- My friend Derek Bieri from Vice Grip Garage is preparing to do another Ford Model A road trip, so I'm putting together another Ford Model A care package for VGG. This gives you an overview of what I prefer to have in addition to tools on a cross-country Model A road trip.

For those who are CONSTANTLY on my case about calling the "engine" a "motor", here is the definition of the word motor-
mo·tor /ˈmōdər/ noun
"A machine, especially one powered by electricity or internal combustion, that supplies motive power for a vehicle or for some other device with moving parts." Besides that, Ford's Model A owner's manual repeatedly refers to it as the "motor". So, there you go.

Thank you buddy! Appreciate your expertise!
Woo Hoo. A couple of down to earth, family oriented, patriotic mechanics getting together. What's not to love?
@ModelA the nomenclature on your 'care package' parts is spot on, 'perfect!' 😂
Derek is super nice off camera too! He really cares about his family and friends so much. Super guy.
Watch them both religiously. A fella can't wait for this one
Thanks Herb!
That original Model A video is how I discovered Vice Grip Garage and then discovered your channel. I look forward to another Model A video from him and appreciate the tips you offer. At some point I hope to get a Model A and possibly thru my channel design 3D printed/Electronic accessories as I’m not looking to build a show car just something fun to drive around with a few modern features.
Welcome aboard! Glad to have you FF!
I love how you labeled all the parts in a way A Feller (and/or Fellett) would recognize them
I just drove 5500 mile from Minnesota to Califoria and back again. Had a wonderful visit with Paul and Tina. I am ready to go again sorta. Just waiting for some parts so I can finish the Lincoln Highway. I have my happy tool so I am ready.
I would love to join Derek on his adventure with his Model A
Steve
He might need you!
Happy Tool Will travel. I’m ready If he needs me! I watch all of Derek’s VVG adventures. especially when it would have to do with the Model A.
I enjoy his trouble solving skills.
Go Derek
And, off camera, he is a super nice guy. I mean really nice. I had so much fun working with him!
I like to carry a spare radiator hose - at Gilmore last year a fellow Model A couple was stranded on the road with a failed hose - I opened my trunk and gave him a new hose- and back on the road in a short time
Yes! Me too. The hoses are in the "always in the car" package which I covered on a previous video. This is just the extra long roadtrip package.
Hello Paul, I'm here waiting... Can't wait to see what you have in store for us today!
Hahaa!! You could watch any time you wanted..
@@ModelA I know. I did. :)
Derek's Model A revival was epic and he was complimented by an elderly lady who liked his car.
That was epic, indeed
Good advice Paul for a long trip. Anyhow, a German fellow has an A and has been trying to verify the dates of the various parts. He now has the reference book Restoration Guidance and Judging Standards. A very interesting read, as you well know.
These are my two favorite UA-camrs. I live in Tennessee near VGG and my wife and I have been looking for a four door model A for a couple years. Paul has become a wealth of knowledge.
Thanks!!
this will be good! :)
Those ODELPHI lights are great. I bought one (from seeing it on your channel), liked it so much, bought two more. Not really expensive. Compact and charges fast too. Great when you are under the car. I carry the same items you do. Wish everyone did. I usually end up lending mine. I like when they have a water pump/ carburetor and no gaskets. Agree on the Altenator. Generators are cool, but why? I always get"what third brush"? Thanks Paul, good video.
LOVE those lights!! How did you and I ever get along without them??
I bought a pair of those lights and I was so impressed with their performance I bought a light for all my friends for Christmas presents! Wise choice as my friends and their wives constantly wear them!
You can never be over prepared for a road-trip!!!
Paul! You're at the top of your game my friend! I cannot wait to see how this collab culminates! You two work so well together!
Thanks so much!
Thats alot of really good info , thanks Paul . I like the end of the video. Ferris Bueller nodd.
Glad you enjoyed it Curt!
Mac and Meyer take a Model A road trip. Oh, boy! Lotsa fun on the way…🙈
Let's see how many roadside stickers and twings we can get on our back!
I LOVE the labels on the parts and pieces ie. "Fuel makeit happener" and "doohickey"!!!
Paul I like your channel and I find your channel very entertaining and informative! @vicegripgarage has been a regular watch around this house since he only had a few thousand subscribers. I LOVE his channel and also the fun project he takes on and the things he stands for.
Thanks for the laughs and the "Easter eggs" in this episode Paul Shinn!
Thank you so much!! Derek is such a nice guy, both on and off camera. I think he had around 50K subscribers when I subbed.
Just got my Model A engine freed up and running! Repairs involved removing the head and Number three required a big hammer and a piece of oak.
Next we had to remove the piston and free up the rings plus dingle ball the cylinder and ended up replacing a couple valves and touching up the seats as well!
I've owned over 20 Model A hotrods but never owned a complete stocker and because of you and Derek I've found a new appreciation and love for these cars.
Carry on and I'll keep watching! Cheers!!!!
Excellent!! Really glad to hear a stock Model A checks the boxes for you. There's something really fun about an all stock Model A. Hotrods have their place too, of course. But a stock Model A is just magic.
Paul and Derek are great! I learned so much about the Model T and A.
the 17 y.o. in me wants to make a t&a joke so bad but the 43 y.o. me just wont allow it
I was at that factory a couple of years ago for my cousin's wedding, it was awesome.
Paul, I like your Derek ism labels on the parts you’re showing us!😂. I don’t own a Model A, but have always wanted one, and you make me want one even more. 👍
What's stopping you?
Hey Paul, glad to see you guys working together again! Our Detroit episode was one of the best of Roadworthy Rescues season 1
Matthew!!!! How the heck have you been, my friend?? I was really out of my element when we recorded RR. If I had another shot, I think I'd have it more together next time. Once I kinda figured it out, we were done.
Ha😂 I love the labels so Derek feels comfortable repairing those vintage carriages. 😊
Gotta help a feller out, ya know.
Love the Sasquatch-friendly labels on each part. Thanks, Paul.
Glad you like them!
Subscribed to your channel after the revival with Derek on Motortrend. I’m so happy I can keep up with the videos now that I’m retired and inspired to find an old car myself and bring it back to life!
Thanks Mark!
very interesting vid - can't wait for this to come online! Tx Paul!
Hope you enjoy it!
With a friend like Paul, how can Derek go Wrong? Shinn for President 2024
THANKS!! When I become President, the first thing I will do is tell companies to keep their politics to themselves.
Awesome, seeing the team up
Always smart and practical tips and info here. Paul and Tina are a wonderful resource.
Thank you Craig!!!
What a great video. Short but very informative. Thanks again. You fellers have a great time together.
Glad you enjoyed it William. I try to get right to the point.
Great video, and most of all ! Very informative to me and I am sure to all of the followers .
Glad it was helpful!
I was in utter awe having chills when you guys rode through the old factory in the Model A. Ford had such a good heritage with the really first large scale 4 cylinder that was practical, durable and would just about endure anything. It's sad even with the "modern advances" of new cars it seems ole Henry's memory for being an innovator and trail blazer is all but lost. I mean take the old 4 cylinder. It could take so much abuse and yet still keep on chugging . The modern motors put out a lot of HP but wow they are so delicate and require in a way a lot more attention to overheating or oil weight and level, as well as service intervals. Not saying I just want a Model A and nothing else but do long for the days of these and their descendants cast iron blocks rugged and durable.
I guess I'm getting to be an old feller (71) and so the old cast iron 4, 6 and V8 is just what I knew and admired as a boy and youngster.
You are a fine fellow, an example to be of a good man, Model A, MS Tina seems to be a really sweet attentive loving wife and a great person in her own right.
You guys are the salt of the earth and certainly hold values and feel worth for things and values much beyond your years.
Thank you for the opportunity to watch your excellent videos, learn as well as remember why the Model A was probably the greatest car ever built (saw and very much enjoyed your video on that) as well as learn more of Paul and Tina that makes me warm inside as I see your character and values in every video
Keep up the excellent work!
Thank you so much for the inspiring and kind words! Yes, Tina and I are very traditional (we even waited until after marriage for you-know-what) and hold traditional American values as the only values. We still believe in an honest day's work, and telling the truth, even if it hurts. We also believe the Ford Model A is the best car ever built. That isn't just a video title, we really believe it. From our family to yours, may God bless you.
Awesome is always Paul I love your videos i don't comment very often but you just have the most interesting videos and I love to watch Derek's too so you two collaborating it's really awesome Thank you again for awesome video.
Thank you, my friend!
Been watching Merlins Old School Garage Model A trip. Your name and help came up. Awesome how you help others.
That's what I'm all about!
Paul, I watch even though I have a 31Chevy. I learn and appreciate your enthusiasm for the model A . Thank you for the great videos and the great channel
Cheers !!
Chevy is better than no car at all!
Absolutely love the labels on the parts! 😂🤣 Perfect!
Thanks 😆
Nice video!! Good list of items. Can't wait to see the video on Derek's adventure! I usually carry a spare carburetor and pre-timed distributor in our cars. I also carry new fuel line compression ferrule fittings that screw into the carburetor since all ferrule "seats" are not the same in every carburetor.
Hey, I might have to add that to my kit too! Thanks!
I am really glad you to are working today.
Me too!
I appreciate the Derekisms. Subscribed.
This is going to be awesome
Yay!
Now do more road trips together!
(I still have to get my own model A)
The mixed intro …… AWESOME!!!😂
Glad you liked it!
Awesome! Now you guys need to go on a drive together!! Looking forward to more!
We drove through downtown Detroit together in a Model A last year!
Loved the way you named the parts very clever very funny.
Glad you think so!
Everyone loves a good crossover
Love the Derekspeak labels on the parts.
To make it easier for a feller to figure out what is what! hahaa
That was a great ending!
right on mate
Hi Paul!: Thanks for the neat video about what parts to take along on a road trip! I'm sure you take some other things also, like a fan belt and some spark plugs, too. VERY informative!
I did throw a fan belt in there, but forgot to video that. Good catch!
And you took the time to label the parts in Derek-speak. Very thoughtful. Another fantastique adventure is about to take place. Can't wait. 73 OM de N8IWS.
Yep! Hahaa!! 73, OM!
I wish I had Paul Shinn around. I'd probably be on my second or third Model A by now
Or in witness protection program. Whichever.
Good one Paul, you made all those items make sense. I know we don't carry those thing with our modern cars, but it is a different type on beast. When I do hay we take a lot of tools and parts that we commonly have to fail, like sheer pens or bolts, hydraulic fluid, grease, etc.... for some of the same reasons, don't want a break down so far from home. Thanks, I hope your weekend is going good, also the rest goes good.
Thanks Dan! It mostly comes down to IF you break down and parts availability to get going again as quickly as possible. When you're doing hay, you don't have time to go looking for a bolt or whatever, so you carry some. Same kind of thing trying to make it home 700 miles before they file a missing person report on you,
@@ModelA I get that Paul, thanks have a good night!
Good idea carrying extra stuff, hopefully the right stuff. Always carried an extra timing gear, and extra connecting rods on those long tours 50 years or so ago. Had to change a rod in a gas station parking lot only once and once in a motel parking lot. Changed a timing gear on the side of the road once and made shure I was out of there before dark, man what a slum. Never carried a carb, dist, but definitly a couple of condensers. I'm certain Bobby G has done crazy stuff like that too!
Bob G. has done some amazing roadside stuff. Him and Derek are very similar.
So useful to know. Hopefully one day I'll be able to pack some spares for my own Model A trip. A friend of mine has just driven to Istanbul in his!
That is a worthy goal, my friend!! I think your Model A should have a custom drawn artwork on the sides, the whole length of the body.
I hope you continue to collaborate. Very enjoyable.
I hope so too! Derek is such a nice feller
Cheers mate.
Cheers!
Been watching your videos love it
Glad you like them!
I love how its all "Derek Labeled" :D
Makin it easy on a feller
Sweet!
I was just asking you Paul about this very video and just as you said thanks again keep up the great work some day I will be driving one. I say if you're a real car guy or girl you're not until you have to drive a model A 👍
Agreed!
The parts labels are priceless! Thingies and whirlers and doohickey and such!
Oh, is the warning a one time thing, or has the state of affairs dictated a disclaimer? Sad if so...
Depending on the content, state of affairs.
@@ModelA I know on the insurance issue you had a careful worded script. But today seemed pretty innocuous. Quite funny actually! Oh, thanks for the laughs!
I am not allowed to "recommend" something, only "suggest", etc. Insurance companies went woke!!!
@@ModelA Gilmore this year? I'll be there in September.
@@williamforbes5826 Yep. Will be there
Nice tutorial on looking over a Model A but having a friend like you come along would be a big help. I would like to get one but It would be my luck I would get one all cobbed up. Thanks for the video keep up the good work.
How can I help you? If you ever decide to buy a Model A near me, I'd gladly to check it out for you.
@@ModelA Cool but i live on the east coast and have to many cars right now for any more. Thanks for the offer your a great guy.
That's very cool. Wish I lived closer to you & your club.😢
Sonora is a special club for sure
Im still watching cause my model a need no work... Just chillin haha
You are really fun together. Derrick still has that truck from the 1920's. Maybe you can revive that together too.
Derek is just such a nice guy, and so helpful. It's easy to be good when you're teamed up with him. That truck from the 20's looks interesting. But, I only know about Model As. I'm a 1-trick pony.
@@ModelA I think, I mean, It isn't Derek's wheelhouse too. In the end that truck needs a lot of research. I think the bottom line would be. Find a sponsor that needs the exposure (vintage parts) and do the research and prepping. Make a buck while doing it. Then do the Show's with Derek while keeping him away from the project sourcing parts and doing the research.... I bet Derek would be in on such a plan..The vintage car market is still in it's infancy.... You are such a great salesman of those parts to keep history on the road. How many manufacturers could show off old machines they built in the 20's and compare those to modern ones. Doing some plastic and maybe rubber printing and 3d scanning of old parts that cannot be sourced anymore. A big manufacturer can get a lot of exposure if they can show off their reputation spanning decades and sell some new tools to make parts on the go. The new techniques like laser rust removal... new paints etc etc.
this is sooo fun! can't believe my fave two car dudes are doing a collab again. bravo. only thing better would be to have Adrian from Astrowerke as the third Model A guy.
Adrian would probably make us do everything the right way and all perfect and stuff. No thanks.
@@ModelA haha! true.
Hi Paul. Great info. When are you and Derek going to make another video together? Have a great weekend.
I don't know, but I'd sure like to. Last year he was talking about doing something with the motor in his red tudor.
i did a commercial on my channel for them lights. a month later i noticed they were getting very hot, actually burnt me so now i mounted them to my weld helmet or make sure i wear the bandanna under it. they work great just get hot
Thanks mate! That's so weird, none of mine even get warm. My oldest one is a couple years old now, still works fine, just doesn't hold a charge as long. Love your channel!
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off deja vu. 🤣😂
LOVE that movie
@@ModelA Same here. Those John Hughes films are masterpieces; Breakfast Club is another favorite of mine. A shame Matthew Broderick went woke.
Yea, that part bugs me. But at least he didn't go woke in the movie. There's a lot of pressure in Hollywood to adopt a certain mindset so that you keep working. If you speak out against it, then you stop getting hired. Look at Mel Gibson. Stand up guy. Can't get hired in Hollywood.
Dan from DD speedshop was just useing that light
soooo awesome
Thanks!
Subscription complete!🙂
Good work! Thank you!
Just got two of those headlamps. I was looking for some good lights.
Excellent!
Hi, you helped Merlin get his car ready to drive from Ohio home to Arizona. I have been watching the trip on his youtube channel.
Yes. Merlin is a really nice man, how could anyone not help him?
Outstanding as always, and darn good tips. You can tell a lot about a man by the company he keeps -you and Mr Bieri are two of the best. I love the fact he’s now hooked on Model A’s. The combo intro, like others have written, had my brain scrambled for a bit 😂. Loved the labeling also 🤣. Thanks as always - have a great week. ~ Chuck. P.S. Is the distributor you showed in this video the one you rebuilt for him a while back (with modern condenser)?
It's a new one I just built.
@@ModelA Thank you sir, I appreciate the time you put into your videos and taking the time to answer questions. ~ Chuck
@@charlesdalton985 Glad to help Chuck!
Thank you for yet another excellent video. Just one question. How long of a road trip are you speaking of? Anything past the corner store ? 100 miles? 200 miles? Over night ?
Thanks again, well done.
Looooooooooooooong
Paul, great care package. On that LED headband light, I bought one on your recommendation, but it only took one charge and worked until it was flat and now won’t take a charge. In no way do I blame you or your recommendation. I just didn’t have a good experience with them. Maybe I am cursed. 🤪
Dang it. They will exchange it for free!
@@ModelA I thought that but the cost of postage overseas and I can’t find my receipt etc means I can’t do much. 🤓
Please email me. Let's see what we can do.
@@ModelA Paul. Thanks for the offer but I will leave it as it will be more trouble than either of us need. But, thanks so much for wanting to help.
No trouble at all, my friend. I'd do anything for a friend. Maybe just email me your address and I'll buy one and sent it to you.
My ford model a is 95 years old I bought it in October 2008
Paul,
Can you add the link for your video that describes the head light socket? If I can remember, you glue it or heat shrink the terminals.
I have mentioned that in several videos. I put heat shrink on the wires at the ends.
I want one so bad, I am a jeep man but I have always wanted a model A
I'm a recovering Jeepaholic myself.
Liked n commented. Sorry couldn’t share as I’m logged in on my gold page n not my profile atm. 8:01 🍻🤴🏻
Thanks!
Hi Paul: Another great video! Can you reply to this message with the link to the Odelfy light? Will appreciate it and thank you again for helping us keep our A's on the road!
Sure! Here you go- odelfi.com/discount/PAULSHINN
Hey Paul, is that a St. Claire Wills radiator cap?
Hilarious you put the names and descriptions on the parts in Derek terminology speak. lol
How many miles did original owners typically put on a Model A? How long did they own them?
Hi paul.i was watching Zacs video on hiis model a truck and he put on the healights and the fuse blew and then he could not start it. I thought it was illegal to fuse the ignition circuit in a car as a sudden switch off of the motor could be dangerous.Whem Henry ford fused his v8 cars from 1934 he only fused the lighting circuits. Cheers steve.
Thanks Steve. I've never heard that. Modern cars have fused ignition circuits (computers)
Hi Paul where can I get that alternator you held up and any special wiring needed? Thanks
No wiring changes or mods needed. I did a video on how to convert a GM alternator to 6V positive ground. Or, you can spend $300 or more and order one from any of the Model A vendors.
@@ModelA thank you binging on it now
You forgot a set of lightning hoses and sparkalators. 😎😎
Model As don't have lightning hoses, pretty sweet!
@@ModelA Lightning straps would be a better term.
OOH!! Wish I had thought of that.
Did you notice the labels on those parts hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Don't foget a roll of TP too!
I'm curious (and worried this may be a blasphemous question) - are there not modernized aftermarket parts that can provide a much more reliable carburetor, distributor or even something like an electronic throttle body? I know... completely retro-mods the thing into a semi-modernized car, but curious if that is possible for someone who might want to make one a more normal everyday driver.
Not blasphemy at all. That is a legitimate questions. The answer is yes and no. There are electronic ignitions and things available, but I have found them to be LESS reliable than original stuff. The trick is to keep computers out of these, it turns out.
@@ModelA Haha - well, speaking as a Network Admin/Engineer, I could not agree more! Now personally, I think the tinkering and replacing stuff (via spares) is part of the charm. Mechanical things can always be fixed, whereas electronic stuff can misbehave and sometimes be impossible to fix if glitched out. I asked out of curiosity though because there is such a trend at retro-modding to try and semi-modernize old stuff. Thanks for answering!
Ah. Gotcha. That trend is because people are lazy. They buy a new thing and bolt it on, then pat themselves on the back for how smart they are. They don't actually figure anything out anymore. My perspective of the new "car guy" trend is to buy a suspension KIT, and electricals KIT, and this KIT, a that KIT, and then bolt everything together, connect a laptop computer to it, make it work, and then talk about how smart you are. The really smart people were the ones who engineered the KIT!
@@ModelA Haha! No kidding! Yeah, the "purchased solution", electronically speaking, isn't great either. Again, from my decades of being in the IT field, what people don't realize is that electronics are very much a stuck-in-time thing. They are only supported/updated for a short time, and then they're considered obsolete. I've seen, SO, so many electronic throttlebodies become useless because at around 10 to 15 years old, they're way out of support, and it becomes difficult to work with them. That's if they work at all, because electronics degrade with time. Trying to troubleshoot glitchy old hardware can be a real headache. Troubleshooting mechanic issues remains a mechanical problem, in which there is always a solution.
I'm getting a 4 door sedan tomorrow 1931 wish me luck
Luck!! (be it to you)
Nice job Ferris! You're still here? The video's over...go home!
YEP! Hahahaha
Ive never heard of a 2 door sedan. Sedan means 4 doors doesnt it?
No. Sedan has nothing to do with door count. According to the Cambridge Dictionary-
sedan
noun [ C ]
US
us
/səˈdæn/ uk
/sɪˈdæn/
(UK saloon)
A car with seats for four or five people, two or four doors, and a separate area in the back for bags, boxes, and suitcases
@@ModelA -well I still call a 2 door car a coupe and 4 door car a sedan. :)
@@dsim3211 Go for it!
6:25 All males 12 and up are mentally 12 🤣
That's a fact
I like your videos ,but if you think you need that many extra parts your car is not prepared for the trip. I wonder how they did on the past .
In the past, these parts were available at almost every gas station on almost every street corner in almost every town. Today, with very rare exception, these parts are only available from mail order places. It's just called "being prepared". Derek is (allegedly) buying a Model A sight unseen and driving it home. Is the car prepared, as per my or your definition? Absolutely not! That is the whole point of this.
I really like to watch these guys but to vacuum a gas tank, (I don't care how old the gas is), is sheer stupidity and a death wish, Have you never seen the brushes spark an armature? I'm surprised you didn't get pulled off the air. Might be the reason I can't find THAT particular episode. Love you guys to death - please don't end a good thing.
It wasn't even flammable anymore. No danger. We didn't use the vacuum anymore once we started running flammable liquids in it.
Exactly what I carry.Thx Mr S
You're welcome, Dean!
But your engine was stuffed
Model A engines are easily rebuild-able
