Great vid. For many years I would take 6-8 large index cards and pass through the sewing machine at the center fold on the stitch and trim even on 3 sides for a pocket note book.
I just got several orders for these (which means I have to make a bunch this week) and thought maybe I'd re-share this older project. It's a quick and easy one, but such a handy thing to have around!
liam williamson Honestly I don't remember the name of the site now, but I just searched for custom rubber stamps and found a place that did it pretty cheaply. If you have access to a CNC machine, you can make them very easily with it.
After saying you were going to show us how to make notebooks and then it went into the intro of cutting wood, torching wood, and cutting metal my immediate thought was "that's gonna be a crazy notebook"
You make it look so easy, I gave it a go. I had tools except for paper cutter, and as such, everything kept being uneven. I made a notebook eventually, but it ain't for public consumption. Thanks good video.
This and Sea Lemon's vids are what I have to thank for making my own notebooks and sketchbooks without having to spend too much money! The only thing that I wish this video included was slowly cutting the edge of the finished notebook with an exacto knife/box-cutting knife and ruler to people that do want an even edge option. 📓📔📒
And now i'm kicking myself because I didn't think of making my own pocket notebooks before buying a three pack. Cool video and I like the different Ideas for covers which makes them your own and have less chance of others having the same notebook.
Hey Bob! That's a great idea, I tend to burn through notebooks pretty fast. What's your policy on people monetizing your ideas? I recently started a store myself to support my own UA-cam channel and would love to sell some notebooks of my own, but I really don't want to step on any toes. Cheers!
Switch & Lever Thanks so much for asking, I appreciate that! I don't mind people monetizing the ideas. I didn't research it, but SURELY I'm not the first person to show how these are made, so I can't assume any ownership over the idea. Mainly, I was just sick of paying for Field Notes ;) Good luck!
I Like To Make Stuff You didn't invent the notebook? Hehe! Thanks man, I appreciate it. It's still the right thing to do to ask, especially since you're also trying to make a living. I may throw up a video as well about it, I'll be sure to give you a shout out! Cheers!
Saddle stitching, you notice how the inner pages tend to extend out a bit beyond the outer pages and cover, in the printing industry we call that "creep" and on booklets with a bunch of pages we had to compensate for that by moving the images progressively in toward the spine on the inner pages, then after saddle stitching take the booklets to a high speed paper cutter and cut off the open end....not to go on, but we also set the books up in signature format. Yeah was in the printing industry for 40 years...
***** Ah, didn't know that had a name, but yes I saw it as soon as I started making them. I went back on some and trimmed off the excess, but without a powerful cutter, that's pretty tedious. Thanks for the info!
This was on my homepage. Glad I watched. I have seen a few videos on making notebooks, but this looks like the easiest for me. I have a lot of loose paper that would be great for making pocket notebooks
Cool project - I like the variety of your content and how clear and concise your videos are. You make everything look quick and easy. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, an old RIDERS manual. I haven't seen one of those in a while, not since my father used to collect antique radios. No one does component level repair anymore...
as I use 2 or 3 of the old black composition notebooks a year, these are a great addition....I like the size of the small version composition books but only the large ones come with graph paper option...so these solve that....plus, the first one i made i used heavy paper (no bristol board at home) but then layered that with floral fabric....I like to build furniture but I enjoy a girly notebook to carry around my plans..... thanks so much for your details...will be hunting for the corner trimmer....
If you pick up aa "Pouncing Wheel" at a Fabric Store, you can run it down a vertical line on each page of the graph paper and make the pages perforated for easy removal.
Looks pretty nice, I think I'll put it on my bucket list for next year. Is there a way to make them a little bit water resistant? I would like to use some old transcriptions for the cover, but it's all old paper and I'm worried it will not last long.
I'm sure they dont make that paper trimmer anymore or anything like it. I like how it had a slide out thing to line it up with ya measurement been looking for one like that and cant seem to find one.
Have you had any problems with them holding up at all with the materials used? And how have the corner punch and paper cutter held up to the task? Thanks!
Great video, thank you! Do you have a listing somewhere of the exact tools you use? I'm having a hard time finding a good corner rounder, and like the one you use in the video.
Cool, I screen print and always hit up SXSW Flatstock Show and those flatstock guys make these from the scrap French Paper flatstock from their print runs.
Hey. It could be interesting to have a part 2 showing how to properly bind a book, since this technique won't work with more than a few pages. And showing how to make the back of the book sewn, for real nice notebooks. Possible for a home-maker ? Don't know. But could be interesting to learn.
Shop around and you can find a cheap passport cover to use as a cover for your notebook - this would put it in the area of approx. 3 1/2 x 5 1/4" ish size. Which is still a very manageable size.
I'm wondering if you could apply the same techniques for recreating operating manuals for power tools; I bought a table-top drill press second-hand, but it didn't come with an operating manual!
VERY nice! But I have questions. What is that mat thing you are working on and what size is it? For that punch, do you happen to have a link to that. Admittedly, I'm google-challenged but all I'm finding are things to punch holes, not nip corners.
If you don't have a long-throated stapler, you can use this little trick: Stack about three or four pieces of scrap corrugated cardboard under your work and flip your stapler open into the "tacking" position. Carefully lay out your project and staple through the spine and into the cardboard. Then, simply pull the book off and press down the staple ends with your fingertip or any plastic tool. Not elegant, but it gets the job done. BTW, I love your notebook, and I'm going to make some this week!
Waylon Otto My store calculates shipping based on location, so you'd just have to add it to cart and start the checkout process to find out for sure. If you're in the US, shouldn't be too much.. I shipped some to Belgium today and shipping was almost as much as the notebooks :/
I have a question! The books you cover with things like comics or easily tearible types of paper, what do you do to seal them? In and out of pockets and bags all days destroy mine. Packaging tape is a fine "poorman's" laminate, but any other help would be greatly appreciated!
wooow this video is 9 years old?? i love how timeless it is!! today i made some pocket notebooks with linoleum scraps from the floor :)
My list of things I want to make keeps getting bigger. Way to go, Bob.
Matthew Cremona Sweet! That's what I'm going for!
This one's so quick and easy! Might have to make some myself!
Great vid. For many years I would take 6-8 large index cards and pass through the sewing machine at the center fold on the stitch and trim even on 3 sides for a pocket note book.
jimmydiresta Thanks! Yeah, that's a great idea with the sewing machine!
awesome... I always carry field note type notebooks. Thanks for the instructions
If you have access to a CNC machine, you can make them very easily with it.
can you make a mini pool table pls
+liam williamson you can look on vistaprint.com they have lots of personalized things including stamps.
How much do you sell a three pack for?
***** Unfortunately I don't have time to make them anymore, so I don't sell them in my store these days :/
I am so glad this video still exists.
9 years later and I still come back to this video every couple months as a refresh before I make more books to replace the full ones 😁😁😁
Noiceee 😄
After saying you were going to show us how to make notebooks and then it went into the intro of cutting wood, torching wood, and cutting metal my immediate thought was "that's gonna be a crazy notebook"
That was cool! I just saw these for sale on your site this weekend and thought, "He should make a video!"
Peter Brown Thanks Peter! yeah, I got them up early on the store for some reason.. I think I'm just impatient :)
You make it look so easy, I gave it a go. I had tools except for paper cutter, and as such, everything kept being uneven. I made a notebook eventually, but it ain't for public consumption. Thanks good video.

I love how customizable they are. I'm thinking about Christmas gifts and favors for themed parties.
G
Great simple project! My wife teaches creative writing and her kids would love these for writing journals.
And now i'm kicking myself because I didn't think of making my own pocket notebooks before buying a three pack. Cool video and I like the different Ideas for covers which makes them your own and have less chance of others having the same notebook.
This just gave me the perfect way to show off my designs and sell something useful that also shows off my designs
This is probably the easiest yet still beutiful tutorial I have seen so far, thanks!!
Loved this idea. On my second batch of ten using Old Training Navigation Chart as cover and graph paper inside. The last batch was wildly popular.
It's December 2020 and I am searching for a good gift for my friends, then, I saw this. Thank you.
I forgot how much I love this channel
This video is so helpful, making it so much easier than so many other of these videos!
just took me 5-10min and now I have a good pocket notebook
Hi I'm a newbie, just saw your UA-cam channel and let me just tell you my man, you are absolutely brilliant!! Your title fits you just right.❤👍
I did some research to find a good corner punch and lo and behold it's the same one you use in the video!
Simple, effective and they look really classy. I have some old maps and technical drawings that would be great for this. Thanks for sharing Bob.
Hah! "I used these common household items, and this one random thing no one has" awesome video though dude. Love your stuff!
What a unique little notebook for guys!!! Love your choice for the cover. Off to the thrift store to find a book like this 🙂
Love the pocket notebooks Bob!
Thanks Linn!

What is the brand of corner puncher you show there? Looks pretty solid. All other available ones look quite disposable.
Cool project - I like the variety of your content and how clear and concise your videos are. You make everything look quick and easy. Thanks for sharing.
Michael Natrin Thanks so much Michael! I try hard and it's always really encouraging to hear that.. THANK YOU!
Very helpful, especially getting the staple central. Inspired by your movie poster idea, too.

Seems like the cover's width needed to be 4-5 mm wider to accomodate for the folding pages inside.
Great job. I've been using small notebooks for years and call them my memory. They also don't require batteries!
That Intro with the sounds. Awesome man!
If you pick up aa "Pouncing Wheel" at a Fabric Store, you can run it down a vertical line on each page of the graph paper and make the pages perforated for easy removal.
So simple and way cheaper in the long run instead of buying moleskine or Leuchtturm pocket notebooks!
I love how the design on the outside looks
You should do a face trim on the book before rounding the corners
Do a video on how to make a stamp.
Sounds complicated!
loved the Tube schematic cover.
great work like always! - I just ordered a 3 pack (i have a slight addiction to note books)
uploaded on my birthday thanks

I use a disc sander to round notebook corners. Cleans up the edges too.
Very cool man! So damn simple and customizable... yet most ppl will just buy pre made ones. I need to make some of my own. Love it, keep it up!
LOVE these ideas these are good for me and grandfather!!!
Yus :) now I know how to make it
Have you had any problems with them holding up at all with the materials used? And how have the corner punch and paper cutter held up to the task? Thanks!
Funny this video came out I just started making leather book covers for this style of notebook. It is a great cub scout project.
If I make the size any larger, at what scales would you recommend making it? Would you recommend using more staples depending on the size?
Great video, thank you! Do you have a listing somewhere of the exact tools you use? I'm having a hard time finding a good corner rounder, and like the one you use in the video.
Cool, I screen print and always hit up SXSW Flatstock Show and those flatstock guys make these from the scrap French Paper flatstock from their print runs.
Thanks, for the video I made some from an old X-Men Essintials collection I got from my Library used book sale. Keep up the great work.
You have incredible tools... those makes look things so easy...
Hmm this would be good for batch production, but what would you use for mass production?
I'm sponsored by field notes. But this is pretty cool seeing someone make a diy version of them.
Hey. It could be interesting to have a part 2 showing how to properly bind a book, since this technique won't work with more than a few pages. And showing how to make the back of the book sewn, for real nice notebooks.

This is really cool and nice it must be hard making them handmade I wonder how many people bought it and how many you made
jokerpoker133 Thanks! I've probably made 200 of them and just recently stopped selling them in my store. It was just taking up too much time.
What is that sweet schematics book used at the beginning of the video around 28 seconds?
It's a Rider Perpetual Troubleshooters manual (Volume 14) I found it for SUPER cheap on ebay
Awesome thanks for the quick response!
what would i need to do to put more papers in? the staple wouldn't go through all of them, right? i like my notebooks for longer period of time
Super cool, I'll probably be making one of these some day!
Hi there! By any chance, are ypu using the We R Memory Keeper Corner punch in this video? Thank you in advance 😊
Thoughts on a good stapler, that had better reach? I tried to customize mine, and completely lost the spring to make it work
congratulations fr ur 500,000 subscribera
You are my hero!!!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful project!!

Nice and informative vid. I will use this as a guide for my final project. Thanks.
These are awesome! Now I need to invest in a corner punch. Heh. Thanks for sharing. :)
I'm wondering if you could apply the same techniques for recreating operating manuals for power tools; I bought a table-top drill press second-hand, but it didn't come with an operating manual!
Hi! I know this is (very) late but may I know what brand/model that cornerpunch is? I'm also going to use it on my bookbinding journey. Thank you!
I don't know why, but I thought you'd make it out of wood xD
Rey Rey same here xD
but he did... paper is made from wood. :p
@@scarletrose1326 you are technically correct. The best kind of correct.
Rey Del Rey dude same lol
Me too i was like wtf??
Thanks for this just made 2 yesterday looking forward to making more tommorow
Man u just nailed it. I surely gonna make this!
It broke my heart to see you tear that page out of that repair manual - looks like a collector's item in it's own right.
They're a dime a dozen on eBay. And it wasn't exactly in great shape when I got it.
I Like To Make Stuff Yeah, that's what I figured - who'd ruin an antique just for a book cover - but still, it's just so _COOL_ looking... :-)
Exactly why I got it!! :) And the fact that it has several HUNDRED pages of schematics for $5. It's pretty amazing to flip through
Can you please make some more of these cool pocket notebooks? I love them!!!
Cool, I have some old anatomy textbooks that would make for some awesome covers.
That's really clever thank you for the idea, I'm going to make some of these for groceries lists.
VERY nice! But I have questions. What is that mat thing you are working on and what size is it?
For that punch, do you happen to have a link to that. Admittedly, I'm google-challenged but all I'm finding are things to punch holes, not nip corners.
It's an OLFA 18x24 cutting may. There's a link in the description to my site with links to all of the tools. Good luck!

BTW, I love your notebook, and I'm going to make some this week!
Nice. Thanks for the information. They might be good gifts too.
This is so cool. Great video.
Who do you recommend for a custom paper stamp?
Very nice!
Drunken Woodworker Thanks!
Awesome!
How did you make The stamp ?
Can you possibly make a light board? Graphic Designers use those and I would love to make my own!
I love all your videosss
these are really cool just wondering how much cost would be with shipping
Waylon Otto My store calculates shipping based on location, so you'd just have to add it to cart and start the checkout process to find out for sure. If you're in the US, shouldn't be too much.. I shipped some to Belgium today and shipping was almost as much as the notebooks :/
sorry must of missed it last night I figured it out now thanks
Real quick and ea.. (intro comes) what thee whaaa
Thank you!!! I'm going to make lots of these!!
They look so cool

hi bob, i like your stuff!
Where did you get your kind of corner punch? Do you have an Amazon list for the other stuff you need?
+John Zutz I've got a full list of everything I used at www.iliketomakestuff.com/pocket-notebook/
ive been looking for the corner punch like that for a long time!! if i buy something from your list at amazon, it could be a support , right?
noname583 Yes! Anything purchased through one of my links will help support me. Thanks!!
Finally something I can make
Great tutorial, thanks!
I just finished mine! I applied too much glue, though... Anyway! It looks great and I use these kind of pocke notebooks a lot. Thank you :)
didn't know about Corner Punch.
thanks for the info
