Gizmo needs his beak trimmed. That's only going to get worse. :( I know because my mini macaw had beak troubles that took many visits to repair.

Severe Macaws are pretty cool. I have a rescue severe and with just some love and attention he has become one of the more fun companions I have. My severe definitely likes females more than males but knowing that I simply separate him from my wife while I hang out with him and all is good. Severs can play much like the larger macaws and in many regards like a dog. I absolutely must rough house with my severe every time we spend time with each other. It lets him dump some energy and gets the flock bonding going. Then its preening and vocal training and then at the end a bit of a meal, good stuff like apples and vegetables. He is happy and I am happy. Amazing how they open up after a few weeks, months and years. Birds are truly special creatures.
Some of these comments are so weird, also, 24 years ago was a different time when ppl knew less info on exotic birds, our work has a 38 red/blue macaw that was inherited bc they didn't realize it would live like 100 years

Gizmo is gorgeous! I love that your parents have had him for his entire life- I always worry about the long-lived birds that go from home to home....so this certainly encouraged me, that many remain in homes long term, even indefinitely 👍🏽😊
My mother got our Blue Fronted Amazon Floyd as a baby too back in 1989. She also had to hand feed for him for a bit. He's 7 years older than me and Iv'e had him my entire life. He's truly a joy! She jokes around and calls him my older brother lol.

It's common for birds to have a favorite human. One of my mom's birds "hated" me when my mom was home and "tolerated" me when she wasn't. They obviously don't "hate" anyone: they just prefer someone over another. And, social skills are dependent on the interactions they receive from people.
I have a few birds, including a 25 year old cockatoo whom I've had since she was a baby. My cockatoo thinks it's hilarious to chase my daughter out of the room. She's very jealous of anyone I interact with other than her. She doesn't hate my daughter; she just prefers me. Similarly, Gizmo likely has jealousy issues towards you because he's had to share attention with you his whole life.
1:37 I love how Gizmo copied your head bobbing move to a tee. He's very talented! I get that this video was years ago, but if you still want to better your relationship with him and he has a favorite treat, have your parents stop giving him the favorite treat and let you, only, give him that treat. You'll have to give him that treat regularly (preferably daily), and he will definitely start liking you more. It will just take time.

Birds warm very very slowly. Be confident and kind and one day when you're both old, you'll realize you couldn't imagine life without one another.

Hope you are able to bond with him. I have a few parrots including 2 severe macaws. I offer a friendly advise to please be careful of your eyes. If you haven't bonded with him yet, I would not let him close to your face. Birds can be unpredictable unless you really really trust them.
You should totally do a video series of you trying to socialize with this macaw!!!! I love birds so much and would be extremely interested in a bird series or something idk haha

I have one that was hatched around 1998 so he is 25 or older based on when the breeder died. We are at least his third home since he was around 10 years old! These are birds with an attitude! To say the least.

Tyler, having owned several birds, everything from budgies to B&G Macaws, the best way to make friends with Gizmo----Feed him. And I mean his treats. Anything that is given to him as a treat, you give it. Or even if it is a favorite fruit or vege. I had a white capped Pionus who was just like Gizmo hated everyone but me, but even that was subject to approval. But my mother nope but if my mom came over and offered to give him a bath or a ride in the car, that bird was her best friend. Until it came time to go back in his cage. lol BTW have you parents trim his beak :)

I have a Quaker I only had her for about one and a hath years she is turning two in November. But I got her when she was a baby as well! She hates everyone except me. Heh, I can't relate to your problem but I wish you great success with Gizmo!

My severe is 17yo, is a bit mistrustful of strangers but for me ( outside breeding season) I can do nearly. Anything to him (body tickles, feather preens, hanging, upside down, etc). There really is more to them then they let on...

we have a mean macaw too, he's big and only likes female humans. Probably same age or close. We are his 3rd owner, his first owner abused him, 2nd owner was my mother-in-law(she rescued him) and now my wife and I have him after her mother died. He got a crooked beak and his name is Crooky

I cuddled with & would hold her on her back, very docile and she wasn't hand raised,so I'm surprised Gizmo is fearful.
I'd let Jou up a tree each day and she come down @sunset till one day my car broke down. When I got home she was gone.
stupid of me to not clip her wing shorter,but I got to work putting up signs and a month later I got a phone call from a lady who said"I think I have your Bird" Jou Jou had landed on her shoulder in her back yard,which had many walnut trees. it was about 8 miles from the tree she left in Preston Hollow. the lady kept her in her Greenhouse. It is a story I like telling because
I'm sure Im not the only person to have a pet Bird escape,just the only one fool enough to put their Bird in a tree everyday.
Never give up hope if your Bird fly's off . Signs work & it was people on their way to Synagogue who saw my sign & who were friends with woman who found my Bird.

I had a Severe Macaw too! (Captain!) they are very cool birds, but yeah, they do tend to only like one or two people at time, and act super angry and mean around people they don't like (almost everyone else xP)
It's good of you take care of Gizmo for your parents. First babies are always jealous of second babies.

Is your African Grey Congo noticibly dustier than your Severe Macaw or Conure? Does bathing reduce dust? I would get an African Grey if it wasn't for the dust. Otherwise I will get a Severe Macaw instead.

Gizmo is beautiful, i have a question tho, are their beaks meant to be like that? It just seems longer then what i would expect it to look like.
Train gizmo with clicker training and target training then go from there. they love being taught things. watch some vids by parrot whisperer.

Gizmo has a lot of pin feathers... His feathers don't look all to good over all, and of course his beak... Are you sure that Gizmo is doing OK?
Jana kippetje pin feathers are just new feathers growing my bird is growing new feathers ( pin feathers ) I thought the exact thing you did but Gizmo is just growing new feathers. For his beak. His beak is just growing my bird is doing the same thing. Or it could be a possibility that he has been eating something hard or scratching his beak in his cage so he could of scratched his beak. But these are normal things that birds do. I bet there is nothing serious going on.
Jana kippetje pin feathers are new baby feathers that have some dandruff on it. The dandruff goes around the feather keeping it closed until the feather is ready then the dandruff comes off and the feather expands. But basically it's just new feathers growing. If you have any more questions just search it up or ask me.

But if you would only read my whole comment you would have seen that I said that his feathers don't look healthy OVER ALL. And then the fact that his beak is way to overgrown. I have a little conure and a blue and gold macaw, and a blue headed amazon parrot. It's not that I don't know anything. I'm literally concerned about Gizmo. He doesn't look good, and not really happy either.
Gizmo looks fine and well cared for. Bird beaks do not always grow and look perfect.

It's cool that you and Gizmo interact and are trying to work on your relationship. I want a parrot, but I do think about where they'll end up later in life when I'm gone. I hope I have a kid like you that's willing to be friends and maybe take over :-)

I had a Severe (minuture) macaw that I took in along with a female blue and gold. He was a stinker. Cussed out the dog on video. DON'T BLAME THE BIRD - SOME TAUGHT HIM YOU KNOW. He died waiting in the vet's office. I have him on video and a local TV show. The blue and gold is a friend of my male blue and gold although they did mate once and performed their parts beautifully. I should probably give more background on my babies. Loved your video
I have a severe macaw too and he hates, HATES everybody. He only likes me, but he's very difficult to take care of because he bites me a lot too and terrorizes us by squawking all the time.

I used to tame birds. They can sense your emotional state. If you used to be afraid of him when you were young, he still plays off that.

You may want to Watch the parrot wizard website to help with gizmo. That guy is great at training. Gizmos body language didn't seem like he hates you. Maybe you aren't understanding how he likes to communicate?
