time) and would still be if they still made it. I'd put money on it that it would outsell the 200 and 300's if they were still made or possibly brought back.

ahhh the PT. The same guy that designed these went to GM and designed the HHR. The HHR was based in design off of the 1949-51 suburban. You either love these or hate them. I had a 2008 HHR SS. basically a cobalt ss (same chassis drive train ect.). That thing upset a few guys on the highway on ramp. Great sleeper. But interior quality was below sub par if that's possible. Hard plastic as far as the eye could see.

Its amazing how quickly this car went from being the hottest thing ever to a loser mobile in less than 5 years. IMO these things never were cool, it was what your boss's 47 year old secretary named Debbie bought as a mid-life crisis car back in the early 00's.
I will give it credit though, the PT Cruiser was way ahead of its time in terms of packaging. 4 years before the Scion xB came out, 3 years before the Honda Element, 10 years before the now ubiquitous Kia Soul.

Even after five years, it was still doing well enough that GM recruited its designer to come over and draw one up for their Chevrolet division.
Coming to the party that long after it had started, however, kept the HHR from doing as well as the "Petey" did..

I remember our next door neighbor's dad bought one of these to replace his GMC Jimmy and people were literally flocking around it. In hindsight, I think this was Chrysler's last really big hit. The 300 has been popular over its lifecycle but it never had quite the fanatical following that this car had.

  • @Michael_Page

I like it. If I ever found a well kept manual for a decent price, I'd get one. I'll never understand how this car came to be considered bad. 1 1/3 million sold in 10 years. MT Car of the year, 10 Best, NA car of the year and many other awards. And most people don't know that to the EPA it was a truck because the seats came out. Helping Chrysler with the CAFE. And it sure lasted longer than most of the other 'retros' from the early 2000s. And GM copied it. It was also Chryslers highest ranked car in owner satisfaction. It probably helped Daimler to build the 300/Charger with the profits. So all-in-all it was a absolute success and made a lot of people happy. There are more than 100 for sale near me, and still command 10k for a 2010. What more could you ask for?

+kennedy796 I can agree there. Chevy's Ecotec Engine would have been a great Engine for that car. SShame that Chrysler is still using the 2.4 in their cars. You'd think they'd make a new, better and more efficient motor than the 2.4. Ah well. Hate to say this but I do not see Chrysler being around all too much longer. After re-watching nearly all the retro reviews, I've found two keys things:
    1. Despite how bad a car maybe, they always wrap on a good note. "Sure the car doesn't handle or brake well, but if you like sitting while driving, this is the car for you!"
    2. Playing these at either half-speed or double-speed is AMAZINGLY HILARIOUS! Bonus points for switching speeds to half during braking discussion, double during acceleration.

Typical for Chrysler, the PT Cruiser was a brilliant product that became a victim of its own "rightness." Insanely popular - and for good reason - the car eventually became a staple on the bucket list of the hopeful uncool. Once school teachers, suburban housewives and Funky Winkerbean became owners, the self-anointed arbiters of cool declared PTs beneath consideration. Ultimately, big-mouthed "car guys" - ironically nothing more than street-corner popularity consultants aching to be perceived as cool themselves - piled on, untruly trashing everything from the PT's reliability to its fuel mileage. Just like the bullies in high school who mercilessly trashed the looks, intelligence and associations of the nice girl that all the teachers liked, these big mouths simply want the world to realize that they are too cool for a car their Mom would love to own

I heard it all the time. Nice PT Loser. I had a 2005 and put over 174K on it. It was a GREAT car. It only started costing me repair money once it topped 150K. I had the Limited and on more than one occasion, I had it WELL over the legal limit...topping 130 in it and mine wasn't even the turbo. It handled like a charm. At 108, you could feel the suspenion pull back, lower and go nose down as the roar underneath deepened to some base thunder. I only got rid of it because repairs were going to cost more than it was worth. I loved that car, though, "uncool" as it was. But driving like I mentioned, I can't own or drive "cool" and keep my license. Radar a PT at 130 and the officer is going to look at his radar and think its broken...never expecting it to do that speed. I had the misfortune of an accident in it as well...one of those "the guy 5 or 6 cars ahead isn't paying attention and everyone behind slams on their breaks to avoid hitting him moments." I completely tore the rear hatch off a brand new Nissan mini van, shoved her into the truck in front of her. He van ended up totalled and my PT drove away. The only repair I had to do was replace the radiator as the t-bar support for the grill poked a small hole in it and we couldn't get it to stop. Legal disclaimer...all these facts are made up...or are they?

No, I have not owned any other car other than PT Cruisers. Driven others yes, but not owned others. You get the best of all worlds with this car. Looks, comfort, gas mileage, luggage, versatility, and great in snow. (never been stuck in snow yet after 9yrs of driving. Yes, bought the 01 used for $3,000 with 60k in 06. Loved it, so bought the GT in 09 New, and changed the GT's tranny in 2010. Drives much better and a bit faster) To any looking to buy a used car for a good price and good reliability, get a PT Cruiser.

I was fortunate to have the best father-in-law in the world! I helped choose order and take delivery of the candy apple red limited 1st year P/T. He bought it as a gift for my mother-in-law and they waited 6months for the factory to build it. They went everywhere in it til Gma was reaerended and it was totaled. It was pristine with only 20,000 miles on her in 2019 when she was hit. Beautiful car. I just picked up a beat up 2007 HHR and restored it so she is awesome now and I too love it. Reminds me of Tim the beat man ever. Thanks motorweek and thanks Chrysler

Fiat 500 series vehicles are modern day Chrysler PT Cruisers, except that it comes in different forms. Now that the warranty is reduced to 60,000 miles for all Chrysler vehicles, except Fiat, the CEO of FCA doesn't have confidence that the vehicles would last long. It will blow the doors off any other compact in its class. 2.4 twin cam, tuning potential unlimited. John even says so in the video. Chrysler made the neon and pt for tuning. Independent suspension, not like every other compact of the era that had torsion beam suspension. Only haters will hate.

Its interesting to see how many reviews they lauded praise over that turned out to be both terrible in terms of reliability and simply were unpopular sales failures One wonders at times if some reviews are intentionally spun positively to avoid angering manufacturers that might otherwise deny them access to test vehicles.

They probably would still be around today, just as popular, if Chrysler was smarter about updating the design over the years. I get it’s tough to refresh a retro look, but VW was able to do it with the Beetle. (Perhaps not the best example because the Beetle’s popularity waned, but that could be more of a practicality issue since people are buying more crossovers and less coupes/convertibles. The PT Cruiser could’ve been immune due to its design)
