The fact that Cook came from a poor family, and excelled so high based purely on MERIT & good principles, despite the discrimination of him for not being a Gentleman, is absolutely astounding and shows what an individual can accomplish despite their position in life.

This documentary was an excellent insight into the life of James Cook. I despair at the number of people who, through their ignorance and hatred, choose to rewrite history for the no other reason than it run counter to their perverse narrative. It is important to ensure that our children are educated without bias given the true facts. The current trend to re-write historical facts is corrosive, it MUST be resisted.

This was one of the most well presented documentaries I have seen in quite a while. I was born in New Zealand and came to Australia at the age of 5, in 1980. While we did learn about James Cook in school, I really had no knowledge about his early life and how he worked his way up through hard work, kindness to his fellow man, and determination. My favorite part, however, is the point that was made at the end. Being the best person you can be, and helping others. I wonder how many of those dim witted vandals would follow that path, or even understand it for that matter. Thankyou.

Back in the year 1999 I was in Newport Harbor S. California when a replica of the James Cook sailing ship on a world tour was docked at the Newport Marine Museum and I had a opportunity to board her. By today’s standards it was small and the living space between the deck area set up for the soldiers on board for protection was no more than five feet high. To imagine leaving port headed out on the open sea and not knowing what is over the horizon or how long before you reached land and if your food and supply’s would last etc. really made me realize how brave Captain Cook and his sailors were. Truly exceptional and talented men who we owe a gratitude of thanks for expanding our knowledge of the world.😂

Coming from a town of 50% Maori I am well aware of anti Cook sentiment and the lack back fill knowledge of his history. We have been trying to raise education of all navigators particularly the skill of the Polynesians. A Maori friend of mine promoted this with building and sailing from Tahiti to New Zealand in a traditional waka. But we need to realise that there are two cultures and understanding each is important.

He was a Tahitian native who guided Cook across the pacific using the stars the same way maori did to navigate. Didnt you know we are closely related to Tahitians. If you didnt look it up and theres stories of how great people left their ancestors in Tahiti to travel on to discover Hawaii and Aotearoa navigating using the stars and Tupaia was a great navigator who had heard the stories and knew the stars of his ancedtors before him. Too many amazing impossible engineering triumphs we cannot achieve even today with that much precision even with g.p.s.. history is written by the victors obviously, since the perceived losers, don’t get to publish and distribute lies to their subjects. Also, it'll be silly not to use a guide when there's one. One who's place of birth was "stolen" by other Polynesians. He was of great use in New Zealand (which Cook went to because of Tasman's discovery) as he could communicate. None of that in Australia though, nor did he know Australia existed. Cook was a great man and so was Tupaia.

Cook is paraded and held up in lights with history recorded very much in his favour.
I have always thought cook was a glorified pirate and a remarkable fraud, with a lot of talent boosters.
He had use of the chronometer before it was publically available, (and may well have tested its accuracy), and he had aquired unpublished maybe even stolen maps, from the french and dutch, who had already made detailed maps that gave him prior knowledge.

Another great and entertaining recount of history. I thank you for the closing words about this Great man. It sickens me that uneducated people pour scorn on him, and blame him for injustices done by people and governments that came after him. Western Governments and establishments that did come after, have much to answer for for the crimes they committed against the local people. Those times have thankfully past. I acknowledge that past. But I, and my generation should not be held accountable for those atrocities. I'm sorry if these words come across so strongly, but it irks me that the shouts of the few should hold such velum towards the people of today.

Yes but a lot of comments here about Cook is based on information that is only being released now.
How do all those who worship this man based on the documentary, know if this is true, it seems a lot of fake news and proven facts about history being rewritten, is a common practice in the media today.
It's coincidental that it's appearance seems to co-incide with what the majority of the population would like to see and that's the tearing down of monuments, that a reminders of what occured during times that are difficult for others of culture.
It's disrespectful to other people who have sufferered great loss and shows that they only worship their own instead of those that have tried to bring people together.
All of a sudden Cook comes out in modern time as a saint.

In an age when maps were wildly inaccurate Cook was a man apart. He did a five year survey of the coast of Newfoundland creating an unbelievable map that was used into the 20th century, You could lay a modern satellite map over top of Cook's map and they looked almost identical. Pure genius.
Cook advanced to an exalted status in the Royal Navy in an era when people still got ahead based upon high birth. This was not unique to the Royal Navy. The genius of the Royal Navy is that they still made allowances for people of special abilities. Cook was one of those people.
