I lived in this home for 24 years. The cave was the product of a bored teenager who rented a jackhammer and just dug it out for the heck of it. Truth. No bomb shelter. No brewery. It is not underground. Just a hole in the side of the hill. Sorry to disappoint. Liability. Liability. Liability.

There are a few sandstone caves in Rochester, MN in addition to the one you visited. There is of course the gigantic Quarry Hill Caves which are open for tours periodically. But also, there is a frequently filled in Cave behind Kellogg Middle School that is similar in size to the one in this video. red and blue LEDs also support the growth of moss/algae's I use to use this idea for a planted tank filtration system. if they keep the leds on a lot it could possibly result in some small growth on the walls in places where its hard for the sun to reach
Very cool area. Amazing to see how locals in the past were able to make so much out of cool geology. Reminds me a bit of sandland. Would love to explore Cannon Falls if I am ever in the area. Edit: I think the fossils are possibly from microconchida.
As cool as having a cave would be, I would be more concerned about the house being built at the bottom of a hillside. Where does the water drain after a heavy rain?
@@virginiaseedsskogen2038 we upgraded to bigger house and the driveway is super steep, we would go through 400lbs of salt a year to maintain the driveway in the winter.
Agree that brewery cave would be unlikely. I did not see vents, and the geometry of moving beer kegs around in there is painful to contemplate. It also lacks any sign of a door frame, and if there is a road approaching it I can't see it. Now, off site brewery caves are peculiar, and like many others the Cannon Falls brewery was not a success. So maybe they did something stupid like store beer half way up a hillside. I've seen hotels with storage caves somewhat along these line.
I'd be surprised if the local brewery *didn't* have a cave somewhere, there seems to be enough sandstone around town. But as you said, this location and layout wouldn't have been a good choice for that.
Yeah, it looked like they made the ceiling too flat, or got too close to a shale layer up above. Any future tunnels should definitely have more of an arched ceiling and maybe go lower in the sandstone formation.
That could be, although you don't usually want to heat or dry out sandstone or it crumbles. It could have been the start of another cellar or tunnel that never got finished, or we thought maybe something to do with the pond. It would be a great place for a garden railroad, just carve out shelves, tunnels, buildings, etc straight from the hillside!
Sandstone caves are generally stable if the ceiling is arched, but this one is kind of a flat ceiling. If I owned the house I'd use this as a starting point and dig more tunnels with a better design!
We visited it during an open house day by the realtor. Otherwise it's private property and you'd have to contact the owner, the realtor, or the new owner if it's sold.
Something like a cave or tunnel? I know of a few in Red Wing, I visited a couple tunnels in a public park in this video: ua-cam.com/video/Rzl0Ofsu0Gw/v-deo.html at about 4:22 and 7:57.

Hello from Sandstone, MN
I owend the house from 2016 to 2020 the story I was told it was man made cave, after the house was built!
Why did you sell?
@@virginiaseedsskogen2038 we upgraded to bigger house and the driveway is super steep, we would go through 400lbs of salt a year to maintain the driveway in the winter.
This is the exact same style home I lived in in Canton Massachusetts. Built about 1960.
Make sure to stop at kings in meisville on your way through!!
There's a house for sale or it was for sale in Osceola WI that has a small cave. On 2nd Ave at the bottom of the hill right on the St Croix River.
I saw that one but I missed the open house! There was also one in Stillwater a couple years back that connected to the Wolf brewery cave.
Faribault has a few caves, some for cheese are still in use and there were others for flecks brewery...
I've seen some of those, I have a reproduction Fleck's sign in the underground bar I'm building :-)
Cool find. Definitely needs a bar in there.
If I owned this place you'd never see me aboveground! :-P
Really hope the new owners ditch that fence on the patio. The cliff side looks great
