It’s a complete scam. It’s been obvious since they started showing off the ‘prototypes’ and Gary’s behaviour surrounding the accusations levelled towards it has been less than professional to say the least. The nail in the coffin was Gary self-funding the kickstarter, something which is very much against kickstarter’s policy.
I can't speak to the ethics of FND but the *concept* is fine, even as a rehoused reusable if it's metal that still puts it above stuff like the M35, also having motorized advance is nice. But I do agree that if someone was new to film (which is what this is targeting) I'd recommend some of the more characterful reusables like the RETO Ultrawide (which is like 30 dollars) or the Kodak H35N before reccomending this

Why? It's an AF, non-retractable fixed lens piece costing around 8-16x more than an original one. The original 35 has a great, time-proven lens. They're fixable by many techs still. They're fully mechanical and have been reliable for half a century. I don't understand why anyone would shell out $800 for an unproven point-and-shoot. They're developed and manufactured by MiNT, who have acquired naming rights only, and feature a mixed track record on their previous products. Rollei, the company, had absolutely nothing to do with the development, and has nothing to do with manufacturing.

Looking forward to all these cameras, even the Film Never Die metal disposable. I already own an Alfie Tych and it's one of my favorite half-frame cameras I own. It's VERY compact and basically travels with me everywhere, and takes the best half-frame shots outside of a Pen F
Compared to the Pentax17, do you think the Alfie makes any sense to own? They are the same price and the Pentax seems far better. I own the Pentax17 and really do enjoy it. I would consider and Alfie but just does not seem worth the price.
@@cwantuch I think that's a great question! I think ultimately whichever you go for you're going to be happy they're both great cameras. Upgrade? Hardly. The "new" Rollei 35AF is connected to the old Rollei 35 only in that whoever holds the tradename rights to the old Rollei brand got paid to use the name and a superficial likeness in appearance. The internal mechanisms are completely different. Until recently, there was no useful information about the lens. The price of film is very sensitive to production volume. Once you set up the line and get it running, the more film you produce in one run, the lower the cost per roll. Even though I'm not in the market for a 1/2 frame camera, or any new camera really, I am hoping they sell a lot of them so that film production will go up and drive prices down. Right now color is made by Kodak, Fujifilm and (recently) Harmon. Kodak (USA), Harmon (UK), Foma (Czech) and Ferrania (Italy) make B&W. The 35af price has been known for some time now. Even before the Pentax 17 came out. That’s one of the reasons the Pentax 17 seemed so expensive for what it is.
I suspect that traditional film manufacturing often used chemicals that are difficult to source today. They may be toxic to people and the environment. My problem with the Pentax 17 is... what's the point? The exact same camera we could've made 40 years ago and we did... there's plenty of film cameras out there... if they want me to buy a new film camera in 2024/25 it needs to do something that my cameras that i already have or could buy for significantly less can't do... and the only thing i see them doing that actually fits in there is AF which i'm really not interested in
I mostly agree. What we need is better film emulsions. Like, if Kodak added just one more layer to any of their b&w emulsions, the latitude would be more than any digital camera, photo or vine. Two extra layers, and latitude goes off the charts. So we need new film, not new cameras. Not yet, anyway.
Who cares? It's not a real Rollei. I don't think that Rollei is even a German company anymore. It's just a trademark, a brand name, and last time I heard, it was bought by the Belgian holding company which primarily owns Schneider.
The literal design is a 1:1 copy of an ali cam. The only difference is a rehouse. The creator was called out by multiple big creators for this, and they continued to refuse to answer if it was. Then the creator ended the kickstarter by self funding (which is illegal by KS TOS). FND disables comments, hides comments and never answers any questions regarding… “development”. With the Pentax 17, Rollei 35AF, Widelux and other stuff being designed I’ll be honest I’m not sure why you’d back the FND stuff. No insult meant by that but the cost of the camera relative to it being a sub 10$ cam is kind of insulting to film enthusiasts. It’s predatory.

pentax 17 is grabage half frame, wtf
@@Biosynchro completely utterly uninteresting... dynamic range is a buzzword that is completely irrelevant to 99.999999% of photographers
Rollei is NOT pronounced as Roly! I know it is hard for English speaking people, but Rollei is a German brand! Try row·lai!
Row like row row row your boat?
Yes, that’s far closer. 😊
Who cares? It's not a real Rollei. I don't think that Rollei is even a German company anymore. It's just a trademark, a brand name, and last time I heard, it was bought by the Belgian holding company which primarily owns Schneider.
yeah I know I know. Just be glad you're not hearing me say 'bag' every video, lol
This sh* toy cameras are a big NO. What people really want is the relaunch of nikon fm10, vivitar 3800n, pentax k1000 etc..
I bought a few sh*t toy cameras, and i agree. I need a real camera.
As someone who backed the kickstarter, it would be very disappointing if the FND camera was just an Alibaba rehash. Where did this info originate?
It’s predatory.
oof
😬
The rollei Is a fully manual camera not a point and shoot
Although the sample images look like one lul oh no
it has autofocus so can be shot like a point and shoot.
I would like rebirth of Nikon EM Or Nikon fg small easy sharp light weight handy and build quality very strong
Ohh a new Nikon EM would be slick!
Just not the FM10 please!
