98 Astro replaced injectors to new style. new fuel pump unit. runs great but fuel pressure leaks as soon as key is turned off. isnt it going to hold pressure.
Find the rubber fuel line segments that come from the engine and jump to the frame. Cycle the key to run the pump, then pinch off the return line and see if it holds. Then do the same on the psi line and see if it holds. If it holds with the psi line pinched off, you have a bad fuel pump check valve. If it holds with the return line pinched off, you have a leaking regulator (seat area). If it bleeds down with both pinched off, you have a stuck open injector or ruptured regulator diaphragm or internal fuel leak on the assembly you just replaced. I have a video on this procedure on a CPI GM set up like yours.

Shazam no fuel ! 1 hour later, new injectors not to mention a fresh tank of the sweet stuff and she was purring like a champ. The beauty of diagnosing
Good video as always. A can of CHOKE SPRAY is a great troubleshooting tool, and can answer a lot of fuel system questions with a few blasts. Also, a STETHOSCOPE on the fuel injectors will tip you to stuck or dead ones.
I work at a shop slash junkyard, had a customer buy a 2005 Altima 2.5 engine, he had it shade tree installed, brought the car to us a week later, engine running very poor, mechanic saying BAD ENGINE. I diagnosed it to be bad fuel injectors. Used customers old injectors, good to go. 👍 I just wanted to add, the mechanic was trying to tell the customer he had to charge labor again for the reinstall of another motor, I don't like this kind of business. So anyway: DON'T BE A PARTS CHANGER Do your due diligence, that shade tree mechanic makes us all look bad lol
I thought the same thing. But the engine is in a Ford Maverick/Escape of someone in knew, and the plugged up cat was what we found after 2 Weeks. After that, I found these Channels on UA-cam and learned more than from my friend in 10 years. Now I am the master and he is the apprentice. And yes, Plugs and Injectors of Bank1 (Cyl 1-3) on that shitheap is a pain in the butt. But it just takes 5 min. to get the Intake Manifold off, its more annoying than a problem.
Dont let me catch you leaning over that motor like that while he cranks it please, saftey 1st my friend. Some bull crap could happen it ain't worth it cuz.
Something I definitely missed in this video, or at least missed telling you guys. Before I got there Pete has already sprayed a fuel source into the intake and it ran. So that is why I never went that direction and also totally wrote off compression/timing without verifying it. Sorry guys, I dropped the ball there. This was from 2016 so I don't remember all the specifics.
Another good one Paul. Honestly, my favorite part was when you were doing the cylinder drop test and keeping it running. It's something we've all done a bunch, but it was a glimpse at you working at your pace with no time to stop and explain your movements. Fully performing a cylinder contribution test, keeping a struggling engine running by hand on the throttle cable, and doing it all in under 60 seconds. We all appreciate the teaching, but it's always a treat to get to just watch a master at work.
DIY Auto Homeschool Agreed, as much as I love all the premium content from the class room to the case studies, it’d be a real treat to have him line up like 10 cars and real time diagnose them like he would if he were flat rate in a shop
Great video Paul, who’d have ever thought all 6 injectors would be stuck closed ,I suppose a quick check to confirm this would have been a shot of propane down the intake ....Thanks for sharing 👍
That is the result of a man who knows all about his trade, he understands cause and effect of automobiles and internal combustion engines, and the fuels used in them, as well as the scenarios that vehicle owners cars are likely to have gone through given the circumstances. Before he diagnosed it he talked about how a junkyard engine is very common to jave clogged injectors after sitting. Paul, your truly a master of your trade.
Brilliant video, Paul. Don't change a thing, the accent is part of the game. Love the friendly, humble attitude, offered to anybody from anywhere who cares to learn.
Mr scanner,.thanks to you, i discoverd why 98 v6 dakota would occasionally idle off, sprayed.a bit of water along lower o ring of.injectors, hour later turned car on, water at.exhaust, plus if they were not wired they'll spin.like tops. I sprayed carb cleaner to tempoary expand.rings, worked. Plus went to wrecking.yard to practice the procedure. I'm.buying one #3 injector(misfired, pluged)and new.o rings along with.plastic insert.to disconnect fuel.rail. That evap code led me to leak. Oh yea some mechanic.said putting injector on rail with new ring is very difficut. Will see. Thank you sir
put a little bit of engine oil or transmission oil on the injector o-ring, they will go right in. This type of o-ring will not swell from oil because it is made for it, essentially
This is why I like to use the parts off of the old engine especially if it drove in and I know they all worked correctly.. but I have successfully unstuck injectors using the jumper wire method. My theory is if it's stuck it's bad and needs replaced already, it's not going to make it any worse by trying.
Never seen fuel injectors stuck closed. Did not know that a plugged exhaust will not allow a car to start. Thank you Paul Danner for sharing your incredible knowledge with us God bless you and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family brother!!!!
Has anyone ever tried putting injectors in an ultrasonic cleaner? Seriousely I don't know it it's safe or not...nobody get any ideas from me, just wondering.
@@ScannerDanner why the positive side of the injector connector is still tested with the test light at 3.30 connected to battery positive?? Both ends are on the same voltage. You will not know even if this side circuit is working or not. Is not it supposed to be connected to negative battery when positive side is checked?? Please kindly correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.
@@tnamen1307 if you connect your test light to battery negative and touch on the control wire with the injector plugged in, you risk energizing the injector with you test light causing a constant spray from the injector (bad thing!!)
I'm about to take intake off a 98 chevy 5.7 ...that looks like all injectors are stuck ... sat maybe a month maybe 2 ... new fuel pump ..lots of pressure all electric checks.. will run great with fuel added at throttle body

I sprayed fuel in it with a little spray bottle kept it running for about 3 or 4 minutes and then all sudden it started idling really rough and after 20 minutes of really rough idling all injectors came loose and it ran fine
You think you're bad speaking ... I've got a MA accent! Not even fellow Americans understand what I'm saying! 🤣😂🤣 Boy am I familiar with that engine. Had 3 neighbors who all had the exact same car, same color, and same engine too! The "Vulcan" V6. One was a Mercury Sable. I've done coil packs, intake manifolds to do spark plugs, timing cover leaks, radiator replacements (out the bottom, WTH), etc.. I was gonna (😁) say ... I'd bet that previous engine failed due to a timing cover leak that went a little too far, and melted the engine down. Every one of those engines I've seen around here had the same leak. Great stuff as always, Paul, even if it's 3 years old. 👍🍻
9:53 I m from algeria we speak arabic first than french (changed recently to english 😁). You re the most comprehended accent so far!! Keep it up good work TEACHER. You re the BEST.
I've been able to bring throttle body injectors back to life by activating them repeatedly for a few minutes with the injector tester/activator. If the engine runs at all, port injectors usually clear up by heating and cooling the engine a few cycles, if they are just gummed up from storage. Is it possible to play a video followed by a 5-10 min. live stream in the same broadcast on UA-cam?
"Fixed" a few stuck injectors on an old Dodge pick up with a V10 engine by LIGHTLY tapping on a charged up injector with a tiny Blue Point hammer. They were stuck from sitting for years. Blue Point hammers rock!!!
it took me forever to diagnose this same problem. i just changed out the gas and then it ran. the injectors probably still need changing or cleaning. one dead giveaway of old fuel is a bad stench coming from the tailpipe, or from the gas filler opening. smells like turpentine. the old fuel that i took out has a clear but dark amber color to it, pretty much like the color and transparency of a turn signal bulb.
Regarding the English issue. I understand you perfectly even with slam, i guess it's still English just faster and English isn't my first language and I've learned a lot from you. Im from Central America
There are some fellows in Great Britain with automotive channels who I have given up watching due to their outrageous (to me) accents, which make it nearly impossible to understand maybe 60% or more of what they are saying!
@@Thefox2000unit The main one is the fellow Steve, who has visited Keith (New Level Auto) on Staten Island and who has been in some videos of Keith, and also in Ivan's PHAD videos. To try to make out what he is saying is really something, like trying to figure out a foreign language. I even left him a comment quite a while back mentioning my difficulty in understanding him with his thick accent, and he said he would try to be more clear, but I couldn't tell any difference in later videos.
I really like this way if "one way interaction" with the viewer.. 10-15 sec every now and then just to pause and think about what your doing and at the same time throwing out a question "What to do next?"
When manually testing the injectors with the OTC tool, are you disconnecting the injector from the ECU harness or backprobing the harness connector to the injector? I am working on an older Taurus SHO and it's almost impossible to get to the injectors with the intake manifold on. I had the injectors cleaned and tested, and replaced the rusty tank and fuel pump but I cannot verify if the injectors are firing. I need to verify the crank position sensor is functioning as well. being OBD-I, I don't have much feedback from the ECU.
It's all good SD, no problem with your slang, I understand you pretty good... Keep up the good work, nice videos by the way... Ervin living here in Guatemala... God Bless...
You are awesome paul.i enjoyed working the field my 40 years before becoming dissabled. But i enjoyed this. Line of work although there were times you want to pull your hair. Good example of that was the 1986 mustang with the HEI distributor module. We Automotive. Technicians need to learn just because a part is new doesnt mean is always working like it should. God bless paul thank you for all your videos and hard work producing them. Thank your son. Great camera manager 👍👍
Hello!... I've been enjoying your channel and videos for quite a while and thank you. Just a question...I see the cool tool you're using but if we introduced a fuel source through the the intake while cranking would that validate the same thing? Secondly... By doing that what do you think the chances of the heat freeing the frozen injectors?
Just did this in a 89 f150 full of bad fuel varnish. Laquer thinner mixed half with fresh 93 octane melted varnish. Then quickly run normal fresh fuel to not harm components. The fuel tank selector valve on these trucks have a filter in them many unaware.Often never changed full of gunk.
a breakout lead kit would be good for you to have so you dont have to back probe that pulse box, I have the same and also lost the jumpers. The kit I have is a snap-on MTTL900-KIT but pico has a better set PQ070, it dose well with cars like bmw's where you cant back probe. On the topic of speech, I find no issue with you and at less your not saying "which one all y'all got/have..." much that I could say you do. People have made note of me using that a bunch.
Don't forget the Amish speak English and Pennsylvania Dutch. Which is a form of German. Or the Western Pennsylvania accent that makes some people sound like they're from west Virginia. Lol I am proud to say my bloodline comes from Kane PA
OTC makes a fuel injection cleaner that connects at the rail so there is no dilution. You disable the fuel pump and the vehicle runs on the cleaner. I've used it a number of times, most recently on a 2007 Jeep GC with high fuel trims, normal fuel pressure, no vacuum leaks, and a dipping idle at braking. I use it with Berryman B12 Chemtool, It solved the problem. www.amazon.com/OTC-7448A-Injection-Cleaner-Canister/dp/B00GZ0H9VC/ref=pd_sbs_263_t_1/144-1174809-1704141?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00GZ0H9VC&pd_rd_r=41cb97c8-469f-486c-8767-36466d1acb8e&pd_rd_w=TjnrZ&pd_rd_wg=ux44V&pf_rd_p=5cfcfe89-300f-47d2-b1ad-a4e27203a02a&pf_rd_r=6EXR4519C44FE1B33KF1&psc=1&refRID=6EXR4519C44FE1B33KF1
I feel your pain about your slang Paul I'm from Louisville KY and I have a pretty thick southern accent that sounds like I'm from much further south and Idk where or how it developed because my family and friends dont have as thick of an accent as I do. And it bothers me because I know some people will associate a southern accent with being stupid or slow no matter how smart the person speaking actually is. I actually had intentions of building my UA-cam channel back when I first started it around 07 or 08 and as soon as I posted a couple videos the first thing I kept seeing in the comments was people ragging on my accent and not even paying attention to what the videos were about.
very well explained as always, thank you paul i'm gonna ask you a question if you energize 10 ms that injector what will be consider normal the drop in fuel pressure drop how many psi to consider good flow? I ask you this because I had a 04 explorer 4.0 l was running lean severe lack of power , under load , what I could not find the reason, my self, because was coming from several shops already with all kind of new parts , but the owner told me apparently what they found was the wrong set of fuel injector was installed bough on line, I new it was running lean because all 4 02 sensor peg to the floor during acting up, but good fuel pressure , good flow, and I did contamination test to fuel, the pcm was commanding to open 20 ms the fuel injector so I gave up my self after hours of diagnostic with out a solid conclusions, well I thing I wanted to vent it . thank you your input is aprecaited.
I've seen this!!! Got my ass kicked too. A flex fuel engine on these Fords use 19lbs per hr injectors and the gas only engine uses 12lbs per hr injectors. It was an auction truck and it was a flex fuel set up that had gas only injectors. So no matter what, it was lean because the injector flow rate wasn't enough for the program
I have just reinstalled a four cylinder Engine in my Nissan Altima and am having the same/similar problem. Thanks for the info it gives me more area's to look at. Fingers crossed!
Thanks scanner Dan. I have a 90 Ford f250 with a 300 6cyl. I overheated it pretty bad & cracked the head. I got another head & upper & lower intake from the junkyard & changed everything and I used the lower intake from the junkyard with the injectors in it. I could not get it to run unless i sprayed it with starting fluid and I did have feul presser at the feul rail. I knew it was a injector problem but I couldn't believe that all the injectors were bad. After watching this video I went out & taped on all of the injectors & just like that, it's running. So thank u for your videos & knowledge
Looks like maybe the solution on a car I just sold. New fuel pump and filter. Good spark. Wouldnt start. Would start with starting fluid then die. I had to sell it and move on but the next person ended up getting it running. Still kicking myself to this day about that truck.
Helo, i'm from mozambique thanks for your help man with your video, I have a Nissan bluebird with same problem, I have crack, pressure on fuel pump but the car not start
SCANNERDANNER< How can the OTC electronic fuel injector tester narrow down which was the BAD stuck fuel injector? from the video it looked like to me that ALL the fuel injectors were stuck or needed to be cleaned so how did your narrow down the bad stuck one? If you don't have the snap on scanner tool to Monitor the fuel pressure, what can you use to test each fuel injector to see if it works correctly using the OTC electronic fuel injector tester?
How important would you say fuel volume is on a situation like this?... vs just fuel pressure alone. Knowing it's not the problem here, is that something you may look at checking?
10:00 those minutes made me proud of myself and of my teacher @ScannerDanner LOVE you so much from IRAQ. But look I swear I'm into British accent they use gonna soo much more than you could ever expect.
Food for thought, most Fords with electronic returnless fuel injection systems support fuel injector balance tests from your scantool. Take out the injectors and boil them in water
I don't know what hot water will do besides starting the internals to corrode, I go with an ultrasonic bath and get the front 3 injectors to the back and vice versa.
Your tools are very great, I really appreciate and enjoy everytime watching your videos, I hope someday I can have also some of your tools. I am just a small time Mechanic here in Moalboal Cebu Philippines.
Haha paul i'm from australia and hadn't even picked up on it. Don't worry if people don't like the way you speak. The fella that brought it up probably says some crazy australian slang without even realising.
Since I’m in the area I particularly enjoyed your explanation of our accent. Mine only gets bad (worse?) when I’m arguing or fighting with someone about something. Heard a recording of me arguing with a bad neighbor once and I was mortified at the Yinzer accent I descended into when I was po’d haha. Gave me a laugh about “gonna” man. I needed it today too hah.
I think your awesome, Mastertech you can speak how ever you want. If others really got something to say about how you speak thats actually rude rwgardless. Most people do the same in a texmex speaker most of the time but mosyly clear english. I was having trouble with a 99 escalade not starting after first attempt and it was a full functioning weak fuel pump. Got it fixed had no idea it need 60 to 66 psi to open poppets thanks bro o really appreceate all your videos , teaching and breaking everything down for these diy- Ers thanks again ! Your awesome imana keep on learning as much as i can from you your vids are perfect.
I have a car 1994 infiniti g20 2.0 with the same problem cranks no start,, has spark, compression, injector pulse, fuel pressure 40psi but in the return side from the rail does not come out ANY gasoline... could that be stuck injectors? but at least it should come out gasoline returning to the tank??
Good diag again. I would have looked on the cam shaft sensor first, maybe it was defective on this old engine. And for the injectors: I would pull them out, ultrasonic bath and put bank1 injectors in bank 2 and vice versa, so you could clean it. Meanwhile drain the tank and put in fresh fuel, I bet if you would have spilled some of it, it would be yellow like pee, and that is the water in it. You were right with that, I had the same thing every new season when I get my Corrado out, I had bad fuel every time.
I wander that people aren't native speakers English like me with intermadiate level of knowledge in English could understand you mostly, even you say "imna".
Since this was from 2016, I cannot be sure but I believe Pete did exactly that before I got there and informed me of that, which is why I skipped it completely and forgot to mention that very important aspect to you guys.
Paul, in old time Aussie slang, 'gunna' is a nickname for a bloke (guy to you 'mericans) who's always saying he's going to do something but never gets around to it. So us old timers know what you mean lol!
Another great video, in the past 2 years i learn alot with your videos, even if that type of cars dont exist in my country... Cheers form Portugal, 💪💪💪🤗🤗🤗
Eh, run it off propane till she warms up, those injectors will free up. Did that on an older 5.0 gang fired engine. Or a hairdryer blowing on the injectors.
You would be able to spray brake clean in the throttle body to atleast see if engine will start is 1 way I was taught. Thanks for the awesome videos you do for us I am a premium member to your channel I recommend that to everyone so much learning for us.
I love my GTC505 for this type of thing. Test coil firing patterns and injector firing patterns quick and easy. Of course you still have to know if they are opening. Maybe introduce a fuel source, check fuel pressure drop with injector pulse...pull the easy side of the rail to see if it sprays. 🤔
Gracias Paul Hahaha I try to wach as much as I cut of your videos I was born in México but little bit more that half of my entire life been living here un Charlotte NC God bless you .
I like how you keep going until you get it running. I like the current test on the pump for amps and rpm. I do that a lot. On fuel problems just like relative compression on every misfire.
i have used my cell phone with a Oscilloscope app, and with a Bluetooth ear peace that i covered the mic with rtv and glued a alligator clip and a magnet on it, you can stick it to a part and watch the phone for a mechanical movement. and for the sticky injectors, i welded a long peace of welding stick to a engraver device, it buzzes them open pretty easy and fast.
I learned a lot from you bro. and you make me feel better, specially when you test about how to look if there is no spark no five volt reperence. I really thank you a lot bro. I'm from the Philippines
I’ve used an air hammer with a piece of rubber hose shoved on the end of punch to unstick injectors and other various electrical components like that before. beats mutilating them with a screwdriver
When the back injectors are under the intake -- can't you wire up the injector timer to the wiring at the pcm? Let the injectors share a common +12v from the tool and only ground one injector at a time.

Great Video, Glad to see you supporting my home town hero "Johnny Cash"
Good video as always. A can of CHOKE SPRAY is a great troubleshooting tool, and can answer a lot of fuel system questions with a few blasts. Also, a STETHOSCOPE on the fuel injectors will tip you to stuck or dead ones.
I work at a shop slash junkyard, had a customer buy a 2005 Altima 2.5 engine, he had it shade tree installed, brought the car to us a week later, engine running very poor, mechanic saying BAD ENGINE. I diagnosed it to be bad fuel injectors. Used customers old injectors, good to go. 👍
I just wanted to add, the mechanic was trying to tell the customer he had to charge labor again for the reinstall of another motor, I don't like this kind of business. So anyway:
DON'T BE A PARTS CHANGER
Do your due diligence, that shade tree mechanic makes us all look bad lol
Sometimes a stethoscope can be handy to determine injector operation.
Thank's Paul, I'm from Connecticut and i have trouble with your Pennsylvania accent too! Haha!. I'm definitely getting a OTC test light! Great vidios!
Dont let me catch you leaning over that motor like that while he cranks it please, saftey 1st my friend. Some bull crap could happen it ain't worth it cuz.
It's not only "gonna" for going to, but also "wanna" for want to :P
Why not spray some auxiliary fuel through the intake tube. Get it to run. See if maybe that free's anything up.
I would not argue with this approach
Luv your videos. Awesome knowledge. Thanks from South Africa

I could not have said it better.
I have seen a few salvage engines with all the injectors clogged solid latley. Thanks for sharing.
Why not remove and inspect a spark plug? If it’s dry it isn’t getting any fuel!
To much work :-)
This is why I like to use the parts off of the old engine especially if it drove in and I know they all worked correctly.. but I have successfully unstuck injectors using the jumper wire method. My theory is if it's stuck it's bad and needs replaced already, it's not going to make it any worse by trying.
I replaced a 200k Chevy v6 with a 30k used engine. Same symptoms. All 6 injectors stuck. Put old ones in and put 25k more on them so far.
Never seen fuel injectors stuck closed.
Did not know that a plugged exhaust will not allow a car to start.
Thank you Paul Danner for sharing your incredible knowledge with us God bless you and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family brother!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
If it's plugged good enough it will. Either that or it will start but only run super slow and don't touch the gas.
Has anyone ever tried putting injectors in an ultrasonic cleaner? Seriousely I don't know it it's safe or not...nobody get any ideas from me, just wondering.
That's the typical cleaning process
I’m winning 😂 I like that one. I’m gonna start using it

Thanks.
@@tnamen1307 if you connect your test light to battery negative and touch on the control wire with the injector plugged in, you risk energizing the injector with you test light causing a constant spray from the injector (bad thing!!)
im at a point in my life that if a motor that has been sitting wont start, I lightly tap the fuel injectors while someone is cranking.
Cool! Nice temporary fix. Old gas, stuck injectors. Lucky it ran as good as it did!
I loved this one! Who would have thought all of the injectors would be stuck.
I'm about to take intake off a 98 chevy 5.7 ...that looks like all injectors are stuck ... sat maybe a month maybe 2 ... new fuel pump ..lots of pressure all electric checks.. will run great with fuel added at throttle body
@@davehadley2686 I had the same problem with a junkyard engine cranked amd cranked but mo statt.
Boy am I familiar with that engine.
Nice work again Mr Danner!
Ive used an electric toothbrush to try to shake/vibrate things like that injector while pulse testing it.
Stay gold.

It is not but that would be cool
Who are they?

Umina = I'm gunna = I'm going to = I am going to.
Same sort of thing but in reverse: You know what I am saying = ya nam sayin = ynamsayin

very well explained as always, thank you paul i'm gonna ask you a question if you energize 10 ms that injector what will be consider normal the drop in fuel pressure drop how many psi to consider good flow?

Maybe worn cams causing poor valve lift?
I would of expected it to try and run even with worn cams but this wasn't even interested in firing up.

I think your awesome, Mastertech you can speak how ever you want. If others really got something to say about how you speak thats actually rude rwgardless. Most people do the same in a texmex speaker most of the time but mosyly clear english.
I have had really good luck unsticking injectors with Motorvac Injector Cleaning machine

I wander that people aren't native speakers English like me with intermadiate level of knowledge in English could understand you mostly, even you say "imna".
Has spark, has compression.... next step for me would be to substitute a fuel to determine if the engine does actually run with a good fuel source
Since this was from 2016, I cannot be sure but I believe Pete did exactly that before I got there and informed me of that, which is why I skipped it completely and forgot to mention that very important aspect to you guys.
Yep would have been a good time for some propane...

The type of car really doesn't matter right? It is the principles that are universal
What about trying carb cleaner to se if it fires on that if it doesn't fire it's not the Injectors?
many different way to roll with this one, thanks! An alternate fuel source is a sound diagnostic tool in the right hands for sure.
Eh, run it off propane till she warms up, those injectors will free up. Did that on an older 5.0 gang fired engine. Or a hairdryer blowing on the injectors.
You would be able to spray brake clean in the throttle body to atleast see if engine will start is 1 way I was taught. Thanks for the awesome videos you do for us I am a premium member to your channel I recommend that to everyone so much learning for us.

you are the best that is the same problem with my 89 f150. 302. i believe the injection is stuck

Thank you for the videos, and the proper English, I am a second language speaker and it helps me understand better :)
i have used my cell phone with a Oscilloscope app, and with a Bluetooth ear peace that i covered the mic with rtv and glued a alligator clip and a magnet on it, you can stick it to a part and watch the phone for a mechanical movement. and for the sticky injectors, i welded a long peace of welding stick to a engraver device, it buzzes them open pretty easy and fast.
We understand you brother... lol sometimes I'm all over the board from the south (New Orleans) All those words are correct
Starting fluid might work maybe until washed all the varnish in the injector while running/starting.
I might go to amerika to watch an nba game in 2020,if i have your local accent its your fault paul😜😜.
We been using "gonna" since 1806 they'll be alright.. lol
When the back injectors are under the intake -- can't you wire up the injector timer to the wiring at the pcm? Let the injectors share a common +12v from the tool and only ground one injector at a time.
