  • The Varnus Organ Hall needs your help. We are asking the community's support to restoring and operating Varnus Hall, Canada's only private organ concert venue owned by Xaver Varnus, to provide a worthy home for organists, famous artists and young talent alike, from around the world to perform, and broadcast their concerts online. We are grateful to you if you can help our work with any donations. ca.gofundme.com/f/fundraising...
    Filmed for television broadcast on the great Silbermann organ of the Church of St. George in Rötha, Germany. Directed by Mathe Vargha. Special thanks to Mr. Jihoon Song, Cantor of the church.
    •●The Official Video Site of Concert Organist Xaver Varnus●•
    Born in Budapest, his first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy. Xaver Varnus has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in Bach's Thomaskirche in Leipzig (2014), Berliner Dom (2013), Notre-Dame (1981), Saint-Sulpice (2006) and Saint-Eustache (1996) in Paris, National Shrine in Washington, D.C. (1985), and Canterbury Cathedral (2004), as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia (1985). His Quadruple Platinum Disc winning album From Ravel to Vangelis, released by Sony BMG in 2007, is the best-selling collection of organ recordings ever. "Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould". (The Globe & Mail, Canada's National Newspaper, 1985)

    That was the first time I've heard the ending of the passacaglia pared down like that to hear every little note where so many others go for the bombastic finish, and then to dive into the fugue with the respect it deserves, and a similar finishing touch there, to get every drop out of each note. A wonderful piece played by a master of his art on a superb instrument.

      It is due to the low pace and great timing. His play reminds me Glenn Gould way of understanding Bach. I love these ideas. And the sound of the old instrument is thrilling. I'm seriously getting goosebumps.

    I saw Gustav Leonhardt playing live on a couple of occasions in Madrid. The first time he played the harpsichord in a trio with Frans Brüggen (flute) and Anner Bylsma (cello). The second time he played the organ, with works by Bach. The recordings of Bach by Leonhardt that I have tend to be a bit fast for my liking. I have to admit that Xaver Varnus is great in terms of tempo and pause. He's in no rush to go put out a fire. He lets the music breathe. The algorithm brought me to his music quite some time ago. It really got it right.

      Absolutely! listen to his tempo when he plays Toccata and Fugue in D minor on the great Sauer Organ of the Berliner Dom. He sounds a bit slow, but he keeps the exact tempo and pause demanded by the resonance in Berliner Dom.

      I'm confused by "a1=469,1 Hz". Maybe because this is European and I'm yank. I think that statement translated to American would be "A4=469.1 Hz".
      If I understood you correctly then I wonder why this instrument is tuned so high. 469 Hz is close to what is usually considered A#.
      ====================
      EDIT
      Okay I looked it up. Accordion to this source Baroque tuning was usually 415. Although it could go to the 460s, which might have been hard on the structural integrity of the fiddles.

      Pitch has not always been A=440, and in the 18th century there were still a variety of pitches used in different cities and on different instruments. Many of the organs Bach played would have been tuned to 'chorton' which is indeed approximately a half step above 440. In his cantatas, the organ part is notated a full step lower than the other instruments, which played at 'kammerton' (a=412, or approximately a half step below 440). In other words, the organ part had to be transposed to play with other instruments.

    • @chadstaten5586
      @chadstaten5586 7 років тому

      I'm told (and it sounds like a plausible explanation) that organs from this time were often built with a higher pitch because of the incremental cost of materials in going down another half step.

    Sir, are you a Bach organ scholar? I appreciate your playing so much. You let the piece breathe, something many organists fail to do. I feel the same about your Toccata and Fugue video. Incredible artistry, thank you for sharing

      great now every time i hear a single C note followed by a C major chord in first inversion by brain has to quickly replay the entire 16 minutes of this piece in a matter of a few seconds

      Len DePrang - I am sad to note that, as of 19/05/2020, at least 86 soulless philistines disagree with you.

      @@JUANKERR2000 Great, another "these people don't like what I like so they're stupid"/us-vs.-them comment. Feel free to join the real world whenever you like, you man-child. Oh, but go ahead and make a comment about how I probably follow all the latest pop artists like I think you're going to do instead.
