- Trying out the Palmer Pletsch system, is it worth it for Izzy and I? In this video follow me as I battle the pattern to work out what I have to do. I LOVE the Big 4 patterns but have never attempted this one properly. Did it make a difference?

Both tops look good - I have the same problem with the lines. Still learning fitting. Just recently made a Pattern Emporium (sleeveless) and had to petite the armhole. Pamela’s Patterns have this technique on her patterns and it does help.

I tried the p&p pattern tissue fit dress absolutely disaster I put straight in the bin. Joy does have great faith in p&p doesn’t she but she always uses a 3way mirror maybe that’s the trick for fitting. Lovely content Carole 😊

Now that is a lovely thing to say and if only it were true 😂😘. I look around though and so many people wear ill fitting bought T shirts so why do I worry?! Joanne you hit the nail on the head when you said we want a better fit than ready made! If I look around at people in T shirts I NEVER see one that isn't lined or stretched. I don't have any bought ones anymore so I can't judge from my own. I have watched Joy on and off for years and she is such a fantastic seamstress. None of this means I won't still wear the ones I have made though it was just a fun experiment to do with Izzy. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and watch 🧵😊

That we sometimes notice only need full bust adjustment but narrow shoulders, sway back and the size of arms eye makes such a difference

I have watched Joy for years on and off and yes, a bust dart if I really wanted the perfect fit would be the way to go. If I was sewing a really small flowered print or something then I might consider it but no way on a stripe! Thanks so much for being kind about the tops I did make, it was a fun thing to try anyway 🧵😊
Really interesting. Thoroughly recommend the Palmer Plesch fitting book. I’ve managed, with some effort, to fit woven tops which has much improved the wearability of the tops and dresses I make.

Thank you so much for sharing how you actually tried on the tissue paper. I didn’t even try it that way because I knew how difficult it would be by myself. I’m really impressed with the fit you managed to get on both tops to be honest. And now that you mentioned it, if you play around with the armscye, it might make the few lines that remain go away!! I loved playing along with you on this. I’m not writing off Big 4 patterns completely just yet… but I won’t be attempting another knit pattern. Xx 💞

Great collaboration with Izzy! I have watched your channel for a while but have never commented, always enjoy listening to you and seeing what you are making. This was so interesting for such a simple t-shirt it was allot of adjustments. I have used the Palmer & Pletch tissue fit on many patterns and have had great success. I agree that it’s best to have a sewing buddy, usually my husband.I find sewing with knits is always interesting as you can use the same pattern and a slightly different knit and they come out so different just when you think you have it figured out. Wanted to mention I use the cardigan Kwik Sew pattern that you use all the time. I have made it with the hood for casual and the tapered for nice sweater knits. Always a success with that one. As you say, even though I thought the fabric was the same it obviously wasn't or that V made a difference. LOVE this collab! I am making this exact top Right now! I did pin the tissue and I also think it is a whole Lotta work to go through and I noticed the armscye feels tight with the tissue fitting but yet that is not addressed in the instructions on how to adjust the armscye? I was at that point where they said you could get away without the FBA, so I skipped it. I’m about to try it on we’ll see how it goes…… thank you so much for sharing how you did this and it was so funny to hear you mention joy because I think that’s where I first saw her do the whole method in a video. I think all of your tops came out fabulous especially that V-neck.❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Mary... so much effect for just a T shirt isn't it! I can't believe you are making it at the same time. You are right, there was no mention of the armscye at all and it is TIGHT! Hope you didn't have to do an FBA but to be honest that was the easy bit. The V neck was the best one and I will keep that pattern for future use. Oh Miss Lorraine you make me blush 🥰. That P and P system is SO much effort, especially for a T shirt and I can see why so many people just make it up like normal patterns! I think your wheel inspired me last week as I had to clean the fridge too 😂, that meant of course that little bits of chocolate that I keep in there just had to be eaten 😉. Good video, Carole! Well done and nice to see your tissue fitting process and pattern adjustments. Sewing is a constant learning process, there's no getting around that. All one can do is to embrace the lessons learned. Your darker top came out very well and I agree that the PP method made an improvement. Your striped top: My suggestion: Re-work the neckline into a V-neck, to see if that takes care of (some) lines and, hopefully, make the fit better. If there are lines on your print top (there might be a few), they are hardly noticeable. The busier the print, the less noticeable as people will be admiring the print and distracted from seeing the lines. Generally, I don't see "lines" unless they are pointed out. I'm just looking at the overall garment and fabric, as I'm sure most of your viewers are too. If you decide to do a video on the arm syce adjustment, I'd sure love to see it. Thanks so much Dori for all your tips and kind comments. It is funny, I am wearing a V neck t shirt today I made from a New Look pattern, a straight size 10 and it is fine!! Go figure 😂. I need to stop worrying I think as I was looking around the other day at people in T shirts, they were all pulling and gaping! I am going to keep the striped top as it is but that that was a great suggestion of yours to turn into a V as I really wonder if that was what made the difference. Fitting is my least favorite part of sewing. But the cool thing about spending the time getting a great fit is that you can use that same pattern over and over again. Just change the sleeve length or even sleeve details, the neck (v-neck, round neck, etc.) and you have many different looking t-shirts. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
You are right Carol, once you do master the perfect fit that pattern becomes like gold! However I have learnt in the past like this time, different fabrics can make a huge difference even if you think they are the same. Thanks so much for watching 🧵😊

Thanks for doing this video. I really like the V neck on you and the Breton T is a classic that is very hot right now. I have used this Palmer Pletch method twice now and have had some success with it. It makes me think I should use it any time I am making a close fitting garment like a blouse or pants. May I suggest you go up one size with this pattern. This should give you the room you need in the arm scye and hips. You can always grade in at the waste if need be. Also, it helps if you draw a verticle line in the centre front and back of your tank top with frxion marker. This will help to visualize that distance of where the pattern piece is hitting you relative to that line. You are right, it’s a little challenging to do without a helper, especially when trying to visualize the back. Also, when you look from the side you want to ensure that line directs the body right in the middle the entire length of your torso. I would challenge you to revisit this pattern fitting technique for a woven pattern.
Yay I am up with a trend! Thanks for telling me that and your really kind comments. Interesting to hear you have had success with this system and I am sure it is good just a lot of bother for a T shirt. Someone else mentioned about going up a size but then I know that the shoulders would need adjustment as I have narrow shoulders. That's exactly how we made our pattern fits in a Palmer/Pletsch fitting class I took -- we pinned the pattern together and put it on. You know how thin the pattern paper is? Talk about rips!! But the top made did turn out to be a really good fit. Can you imagine doing that sort of fit on every single top pattern you work with?

Congratulations on a great fitting T-shirt! It looks great on. I think the arm hole is too high, also. Jennifer has a bunch of fitting episodes, some tackle that very problem. I’ve tried Palmer & Pletch, and you’re right, you need another pair of hands. I tried to get my husband to help me one time, and it was a disaster! The best fitting videos I’ve found is from Nancy Zieman, she was the best at it. Her system is much easier to do. Don’t give up, you’ll get it. Have a great weekend! Off to watch Izzy now.😃

Thanks Sue, the armholes are too high and to be honest lots of the T shirts I have made before have the same issue it is just I have never noticed it! I have watched a couple of Nancy's videos since then and she had another lady on talking about lines on T shirts and yet both of them were wearing ill fitting T shirts 😂. I think both your shirts turned out very well, although I understand you might not be as happy with the striped one because you wanted no drag lines at all - but it looks pretty good from here! I have that pattern - opened it up once, saw all the things involved with making it and stuffed everything back in the envelope - yes, I'm a lazy coward, LOL!

In the 60’s and 70’s my mom and grandma made most of my clothing. Tissue fitting was all they did. Until I started watching u-tube sewing videos, I had no idea how much everyone goes through for a good fit. It does seem nice to have something you love to wear and not just something to wear!

Fantastic video. Palmer and Pletch do a fitting book/guide which I bought from SewEssential. It is extremely complex so I haven’t taken on board all the finer points, however my understanding is that any adjustments should be made in a particular order which I believe is top down middle out. This would mean making sure that the arm hole and waist are in the right place before making any FBA etc. Hope this helps. Lovely v neck T-shirt regardless! Best wishes

Hi, Carole, since the pattern tissue was about an inch off in the front and the back, would you not go up on the size? I haven't watched the video past the point where you were talking about doing a full bust adjustment, but that's where I struggle where you are right now.❤

Hi Zelda, if I went up a size the shoulders wouldn't have fitted and the pattern said you could allow to be at least 1/2 inch anyway as sewing in Jersey. The first one I made came out well it just went wrong with the second one! 🧵😊

Both makes are great! You may want to checkout My Bucolic Life, as Marie did some Palmer Ptetsch patterns. As for me, I don't think I could manage manipulating pattern tissue without total tearing it to bits. Lol.

Looking at the pattern tissue when you tried it on, it seems as if it could be that the bust point needs lowering. The point where the FBA lines meet I assume is the bust apex. I have seen this mentioned as a reason for those lines, as well as lowering the underarm. I have discovered that I have to move bust darts down for woven fabrics so I am going to look into it for knits. The problem is the bust point is not marked on many indie patterns (I use them mainly).
Oh my word yes it is! It's about 2 inches too high, that was a great spot by you. I've never had that issue before with any other big 4, it is normally spot on. No wonder I had a problem 😂. Thanks so much for bringing my attention to that, I wonder if anyone else spotted that? 😊🧵
@@socarole66 I mainly have that problem with big 4 patterns, but I've only made woven garments from them (since getting back into garment sewing about 10 years ago). For knits (and some wovens) I have a multitude of indie patterns which I mainly use, although I have had a problem with one of them, but I couldn't be be bothered messing about with it again, as I have a few more similar designs that don't need fiddling with!

Is it possible that stripe fabric has less stretch than the other one? Ot it is different weight. That may affect fit too
Thanks Agata. It's so weird as I don't have a real problem with fitting and why I obsess over drag lines on T shirts I will never know as if you look around, everyone has them 🤣. I think perhaps the brown fabric was ever so slightly lighter in weight and as you say, that can easily make a difference. Ahh sewing can be so frustrating at times 🤣.
