Jason's close encounter with a stag - Fieldsports Ireland episode 16
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 сер 2024
- Jason is after his first Irish red stag. He has stalked many Scottish red stags and many Irish sika stags, but this is the real red Irish deal. He is in the west of the country, at the height of the rut, guided by a friend, Daniel. Then he is back to Wexford to walk-up pheasants over his mate Stephen's pointer. And, if you have ever wondered how Jason makes his shooting films, he has a special offer for his secret weapon, the Shotkam.

Why shoot deer?
Deer in the UK and Ireland are at their highest level for 1,000 years. Numbers in the UK have doubled since 1999, according to the Deer Initiative, the UK government’s deer agency.
Deer are an attractive and an important part of our wildlife. However, they have no natural predator in the UK so numbers must be sensibly and strategically managed to keep them in balance with their habitat and to prevent damage to crops, trees, woodland flora, gardens and other wildlife.
Deer cause £4.5 million-worth (Forestry Commission Scotland) of damage to plantations and other commercial woodlands in Scotland. Crop damage is estimated at £4.3m a year according to DEFRA, with the greatest damage on cereal crops in east and south-west England.
More than 8,000 hectares (Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology) of woodland with SSI status is currently in ‘unfavourable’ or ‘recovering’ condition due to deer impacts such as browsing and fraying. Deer can also influence the variety of wildlife in woodlands and other habitats by altering structural and plant species diversity. According to the University of East Anglia’s Dr Paul Dolman, that has resulted in a 50% decline in woodland bird numbers where deer are present, impacting particularly on nightingales, blackcaps, chiffchaffs and warblers.
Deer are susceptible to Bovine TB and may be responsible for the transmission of TB to cattle. They are also the likely driver behind the UK’s increasing tick population (Scharlemann et al 2008).
Happily, venison is a delicious meat. It is wild, natural and free range, and - almost fat-free - it is one of the healthiest meats available today. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Venison is high in protein, low in saturated fatty acids and contains higher levels of iron than any other red meat.

Excellent show Jason! Great to see traditional Irish rough shooting. You really showed the beauty of Irish sport, all hunting made possible by the generosity of the landowners and the respect shown by the gun clubs, we're blessed to have such a tradition alive and well. Accessible game shooting for all and not just those who can afford it. I would love to see a section in the episodes dedicated to how different gun clubs around the country are operating. That stag is one that you wont forget, keep up the good work!
Heart was pumping just watching that stalk! Awesome film Jason well done mate
Great to see a bit of traditional rough shooting, fine handy ground in Wexford you could wear your Sunday best and still go to mass after.
Johnkkgleeson I remember skipping mass to go shooting in my Sunday best as a kid 😂
By far the best episode ever 👍👍 looks like lough erne in the background lol. Proper Irish sportsmanship by all 👌👌
Thanks Darren. Glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoyed that, big thanks to Jason, Daniel and everyone else involved.
Niel McG thank you!
Good dayeveryone .,
Another great video, awesome footage, many thanks for sharing keep it up and best regards from New Zealand in Down Under.
Great video really captured the intensity of the moment
What a fantastic show this month. Perfectly sums up the amazing hunting we have in Ireland and the UK.
Benn Whitford thank you!
No wonder the adrenaline kicked in when you came across that big old boy. Great film Jason.
Matt Cartwright thank you. Was super exciting
Well the pheasant and pigeon were much easier to carry than the Stag. That was a great stalk and that feeling when your Stag was down, just like when we take a White Tail Buck over here in Canada. I find there's always a little sadness too in taking such a fine animal, but knowing that this is food for the table soon changes all that and the knowledge that the animal was taken ethically and with respect makes all the difference. Thanks for the great video Jason, take an Irish Pony with you next time, make the pulling easier .
applejack120 thank you sir. Glad you enjoyed it. A pony would have been ideal.
Well Jason another superb video, few people can get across the true felling of a stalk like you did on this video.
The walked up shooting for me is the best way to enjoy a day out big bags do nothing for me, however the benefits are plain to see for well organised driven days.
Looking forward to your next video.
red stag thanks for the comment. It’s rare a stalk comes together on film like this but it was crazy exciting. Was a bit disappointed the camera couldn’t capture the shot properly but we can’t get it every time!
Well done on the stag great retrieve just shows how much effort it can take.
Now this, is an enjoyable video, thank you Jason.
Nothing like the 'real thing' to watch!
Great film again. Very enjoyable keep them coming.
Well done Jason.. that was some stalk and what a fine animal.Great episode keep them comming.
What a beast that stag was fair play for persevering and getting him out
more of the traditional rough shooting!!
Awsome stalk Jason, can't believe it's your first irish red
Great video guys. Keep up the great work. Always look forward to yer vids when they come out.
That stalk was epic and the extraction shows the effort in getting a red out of a bog 😂😂😂
M Devine I won’t be doing it again for a while that’s for sure
Jason Doyle it’s one way of kissing goodbye to a disk in your back😄
A quad is your only man if available!
Aside from that you are doing an excellent job at the helm of fieldsports Ireland you’re content is very professional and you are doing the shooting community here in Ireland proud.....fair play Jason🇮🇪👍🏻
Really great show. Keep them coming and make sure you get up north for a show or two
Wow that was an exiting hunt Jason, and what an epic retrieve. Yet another great show well done .
Brilliant show this month Jason, well done mate!!
Really really enjoyed that what a great watch the stalking was so epic felt I was part of the hunt great ep Jason
Medicated Flowers thanks so much and I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I loved the suspense on the stag hunt, it was palpable even through the video and I would love if there was more walked up rough shooting where i live, it looks like great fun!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
well stalked , well done . i loved the rough shooting with the side by side , its just nice to step back in years and do it old school ..
roy jennison thanks Roy I completely agree. Love going low tech every once in a while
Enjoyed that one Jason, Dan and Stephen

Great episode as already mentioned by Simon B. Well made and well done. You performed a very exciting stalk. You had the margins on your side this time Jason.
Thumbs up and greetings from Norway :-)
Great show again lads, you'll have to do a day on the woodcock Jason
Tom Callanan already planning it for January!
That's the job, looking forward to it!
Jason best episode yet . The whole family here in Offaly really enjoy your show espically by 2 lads 6 and 8 yr old . Some exciting footage of the stalk and the pheasant shooting was class . The boys come out with me and said it was so like our type of hunting hope we see more of it in the future. Keep up the good work and Stay Safe 👍🏼👍🏼👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🦌
What a great vid. I felt like I was right beside you. I've never stalked deer before. I can't wait to get out and give it a go. Well done
silatdan thanks so much for the comment. It was quite an emotional hunt for me. The venison was made sweeter by the experience
Great video fellas, some lovely memories right there.
Good job on the red good show all round 👍
What a great show guys👍
Great episode 👌🏼
Great show and what a great stalk I know how you feel them big boys take some shifting
Great video jason well done
another good one keep it up .
Mate, when a video makes someone smile, it's achieved its goal! Awesome stalking and that rough shooting, a few for the table, class act! Nice one! My hand is up if you're ever looking for somewhere else to film in Scotland! Perthshire.... 👍👍
Josh Burton thanks so much, that’s exactly the reaction I hope to get. Thanks for the invite too, would love to hunt in Perthshire.
That was a brilliant episode very well done.
Brian Whelan thanks a mill
enjoyed the camera work well done
great show as always jason 👍
Rural Pest Control Whitwell thank you!
Great to see the rough shooting videos.
That stag was some size.
great video
Well done JD, brilliant stalk. Gilo
Thank you sir
Great video Jason. Been there have the injuries quad is your friend with the red's and a quad with a winch aswell. Nothing worse than not being able to get close enough with the quad and having to drag a couple hundred yards and it takes 4 hours and your striped to the waste and ready for hospital and the works only began. Got a monster in sligo one morning 30 yards from the forest road and by the time we got it to the trailer there was a winch on order lol. Great hunt!!
Nice Stag Jason. I was always taught not to chamber a round with the rifle pointing skywards?
pricketfella one it’s a point than comes up quite often. My preference is for pointed into the ground but I know lots who are happy with a safe direction. A mixture of circumstance and awkward body position caused me to chamber skyward in this piece and I did cringe when I watched it back. Just shows the small mistakes we can make when the blood is up.
@@jasondoyle6061 fair play bud.
Brilliant video Jason from start to finish I love using my S/S shotgun Great 👍 video
How/why did anyone give this a thumbs down??......GREAT show, keep it up! :-)
Adrian Hurley Begrudgers!
Jeez... not even an Argo to help extract it? Respect to you!
Brilliant episode, exciting to watch red stag stalk and loved the walked up bit with a sbs and pointer, more of the same please! A breath of fresh air after all the boring political/anti stuff on fieldsports britain
That stag looked like hard work to drag out of the bush. Definitely miss the gym on that day since you already got your workout.
That's great footage of both hunts, a real sense of excitement and achievement. Haven't shot a side by side in years but they are a joy to carry for sure. Are you planning to film any driven days?
Thanks Mark. Yes we filmed a driven day at Birr Castle last weekend for the December show.
Great episode as always Jason. This is my first season deer stalking and my permission is very small but there are a few reds on it. I’ve drawn a blank so far but I was expecting as much. Seeing the effort you guys had to move that fella has me worried. What are your thoughts on doing it the way the yanks do and field butchering it and making a few trips out with it?
kranob1 we do sometimes field butcher on the mountain. In hindsight we should have done it with this stag but we had no meat bags or any way to protect the meat. The plan was to hopefully find one closer to a track 😂
Hollywood next boys ..were u trying 2 kiss that stag j are u gone a bit Quare 🤣🤣🤣🤘😎
Luke Askins I’ve kissed worse!
Again brilliant show. What is the crop in the video at 15,35. It's very long but looks great for testing pointers
It was a turnip field that's grown as fodder for sheep.
Is the green tape 2 stop the sticks from making noises in the wind?
Browning Maxus yep! I prefer tape to the sleeves that come with them.
Bit late but this was incredible
Great vid Jason. I felt like I was stalking with you!
What rifle were you using? Calibre? Bullet?
Jim thank you. It’s a Savage 110 High Country in .270 shooting Hornady Precision Hunter 145g.
@@jasondoyle6061 thanks Jason. I'm after a new rifle. I only have a really old. 243 but after an all round rifle. What would you recommend?
It’s like choosing a car Jim. Depends on what you want it to do and your budget. So many good rifles out there now. I’m really enjoying using the Savage and they are great value. You’ve got Bergara, Tikka and Remington in the same price bracket and all great guns. If you want something fancier it’s hard to beat sako for me although I do love the blasers too. There are other great rifles that I don’t have personal experience of but a good RFD will keep you right. Where are you based?
@@jasondoyle6061 I'm based in Newcastle mate. I have a tikka which is great but it's right handed and I'm left. I only bought it because it was cheap to see if I enjoyed stalking. Now its all I want to do haha. I've been looking at the sakos to be honest but not sure on calibre. I want to get out and do more stalking as have only stalked on roe so needs to be an all round calibre. Someone told me the. 270 would be fine for everything then someone says 6.5 creedmoor. To be honest it has got my head battered. Plus I would always use factory loads. Any advice would be much appreciated
.270 is my favorites caliber for most of my hunts. It works extremely well and I would prefer it for all but the smaller deer species. Jury is out on the Creedmore as a hunting round for me, I’ve got one at the moment and it’s lovely to shoot but I’m not convinced by it’s killing power on sika. Time will tell
Hi Jason, could you recommend a guide for hunting reds in the west of Ireland, please?
Didn`t think there were enough trees out west for stags to live..thought we just had em in wicklow.
Out west is the home of them!
great video as always
where did you buy the savage really nice looking rifle
intolead thank you! Ardee Sports supplied the Savage.
I recon if you had doe called that Red Stag, he would have come straight in...
Jason, when you going to do some shooting with the 6.5 creedmoor round ?
Elfin4 next month!
@@jasondoyle6061 What will you be hunting ? No matter, looking forward to the video.
There only for girls😊😁
Great job but bro quarter that big guy up like we do Elk here in the Western US, your going to ruin your back dragging that guy, he is almost as big as a elk.
what's the name of the song where you pull the deer out? :)
10/28 Doyle you wouldent pull a maggot out of a cowshit SAUSAGE
williecosgrove this is true! Lowland reds take some pulling.
@@jasondoyle6061 had to cut 1 in half myself to get him out of a bog
Just one thing it doesn't make good tv but don't some shoots gut the Stag before retrieving ? would be a bit lighter lo.l Great endurance doing the Stag justice
Dave Bee we did gralloch it before dragging.
Great hunt, good to see deer around in the homeland. Why don't ye skin and quarter that deer out instead? We would do that with elk .
Brilliant j lad any chance you can stop political response from field sports channel
Not sure you should shoot such beautiful animals .But if you must don’t film it 😟
