    Your home looks great. If it makes you happy, that's fabulous! I love cottage, boho, whimsy, and more along those lines. I want color, pattern, and happy chaos. When shopping, I never worry about whether something is going to work in my home. If I like it, it comes home with me and I find a place for it. TFS. Great video.

    Love your idea of 90 -10 Anne. A few of my things don't quite fit in with my Colonial Primitive home either, but I still love them. So this is a great way to (allow ourselves) to personalize our homes with a few touches that are a little bit out of the ordinary. No more apologizes here...LOL!

    Thank you Anne!! Another AMAZING video!! I agree with you ,that "Death Wreath" (Hairloom) gave me the creeps!! Over the years, I have always loved the New England look, but the country trends have taken me on detours that have been dead ends. I have gotten rid of a lot of stuff over the years, but I have refocused and now my steady friends are redware, brown ware, yellowware, crocks and wooden bowls. Timeless!! Rooted in History!! Less is definitely more. Better to get rid of things that don't work than to keep them just to fill up space. Thankfully the Primitive look is more minimalistic anyway!! I love so many things that you love....I have many Old Sturbridge Village redware pieces and also own the Magnolia black matte mugs, etc... (Thankfully OSV has an online gift shop so that even though I live in Minnesota I can still purchase) I have spent so much time in your home via UA-cam...It is phenomenal!! So warm and rooted in the past.....Your artwork and decorating are truly and incredible gift from God!! What awesome talent....Thank you for sharing it with the world!!

    I LOVE it !!!
    It is interesting to see the variety of decorating tastes and styles.
    One time a girl asked me, "What do YOU like?" This was on the subject of our yard, which had never really been my department, in our multi-family situation.
    Nobody had EVER asked me what did "I" like. This opened up a whole new world for me.
    It is nice to see how you explored and created an environment that YOU really like! I like it too. A LOT!
    FYI - I create vignettes on the sideboard, etc. for each month, and store the items in boxes. That way I can have a variety of styles and also use my collection of gifts and inherited keepsakes in the appropriate month.
    For example: January-Oriental, Feb-French, Mar-Irish, Apr-Dutch, May-English, June-Greek-nautical, July-Americana, Aug-Tropical, Sep-Mediterranean, Oct-Eastern European, Nov-Native American, Dec-Oh-You-Know.
    Thanks!

    Bonnie again Anne!! I felt at the first farmhouse as if someone was running their nails down a blackboard.(do people today know what a blackboard is?).but in full disclosure I am not a fan of Victorian. Having said that, kudos to the nod of the time period with the mural, floorcloths and stenciling. But please choose one, any one not both. Of course the 2nd was so pleasant and soothing and well done. Having said that, your home is your castle and therefore anything goes if it pleases you. .Perhaps the problem arises when you think you have embraced one style and without any information about the correctness of it, you claim it as history. Now this time you have all of thinking and thinking and i bet that was your intention all along.

    I do not have a primitive home, but my upstairs is colonial country with a few primitive decor pieces. My downstairs is more formal with Queen Anne cherry furniture as I like decorating in the Colonial Williamsburg style. The now defunct Colonial Home magazine had been my guide for years. However, adding 10% of something different spices it up a little and helps keep things from looking stagnant.

    • @AnneClay
      @AnneClay  5 місяців тому

      Your home sounds lovely Barbara. Isn’t it interesting how magazines come and go with the current trends. I’ve seen interesting twists on the Colonial Williamsburg style lately peppering in some modern and it’s really gorgeous.

  • @bluebird8224

    Here in eastern Virginia, we think of the colonial style in terms of Williamsburg and Jamestown, which is fancier than conservative New England. The commercial, aristocratic, royal and religious origins are different and reflected in the architecture, decorative arts, dress, etc. The pottery found in archaeological surveys look different to me. The classic blue and white or blue and gray pottery from the Williamsburg Pottery shop is my idea of colonial decor, and I have several nice pieces.
    -- Jamestown was a proprietary colony, and that area has a more commercial feel in my mind. Nearby Williamsburg is decked out in the royal style, because it had a royal governor. That style is the highest class in the pecking order, with its own paint color chart.
    -- During the Cromwell period in England, royal families fled to northern Virginia to what is called the Fairfax Grant - the land between the Potomac river and the Rappahannock river. That area has a different personality, in my opinion.
    -- If someone says their family settled in Jamestown or Williamsburg, then I want to know if they came before or after 1649, because the royals came after that time.
    -- A lot of primitive style decorating seems to have more neutral colors, but remember not all the English colonies shunned gold, silver and bright colors.

      That’s a great lesson! Thank you! I knew how it’s different in different parts of the country but I never knew all the intricacies and the origins behind the differences. Thanks for sharing this!

    Excellent advice Anne. I too have had many different styles of furniture and decor through my lifetime, each fitting the style of the home. But once we built a New England Saltbox, that was going to be my style for the rest of our lives. I call it Williamsburg Colonial, not to primitive, just a tad formal, altho no brass in the home...home is finally finish, as the black granite countertops were installed in the kitchen...We are doing a Colonial gig..😁 Thank you for the lovely video, so many historical sites in New England to be a docent..😉

    • @AnneClay
      @AnneClay  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Elisabeth! So glad your new home is finished! It sounds wonderful! I like to do that too… decorate the home to the style that it was built in. My last place was 1930s and I chose to make it a little more cosmo simple,’my beach cottage was cottage, my house in the country years ago was country and my split level in NJ was traditional Ethan Allen. My NC home was newer so it was decorated in a more modern style. I will stay prim as long as I’m here and someday when I move to a condo in my old age… well then I’ll have to see where I end up. It will probably all change again. I just like decorating! lol

      Hi Anne..It sounds like you have lived in many a house and have had several decorating styles..us too. My husband corrected me, our home is not Colonial Williamsburg style, but the movie "The Patriot" starting Mel Gibson..he said we have more Windsor chairs in this home than in that entire movie..😅 Gotta love him, well trained and he is correct.
      Love your tavern room and the cooking fireplace..would love a working fireplace with a cooking crane, but just to bloody hot in Phoenix..would heat up the house, maybe in the winter a couple of times, as we very seldom use the heater in the winter, not likely to add that addition..oh well, another lifetime I like to say..

    • @AnneClay

      That’s a really good question Stephanie. It’s hard when you have family heirloom furniture and it’s hard when both people aren’t on board. And money is always a hard thing.I have to think on that. I guess it depends if it’s a hill that you want to die on. Maybe you can find one room
      That you can make your own and your style. Keep it minimal that way you don’t have to get too much for it. There’s always cheap items on Facebook marketplace or things that you can find thrifting.

    I've tried my best to rid my house of Victorian....but can't say it's 100% gone.....not enough left to really make it seem off though. I think you can blend in some pieces from other eras but it's important to have that fixed mindset of primitive you are moving toward. The lace and doilies are a couple of the things that I realized just had to go, and that made a world of difference. Another thing I realized that had to go, is the use of too many floral patterns which will automatically move you into English country or cottage style. However, I'm not a purist in that we keep our comfy 21st century chairs and our modern conveniences. I try to stick to folk art and antique toys etc to add any whimsy.

    • @AnneClay
      @AnneClay  5 місяців тому

      I have all my lace put away too lol. And you’re right, the floral patterns move it into English Country which I’m always tempted to indulge in for a month when I’m desperate for spring but then the urge goes away again. Thank goodness for that 10 percent.

    Many years ago when I knew what I wanted but not knowing how to make the change to where my heart was leading me (primitive), a friend shared her poem with me that made such a difference in my life and I refer to it often. I had been through Victorian, Tuscan, 80’s country, Americana, etc but for me it couldn’t be a style, it had to be a way of life where the conflict was replaced by peace. I am sharing her poem, her words, not mine in the hopes that others might see themselves the way I did. She made a huge difference in my life.
    “My Thoughts on Decorating........
    To me, Decorating is a Path! It all starts with your first home and evolves from there. It's a path that we all walk on, inspired by others to make another turn on the long and windy road. There are no right or wrong choices, just Right or Left turns. Some will stop at the first caution sign and others will speed right thru. Whilst some are taking baby steps along the path others have their radar on to avoid a speeding ticket.
    Our path is one we create as we go, never knowing where it will end. Pieces that make our hearts skip a beat and come home to live with us changes the navigation and leads us in a whole new direction.
    Wherever you are on your decorating path, enjoy it! Don't be afraid of the path with the least amount of footprints. Take that step and leave your mark.
    Some will love it, some will question it and others will be unsure of it. This is not a judgement against your path, it is just 2 paths that do not have an intersection.
    Let your heart lead you, your mind guide you and your imagination run wild! Sit back and enjoy your decorating journey for after all.......
    It's your path to making your house a home!”

      Aw thanks! I’ve had like 2 podcasts already and I always get sick of listening to myself hahaha. You’re so right about the first home, they didn’t study the period they just gathered stuff and put it together. Such a great observation!

    My Mom’s Mom was poor with 7 kids, 19 grandchildren. Dad was in the Navy, so we parked his family’s furniture in 1960 until my Mom’s Mom died in 1975. Her sister had died and she had no children so Gee Gee took her furniture. That is what poor people do. Mom got Dad’s furniture back. I saw a piece of lace and asked what it was from my uncle. He threw it at me and said, “this old rag? Your grandmother’s wedding dress!” The way he said it, no one fought me over it. My grandmother had 19 grandchildren, so that was a wonder. At 31 I got married in that dress. My parents died and my house is filled with my Dad’s family furniture and my husband’s family furniture. My husband bought a Baldwin piano and office chairs and I bought a loveseat from Cargo, and the rest is family stuff, including 4 quilts. I am ignoring styles in Furniture. It is home.

      Thanks for sharing your story Charlotte - I absolutely get it. I furnished my entire home for 25 years from everything given to me from my two sets of grandparents when they passed on. It's a luxury to be able to choose a style and decorate in it. My mom lived with the same style furniture for 45 years until she switched out a few rooms years later and that will be the furniture she keeps until she dies - and then it will be passed on to her grandchildren to use. Home really starts in the heart and it's not about your style or your furniture - it has to do with love. Even when I moved into this home, all my furniture was given to me, I hardly had any. The fact that I have this house and have been able to get nice pieces has been a huge blessing, although I will say that I haven't purchased too much of it. Most of what I have in this house was bought second hand and bartered for. The artist in me always has to have my interiors a certain way. It's an itch I have to scratch, but I've done it with very little money my entire life. Everytime I moved, I unloaded a bunch of items because it was cheaper to get something on the other end than move in in a moving van. It caused me to get really scrappy.

      @@AnneClay I make a lot of things. I sew pillow covers and slipcovers. I make ponchos out of pillowcases. The pockets are huge for traveling and hospital. A friend had her phone stolen so I sent her 2. Only employees go into hospital rooms or sometimes relatives’ rooms. We just watched the kitchen re-arrangement and laughed a lot. Sometimes I give my husband fruit and nuts while he is doing things for me. I almost never, ever, ever, ever move furniture.

      @@AnneClay I want to be like you and move furniture! I once asked 2 Mormon girls to help me and they got an Edwardian desk with bookcase snd and a 2 piece highboy to the back of the house. They were young and just wanted a chance to wear jeans. No pizza or money needed.

      Interesting! I think that’s fine that you keep your home all to yourself. I really decorate my home just for me too… even tho I blast it all over UA-cam lol. When I decided to start a UA-cam channel I needed to talk about what I enjoyed so of course it was home interiors.

      Thanks Danita! ❤️ lol you certainly don’t have to change a thing if it works for you! I think part of reason farmhouse number one didn’t work at all was because there was no one person who it represented… it was a group effort.
