      GiantRobotUppercut He literally added 2/3 cups sugar. Thats 1.57 tablespoons per cup of drink. So in a standard 12oz serving, thats 2.3 tablespoons or 7 teaspoons of sugar. A healthy diet is only supposed to include 9 teaspoons of added sugar for a male. 6 for females. Diabetic cascade is right lol

    Horchata is my all time favorite drink and I've made it from scratch and it takes way longer than this. And I've only ever used a sifter to strain out the grit and I had to do it 4 times and it STILL had a lot of gunk left on the bottom. And I've always thought that I needed cheese cloth but I have no where to get it. Super glad you made this fast, easy way. Now all I need to do is find cheese cloth

    Chef john, small thing to add. When you use the almonds, a lot of almond milk recipes call for soaking the almonds for at least eight hours in water with a pinch of salt to soften them. Makes them easier to blend up.
    after using the nut milk bag, you can also use a mesh strainer and strain a second time.

    Hey chef john! I don't know if you read the comments but I have a trick for skipping the nut milk bag! if you use RAW almond butter instead of raw almonds you dont need to strain and you keep all the nutrients with no by products left. Tip #2 you can use any raw nuts to make beverage as long as they are raw.

      Boiling the almonds (or blending them and adding boiling water to them/cooking the blended almonds) should be fine for the taste. it shouldnt change anything dramatically. You could also experiment with other nuts, although it would change the flavour a bit, of course.

      @15000000th 7 років тому +17

      Doesn't seem like he did since his grains were dry and not stuck together. Plus, washing it would remove some of its starch, which is essentially why there is rice in the first place.

    • @sunny35228
      @sunny35228 7 років тому +2

      Ollie Peters with that logic, can i then just wash my rice and add some sort of cornstarch or a nut starch? I don't know why but i just prefer washing my rice then just using it out of the bag.

    • @15000000th
      @15000000th 7 років тому +1

      Boxs I honestly am not qualified enough with cornstarch and/or nutstarch to give you a proper answer! I never wash my rice, even though I've been told I should when only preparing rice (removes excess starch and cleans the rice). I would just trust Chef and follow his recipe ;) or you can always try it out yourself, I am sure if you don't put TOO much starch it won't ruin the recipe! Remember, nothing wrong with tinkering recipes!

      PaganVoodooGypsy chufa is a long dried root. I don't know why it's tiger nuts in English. Lots of sugar of course. 😊

      Rob F the drink originated in Egypt. Also, the Spanish one is too simple. The Latin American one is much more delicious and doesn't taste watered down.

    The tone of his voice is kinda fucked. Like as he talks he kinda goes up a little then down. Everytime he stops he sounded like he didnt finish his thought.

    great stuff!
    for smoother texture without having to use a high power blender.... soak and drain the nuts and rice and then freeze them first. boil half the water, add the nuts to the blender and then the boiling water and blend on high (the water that soaked into the nuts and rice will have swelled as it freezes and adding the boiling water will shatter nuts and rice much finer than the blender can), then add the rest of the water. i do that so i don't have to strain my nut milk (comes out much creamier).

    Just put everything into a mason jar to marinate over night.
    Used ground cinnamon instead and was only able to fit 3 cups of water in.
    I'll keep ya'll updated.
    Update1: Just found out I can make a rice pudding with the left over rice "powder".
    Uddate2: Finished it out and it's great. It's refreshing just like he said, not to sweet, and tastes like an excellent lite sweet rice/almond milk.
    I think I'm going to make the left over rice powder (from straining) into rice pudding.
