They are a really interesting band, their sound is quiet diverse yet u can always hear their own style imprinted on it. They have a lot of fun making music and i think it really comes across in every one of their tracks.

Very cool reaction Eric. For the name, the ch is soft as in chair. The name comes from the gachapon machine where you crank the handle and get a random toy - but in this case you never know how the song is going to sound instead! :)
They have a long history with a few member changes, but the core of bass (koga), guitar (Tomo-zo), keys (Oreo) and drums/guitar/everything (hana) have been together over 10 years. The new drummer (Yuri), and Pink Haired energiser bunny vocalist (Angie) are additions since 2019 (this track was from 2021).
Koga lists her primary influence as Les Claypool, so good spot on the Primus influence - prominent slap bass is one of the more consistent aspects of their sound.
They indeed have energy for days - it would be great for you to check out some of their live stuff to and experience that. Normally I would suggest the MV for "I wish I" next, but they have an official live with English lyrics which would be a good contrast to Mindset, whilst also getting the live experience. It's the one at 豊洲PIT
p.s. although young ladies may be appropriate relative to you :) should say that the core members are all now mid-thirties, Angie joined the band at 17 and is now 21.

Pronounced gotcha-rick spin. They have been around for a long time, and have gone through quite a few lineup changes/reinventions. Angelina 1/3 (pink hair) who joined the band at 17 years old is at least 10 years younger than the rest of the band and has really given them a jolt of fresh energy. The bassist F Chopper Koga is one of the best bassists in Japan. They cover a lot of stylistic territory with their music, from funky to rap to ballads to ultra hype to metal screams to borderline prog, all delivered at maximum intensity. A bucket list band for me to see live.
If you want to continue on with them, you might try "I Wish I" MV ua-cam.com/video/-R6Nrr_omjE/v-deo.html or "Kachi Kachi Yama" MV ua-cam.com/video/r6a1v8q5AZ4/v-deo.html or this live mashup of two other new songs, "Reverse Psychology" and "The Come Up Chapter": ua-cam.com/video/eEFYh3WiybA/v-deo.html

I love Gacharic Spin. They actually have a sixth member, the adorable drummer Yuri, but I believe she was on maternity leave during this video shoot. The drummer in this video, Hana, switched from drums to guitar in 2019 but still occasionally gets behind the kit. Yuri's a badass drummer, though. The current six-piece lineup of Gacharic Spin has been in place since 2019. While they were damn good before then, they're great now. They've played shows with Nemophila and holy shit can we get that tour in the States!?
I scanned the comments and didn't see anything about Doll$Boxx, but I probably missed it. Doll$boxx was/is a side project with Gacharic Spin members Hana on drums, Koga on bass, Tomo-zo on guitar, and Oreo on keyboards joining with vocalist Fuki of Unlucky Morpheus. They've only released one abblum and one EP five years apart, but their Doll$Boxx is definitely worth visiting. "Take My Chance" has a great video. Here's the link.

Gacharic Spin is an uncategorizable or very difficult to categorize mystery bag with a long and partly complicated history, which is however worth a closer look and explains a lot about the ladies. :)
I'll try to keep it short:
Bassist 'F Choppa Koga' (or just Choppa or Koga) is the founder of GS together with Hana (here on drums) who joined forces in 2009. A few months later, guitarist Tomo-Zo followed and together with vocalist Armmy the first line-up was complete. However, Armmy left the band in 2012 due to health reasons (and passed away in 2015 for unknown reasons).
As a result, they brought keyboardist Oreo Reona (usually just called Oreo) on board, who took over the vocals together with Hana (Dr.). Since the two of them were quite tied up by their instruments, they added 2 dancers/stage performers a little later, which you will see if you watch earlier videos of GS.
This concept was maintained until 2017/2018, when the stage performers gradually went their own ways.
Still with me? Well, take a deep breath, because here comes the slightly more complicated part. :)
Hana said another change had to happen, or she was out. The first change she made was about herself, when she gave up the place on the drums and played mainly guitar from now on. The vacant place on the drums has since been taken over by Yuri, who you don't see here because she was on maternity leave during that time. That's why you see Hana on the drums again here.
At about the same time, Koga discovered Angie, who was just 17 at the time, at a school festival and asked her to participate in the audition for GS's new microphone performer, which she won. So we have the current line-up of GS, which looks like the following.
    » F Choppa Koga (bass)
    » Hana (guitar, vocals)
    » Tomo-Zo (guitar)
    » Oreo Reona (keyboard, vocals)
    » Yuri (drums)
» Angelina 1/3 or Angie (vocals) // 1/3 because her roots are Japanese, Spanish as well as Filipino.
Believe me, just as adventurous as their story will be your further journey with these ladies. :) But if I may be allowed to say so, in my opinion they are one of the most talented and creative bands I know, whose name should be much more well-known than it is. And I don't know another one who brings more energy on stage!
My recommendation is, as others have already written, their song 'I Wish I', which shows quite well how versatile they are. :)
Well, that should be enough for now. 😇

It isn't my understanding that Hana was planning on quitting
IIRC, the original idea was a new singer would join with Angie and both Hana and Oreo would step back from vocals and focus on playing, then the new singer dropped out just before they announced the change and they decided it would be easier to get another drummer than find another singer they liked, so Hana switched to guitar and vocals and they got Yuri instead

@@homegnome2429 I think we might be referring to the same thing but from different angles, the original change was that she wasn't going to drum and sing anymore, just drum and give full attention to that
Then the singer they got lined up dropped out and they decided to flip it around and make Hana the singer as she had already done guitar and vocals when TMZ had been ill, and they had found finding a singer who worked a long and exhausting process and didn't want to repeat

GS started in 2009 and still has 3 original members.
    Hana: drums, vocals, guitar
    TOMO-ZO: lead guitar, vocals
F Chopper Koga, or just Koga: bass. The keyboard player, Oreo, joined in 2012. They recently added Angelina 1/3, Angie, with the pink hair, on vocals and Rina on drums so Hana can play guitar. Their music has taken a new direction, more energetic and complex.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT Рік тому +2

Tomo-zo isn't an original member. The original guitarist was Eita, who still records solo releases (I actually recently saw a streamed show by her) and went on to form a band Takaeita with the GS original vocalist (Armmy) a year after Armmy left GS in 2012. They remained a band until Armmy (Ashitomi Takae) passed away in 2015. Eita left GS after half a year and never recorded anything with them, so Tomo-zo is close to an original member, but she technically isn't. The keyboard player Oreo played with Tomo-zo in the band EU Phoria and became an official member in 2012 (after Armmy left) after a short trial period while they also used a lot of guest vocalist including Fuki of Unlucky Morpheus and Light Bringer back then.
Also, the new drummer's name is yuri instead of Rina. She was actually close to being Bridear's new drummer in 2019 and was already announced by Bridear for a trialout, but in the end she went for Gacharic Spin instead and Bridear got an other great drummer in Natsumi.

I was really impressed when you brought up Extreme, because not too many people got past "More Than Words" to appreciate Nuno's funk percussive strumming. But when you brought up Infectious Grooves 🤯 Much respect. Your a man who walks the walk lol. Rocky George was a big idol of mine, so of course my love for Suicidal also got me into Infectious Grooves. Trujillo is an outstanding bassist, and I'd love to see him in a similar project again outside of Metallica. Anyway great comparison, I would have never thought of that, but I totally see it. F Koga Choppa (is that not the greatest name!) is a phoenomenal bassist! Japan has a collection of some of the most skilled and creative young talent in the world right now, imo, and Gacharic Spin is just another example. The band, minus the pink haired singer, has been around for about 10 years and had an off shoot called Doll$box that is a bit more metal. It's definitely worth a listen. Appreciate the reaction.

Btw, all the best with your journey through Gacharic Spin's catalogue. You're spot on with the associations you made. But Gachapin (short for Gacharic Spin) will surprise you everytime, cause they tend to vary styles faster than a quick change magician LOL
They also had quite a few line-up changes (they've been around since 2009), which also might make you ponder the question, if you're watching the same band ;)
After they lost their initial vocalist in 2012, they added 2 performers/dancers as steady band members for the next 6 years. In 2019 they changed to their current incarnations as a 6 piece.
But that's only a very short depiction of their band history.
I second the other comments, that recommend that you watch a live performance of them. Reverse Psychology from their latest album might be a good start.

I was going to get on here to give some background but I see that @phaeron did an excellent job with that. They are a band with excellent artists across the board. The "core four" of the band are Koga Michiko (F Chopper Koga - should be in the stage name Hall of Fame), Sano Hana (Hana), Midorikawa Tomoko (Tomo-zo) and Suzuki Reona (Oreo Reona). All four are in their mid-30s with Hana the oldest at 37. Yuri (age 28) and Angie (age 21) joined in early 2019. Hana is an amazing musician and vocalist - world class on bass, guitar and drums while also being a very good vocalist (both clean and harsh). She is a primary composer, along with Koga, and those two founded and are the clear leaders of the band. Koga discovered a 17 year old Angie and brought her to audition for the band. The band member that intimidated Angie the most, by far, was Hana but apparently Angie won Hana over. Angie has turned into one of the most charismatic singers I have seen in a long while (right up there with Mayu of Nemophila). These six are by far the best incarnation of Gacharic Spin and I hope they stay together for a very long while.
I second the recommendation of I Wish I (live version) as the next song. A good link has been provided by @johnarksey9460. As also mentioned, back in 2012 the core four got together with Fuki of Unlucky Morpheus to form Doll$Boxx. Fuki is my favorite Japanese female vocalist and, in my opinion, the best Japanese I have heard on my deep dive into Japanese rock/metal. My introduction to GS was this live version on "Mindset", ua-cam.com/video/lQFBwxoEnmg/v-deo.html and at the end I literally thought "WTF did I just listen to?" with a smile on my face. That solo was right out of the short lived jazz-rock fusion genre back in the 70's. These women are amazing and can put a variety of genres into their song writing blender and what comes out is pure Gacharic Spin. F Chopper Koga, the bass player, is a fan of Primus. Here are a few examples of their live shows which have over the top energy...

Excellent analysis, Eric. GS actually paid tribute to the "real funk"/disco with another piece called Generation Gap. The music video is worth a watch as is anything with GS. They are a very diverse band with both attitude and energy in abundance. Generation Gap MV: ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=gacharic+spin+generation+gap
But their live energy is incredible:

The generation gap MV is great, especially once familiar with the band members - however based on past experience it has a decent chance of being blocked on YT unfortunately

What these ladies have done in the first 40 seconds of the song is every guitar loving fantasies especially guys who wants to be a bassist. Some reactors without any penchant for guitar skills will not notice it.

They just released a new song Halfway, To the Beyond about 4 hours ago, more funk popish, but it's good. Let it Beat is more in this vein. Then there's I wish I that is thrash funk pop?

There seems to be a thing with Bands in Japan, if you can't do it live, you don't do it in the studio. So if you some crazy thing on the studio track, they will so do it live.
Gacharic Spin also have a side project, that as a different singer, who maybe one of the most sort after singers in the Japanese rock/metal world, that singer is someone called Fuki. And the band is Doll$boxx. Doll$boxx is more rock/metal than Gacharic Spin used to be(pre Angie). DOLL$BOXX - Loud Twin Stars ua-cam.com/video/Tl4QNXnE-XU/v-deo.html

Glad to see you appreciate the most under-rated of the big 5 Japanese all-female rock bands currently exploding into the west - Gacharic Spin is the moxt diverse of the lot with incredible musicianship and energy - funk/punk/progressive with elements of pop and metal... they'll even throw in some screaming/growling now and then and i wouldn't be surprised if they come out with a country song in the near future... theyve been around for awhile with some lineup changes and distinct phases, but have retained the core musicians for the past decade and this current version fronted by pink haired Angie is the best yet... with so much history it's hard to choose, but highly recommend their live version of I Wish I as your next step to joining the Spinheads ua-cam.com/video/nhFse5ZBlLo/v-deo.html

I was wondering that. Presumably the others are Band-Maid, BRIDEAR, HANABIE. and Nemophila.
I'm sure that won't spark any discussion.

No, I have never been on any Detroit radio. I've had an opportunity to interview for a job there, but declined. I know who Doug Podell is and his legacy there, but never worked with him or in that market.
      Cheers,
      Eric

They are women of many talents/personas. The core of this band also has a couple of alter ego's. Take Hana,Oreo,Tomo-Zo, Chopper Koga and then add the powerhouse vocalist Fuki and you get "Doll$Boxx" which has a much harder edge to their sound. And then they also do 80's-90's hair metal covers under the name "Metallicspin". They pick up a male vocalist and away they go off to the 80's!
