I discovered Buxtehude works in my twenties. Now I am 68 but love this music forever (and I love Bach, of course) Thanks a lot. I know that J. S. Bach walked 500 km to meet Dietrich Buxtehude..
Buxtehude's compositions capture the cosmopolitan grandeur and magisterial aspects of the Northern German traditions; whereas Bach's compositions are enriched by his improvisational nature and pure genius, changing the horizon forever. Manuel Tomadin performs these selections deftly and just so articulately. His performance is one of the best I've ever listened to; and I will keep returning to it in the future, because it gives me great solace and an overwhelming sense of awe. Thank you Brilliant Classics for one of the best posts ever here.
Dropping accidentally in, and being profoundly delighted,.These two guys were exceptional by any standard. Gardiner has focused on the rebellious Bach, yet Bach the Musician is more interesting. Bach makes me understand Buxtehude a little better. Thanks a lot!

I have read that Buxtehude, being older and Cantor in Lübeck, was impressed by the improvisation capabilities of Bach, who in turn was very impressed by Dietrich. The tale goes that Buxtehude wanted the younger Johann Sebastian to stay in Lübeck as Kappellmeister. The tale goes that Buxtehude wanted Bach to marry his daughter so as to secure the nomination of Bach. Whatever the reason, Bach was not that interested and went away. This tale is in wikipedia and partly confirmed in the book "Bach" by John Eliot Gardiner. Upon his return to Saxony, Bach was detained for some time for administrative reasons.
That tells me that Buxtehude was more impressed in Bach than Bach for Buxtehude. Lol Bach probably found out that this man is a desperate older man who is so intrigued by his music and yet he looked up to him after all this time in the end to find out that he was so much greater than Buxtehude can ever be. Buxtehude basically made himself look petty, this is why I assume Bach lost interest & possibly even respect for him especially after going so far to have tried to make him marry his own daughter. Yeah, to Bach this is not only rude but very distasteful. I’m sorry Buxtehude, Bach isn’t nobody’s pet lol.😂
The mark of a musician who truly understands the soul of the organ is one who understands how to work with the resonance of his space... too many organists continue to play at a rhythm without respect for the resonance of a room. The following echo and silence are part of the performance as a brilliant fanfare. Without silence, the fanfare just becomes noise
Wasn’t this the same church that Thomas Mann went to at the end of his life because he felt compelled to listen to the music of Buxtehude and Bach one last time?
Buxtehude is sublime. Btw if you like Buxtehude, check out Vincent Lübeck's organ works too. They're tremendous and I'm certain Bach was familiar with them.
Agree about Lübeck and try Georg Böhm's organ music as well. He and Bach definitely knew each other and at one point Bach appointed Böhm as his agent to sell some of his music. It is just possible (although far from clear) that Böhm, who was quite a bit older, could have been Bach's teacher. Another composer who should appeal to anyone who likes Buxtehude is Bach's cousin Johann Gottfried Walther.
The "bellows assistants" was paid into past (in Italy we found these contracts on histiorical documents where the parishes wrote down the moneys for organists church services and bellows assistants work).

Magnificent ... thank you. Nothing comparable today. We're fortunate to have such grand work available.
And have organists that pass down these masterpieces..

I heared from the Dutch musician Ton Koopman on the Dutch radio that the daughter of Buxtehude was not so beautiful...
@@FatherLupus Shame on you and Koopman! As a matter of cold fact, she ( and her sister) were a trifle past prime youth. Shame on us!
Shame on both of you. Less gossiping, more Bach adoration! Just kidding. Thanks for the anecdote. Now, let's listen.
@@FatherLupus if you are right, I understand Buxtehude 😉👍

I was just listening to Buxtehude a minute ago, so imagine my delight when I saw a compilation of Buxtehude AND Bach! Subscribed just for that!
Divino
Magistral performance by Manuel Tomadin of these wonderful works of Buxtehude and J.S.Bach. Thank you !
The greatest and the most underrated Baroque Composer
Underrated?? 😂😂 I believe that he does have the fame and respect that he deserves.....
Don't you have them in the wrong order?
@@MyNewEra2012 Unfortunately Organ music is unknow for common people due typical instrument location and music generic culture of "modern" men.

Smuk og rigt varieret flot orgelværk ….
The first one sounds like Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor... 🤔🤔🤔
This BuxWV 155 is much more interesting IMO
Difficult to follow the tracklist..was never good at subtraction!
I want to see an honest organ video: where is the side show of the poor peasants in the basement pumping away on the bellows?
