In the original HC Andersen story the sea witch took her voice by cutting out her tongue. After losing her tail, walking on legs felt like walking on broken glass. And when the prince married the princess, the little mermaid was was offered a way out; she could kill the newly married couple and regain her tail, but she didn't do it, and she dissolved into sea foam at the first break of dawn. It was a very dark tale, as was literally every European fairy tail before Disney got their grubby hands on it. Some of the works of HC Andersen have been animated and put on youtube, and I highly recommend them.
